Spring is sprung.

Ah, spring practice — the time of uninformed tea leaf reading (a GTP specialty) and G-Day QBR numbers — gets underway today.

I think we all know the obvious topics of interest/pundit obsession, so I’ll hit on a couple of subjects perhaps off the beaten path a bit that Seth Emerson raises here and Marc Weiszer takes on here.

One:  there are some new coaches on staff for 2o18.  What to expect?

Scott Fountain, who spent last year as a special teams analyst, is now the full-time special teams coordinator. Cortez Hankton (receivers) and Dan Lanning (outside linebackers) have joined the staff. James Coley, who had been receivers coach, is expected to move to help coach quarterbacks. Jim Chaney, who had been quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator, may focus on the latter role. Coach Kirby Smart should confirm the moves before practice begins Tuesday.

Along those lines, who will be directing the tight ends is a little mystery of which perhaps some light will be shed.

Two, which of the fresh faces works his way into the discussion about serious playing time?

Hello, early enrollees

Georgia signed seven five-star recruits in its recruiting class. Four of them enrolled early — Fields, Mays, outside linebacker Brenton Cox and running back Zamir White, who is coming off ACL surgery.

There are nine early enrollees in all, including offensive guard Trey Hill, guard/center Warren Ericson, defensive back Divaad Wilson, defensive lineman Devonte Wyatt and wide receiver Kearis Jackson.

He joins a receiving corps that returns Terry Godwin, Mecole Hardman and Riley Ridley.

White won’t be a factor in the spring because of his surgery, but that still leaves a lot of star power that will be fighting to be included in the mix.  In particular, will Cade Mays prove to be a real option to crack the starting five on the o-line?

Let the talking out of our asses begin.  Unleash the hounds!

  1. Jackson seems to be a kid I think will make a push for playing time at WR if he (1) shows he can block and (2) gets a grasp on the playbook early.

It will also be interesting to see the competition at RT between Isaiah Wilson, Mays, and others. All reports indicated guys thought Wilson was ready toward the end of the year.

It should be interesting to watch.

I thought I read some good things on Wilson. Hopefully he will acclimate to Georgia heat by two a days, cause we’re gunna need him when we go to COLA East. Williams Brice is built on the screen door to hell.

    • Remember, when talking out our asses, its not the number of stars of the under informed commenter that matters, but the number of stars in the heart of the commenter that matters. How does this translate to football players? Hell I don’t know, but I’ll take plenty of 5 stars just to be safe.

5 star hearts trump 5 star talent with 3 star hearts, but 5 star talent that works hard to be 5 star hearts trumps 3 star talent with 5 star hearts….or something like that.

  3. Tough to see any of the incoming receivers getting a ton of burn as there are so many bodies in front of them. I’m sure Kearis Jackson is a player, but who’s he beating out at 5-11? Godwin and Mecole aren’t losing reps to him, and he’s not going to be the Wims replacement when Ridley (and Landers) are more of a physical fit.

Brenton Cox is the No. 1 early enrollee to watch after you know who. I think that dude could be a legit weapon as a situational player in 2018.

I really expect to see Fromm’s sophomores slump to be on display early and Fields to be named the starter prior to the spring game. Early playing time for the win!🙄

Ah..lexicon nomination..”Let the talking out of our asses begin”.
Nice, poetic ring to it, and it paints a mental image that is hard to un-see.

Count me as not expecting much production from true freshman in 2018. There’s an army of returning talent salivating for starting slots and more playing time ahead of the newbees. So, for example, I don’t expect Mays to overtake Wilson at RT. With the exception of Camarda at punter, I don’t expect any true freshman to be thrown into the fire like Fromm and Thomas last year. I do expect contributions where a freshman is simply too explosive to keep off the field, like Swift last year.

I thought the ’17 coaching was vastly better than the ’16 coaching. I don’t consider Fountain a “new” guy since he was here as an analyst – and STs were far better in ’17 than ’16. Hankton and Lanning seem to be up-and-comers/solid hires.

So I expect the Dawgs to be very tough again this year. Another sec east title is ours for the taking. The only question is how high the ceiling is – do we win the secc and/or make the playoff.

A real insider (Ok…a guy in his car passing by the practice fields) tells me confidentially that it looks like Chaney has significantly updated the playbook with more screens, wheel routes and using small backs on 3rd and long draw plays. Really looking forward to a more high scoring offensive attack this season!

Does anyone know if Fields is 100%? I know he had a hand injury at the end of his HS year.

Wow, Coley made a major leap forward, with plenty of cash to go with it.

IF we’re going to dethrone saban/bama some day, I believe continuity of the coaching staff is going to be a big part of it.
