This is the kind of shit that drives me up the wall.
To give other readers a little background, one of several football schedule changes that the SEC initiated when it expanded to include Missouri and Texas A&M in 2012 was to flip venues for Georgia and Auburn’s annual home-and-home series. This resulted in the Bulldogs having to play at Jordan-Hare Stadium in back-to-back years in 2012 and 2013. They’ve alternated accordingly ever since.
The unintended effect of that is that Georgia ends up playing both Auburn and Georgia Tech ― its two oldest rivals ― at home or away in the same year…
Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity said the matter has come up for discussion before and continues to. In fact, SEC athletic directors are meeting this week in St. Louis as they do every year during the SEC men’s basketball tournament. But he said as long as the league maintains an eight-game conference schedule, it’s difficult for them to do much different.
McGarity’s latest response to the question of whether Auburn could flip back to playing Georgia in Athens in odd-numbered years was only “perhaps.” He answered that question in slightly more detail before last season.
“I think everything’s on the table in the future regarding SEC scheduling,” he said. “Every meeting we have, we talk about scheduling and what we need to consider. We know we are committed to an eight-game schedule for the next few years. Will that change? Who knows? I think we have a group of ADs that are willing to listen to other alternatives.”
Georgia lost a home game in the series and as a result now has the Auburn and Georgia Tech games in the same pattern. If there was ever a benefit to Georgia in agreeing to what appears to have been an arbitrary arrangement, I’ve never understood what that was. I also can’t understand what would be so tough about correcting it; it would just mean playing two straight in Athens to balance what happened in 2012-3. Not exactly rocket science.
Were I the AD, I’d be bitching about the unfairness and demanding a fix. It sounds like McGarity prefers to sit around and discuss scenarios with his peers that nobody has the slightest intent of actually pursuing. It’s the Georgia Way’s version of leadership, I guess.
Bottom line is the AD just ain’t a make it happen cap’n.
Sounds like a big circle jerk in St. Louis.
PS- Dawgs basketball season will by over in 2 hours. But hey, they showed a lot of spirit in the 1st round.

” missed Again”? Guess you haven’t really read too many of my comments since I started posting here when Kirby came in. Not to toot my own horn it tell me how i “missed” on the football program?
And,I admit – win or lose yesterday-it was kind of a crappy thing to write about the Dawgs. But, even if we “make a deep run” doesn’t change the narrative that we are the defiition of a mediocre basketball program. And no one seems to give a shit in the athletic department. Been that way since I moved here in 1989. I’m sure the magical run in 1983 was incredible but I missed it because that was before cable tv.
You think that game mattered yesterday? Let me drop some knowledge Lake – it didnt. Yay,we’re in the quarterfinals! We’ve overcome so much adversity!
Ps-baseball looks headed for another mediocre season. I guess we’ll always have 1990 and 2008 though.

It shouldn’t bother me but it does. It’s the principle.
SEC Commish: “Greg, your going to play Auburn away back to back so we can get some more money, OK?”
Cowdog In a Greg suit: “Fuck you. Make Tennessee or Florida do it. And while you’re at it, tell your asshole buddy at the NCAA that Gurley’s playing this weekend. He don’t like it he can sue me”
I’m mixing examples of rolloverandtakeitisms of course but y’all get the point.

But why can’t we fix this with GT instead of Auburn? I mean, if we had to play two straight away games against GT to do it, would anyone care? Personally I like the idea: we kick their asses in front of a mostly UGA crowd, in their stadium, twice in a row. What’s not to like?

What’s not to like is we’d be getting the shaft yet again to fix a problem that was created by us getting shafted to begin with. Why should give up yet ANOTHER home game to rectify the problem created by the league office? This is a simple issue – Auburn owes us a visit.

Best I recall, Auburn plays Georgia and Alabama the same way, both at home or both away. You would think they would want to change that also, but again, it is Auburn and who knows how they think…..

I’m sure McGarity will agree to play them in Auburn back to back to help them out.

Auburn wants it solved, too.
They have recommended two solutions:
A permanent move to the SEC East; and/or
Move the 2018 DSOR game to JHS.
Greg, your move.

way to give a reasonable Option B, Auburn. So we give them another home game. Yeah not happening.
That’s when Greg should use their words against them and insist that because both teams want it, it MUST be solved. Because he (presumably) thinks it’s asinine / unfair / too noisy to then insist that the only fair, logical solution is 2 games in Athens in 18 and 19 is why he gets labeled as a schmuck.

I hate McGarity as much as anybody, but the only way to fix this is to go to 3 cross-over games (which the league should). Although it is hard to believe, all the other permanent crossovers were West home in odd, East home in even from 1992-2012, except for us. This was not a big deal when there were 3 cross-over opponents, as the league could mix and match to get it right. But when the league switched to only 2 cross-over games and the new scheduling format, it had to have us play at Auburn twice in a row to get back “in sync” with the other permanent cross-over rivalries. So this year, the East is all at home for the permanent cross-overs, and the West is home in all rotating ones. The only way to fix it is to go to 9 conference games with 3 cross-overs to add some flexibility back.
I’m gonna go puke for “defending” McGarity now…

But every other year we have AU and GT at home….which I like. You can’t please everyone.

The competition issue is the only thing that is important to me. Does this give an advantage to our rivals? Tech is a non-factor. We beat Tech in Atlanta just as much as we beat Tech in Athens–more actually. We own Auburn at either site, too, although lately Auburn has won more at home than in Athens. What gripes my ass is that we did the SEC a favor by agreeing to this and we got NOTHING in return–the conference shits on Georgia with regularity. There needs to be some quid to go with the pro quo.

I’ve been wondering if the reason that Kirby’s new contract hasn’t been announced is that he and Sexton are trying to do a number on the current power structure within BM in Kirby’s favor. I’d have to imagine that there are going to be a number of items in the new contract which show we’ve given a larger amount of authority to Kirby in some of the decision-making.

I think the reason they haven’t played in Athens consecutively is that it would give us an extra conference home game. That would be unfair to the rest of the East.
That’s where we could flip and play Vandy on the road. This would also split up our Tennessee trips so we get one game in the state each year. An easy ‘effin win-win.
I’ve been saying this ever since they jacked our schedule and I thing Greg’s job security should be based on making it happen. Now.

The math doesn’t work. We would be 4-4 with home and away, but Vandy and Auburn would then be 3-5 or 5-3. With a 6-1-1 scheduling arrangement, every East team must play every West team at home the same year to create a predictable rotation of inter divisional opponents and to keep every team playing 4 home and 4 away.

Right – you’d need them to be on each other’s schedule and swap out. Like magic. everyone 4-4 amirite?

Funny enough – all the Auburn season ticket holders I know want the Georgia / Bama years split as well since every other year they have to play both on the road.

As infuriating as the current situation is it is probably more practical to resolve it by making a deal with Tech instead of getting the SEC to fix it.
LikeLike
Agreed…though not with the “making a deal” part. We just TELL Tech what is going to happen and if they don’t like it then we don’t worry with playing them anymore – at this point there is no benefit for UGA to keep playing them every year anyhow.

And the best part is it still leaves Auburn playing both Georgia and Bama on the road every other year.

You act like a a P5 game we win 70+ percent of the time is meaningless in the bigger picture. Mc Jughead would probably take the new opening and schedule Louisiana Monroe every year.

Tech won’t agree because that would put Clemson and UGA on the same home/away schedule.

IMHO this situation favors Auburn which is a feast to famine team anyway. Look at it objectively. They get a very favorable situation for them in odd-numbered years and they can make use of it to win their division and ultimately the SEC if they can win the SECCG. That’s exactly what almost happened this past season only the Dawgs beat their asses in the neutral site championship game. The even-numbered years they just accept it and win 8-9 games but no titles. Not too shabby, having a great chance at winning the SEC Championship and be in the playoff every other season. The SEC (and us and Bama) got outfoxed by Auburn again. For being a bunch of stupid rednecks they seem to always come out smelling like a rose.

Glad you didn’t use “leadership” in the same sentence with McDoofus, Senator. We gave up a lot, and got nothing in that switcheroo with AU, disgusting. We were/are wimps with that empty suit representing us.
Would love to see the 9 conference games become a reality (for many reasons), but still would like AU to have to come to Sanford two consecutive years as payback. Ridiculous to not have played A&M yet, and won’t play them in Athens for even longer. Our chances of playing them a home and home were better before they joined the conference! I also agree that the TN and Vandy games should get switched so both are not road games in the same year, one trip a year is enough. Or just play Vandy in Nashville every year because that is a fun city, and TN in Athens every year becaause no one should ever have to go there and play in that crummy stadium with half seats, all that ugly ass orange surrounding you, and listen to Rocky Top.

The issue isn’t Auburn. Scheduling HAD to change once we switches to a 6-1-1 arrangement. Every East team has to play permanent opponents at home the same year for the math to work. The opponent we should be trying to flip is Tech.

UGA administration still seems to be in that we’re the good guy mindset. I don’t expect us to push for that extra home game Auburn owes us or to flip the schedule back where an already weak home schedule is now made even weaker, every other year. Auburn is our brother, remember. We’re still afraid to step on necks ever though no one else is. Auburn has never had a problem doing it and then turning around and pushing the “family” and “all in” farce. Ugh!

I still think Auburn needs to move to the East. They’ll keep Bama as their permanent cross division rival. This would break up Bama Tennessee and free up Georgia to play Mizzou or Arkansas every year.
