“We don’t do all that hype material. We go out and play football.”

One thing I agree with Gary Danielson about in that clip I linked to earlier is that South Carolina appeared to be the team that came out Saturday overly amped up.  That, despite Georgia being furnished with a quote or two during the preceding week that could have been milked for fake juice purposes.

“I wanted discipline and composure,” Georgia coach Kirby Smart said after the game. “Sometimes when you get into all that ‘disrespect,’ you get chippy, make bad decisions. … I don’t like using disrespect as a motivating factor.”

In other words, Smart didn’t ignore it.  He managed it.

I’ve seen some folks compare Saturday’s game to the ass-whuppin’ Alabama laid on Georgia in 2015, but, at least in this regard, Saturday reminded me more of what ‘Bama came in and did to Richt’s 2008 blacked-out team.  Give me a cold-blooded, talented team over a fake-juiced one every time.

Danielson gets too much grief from some. He sees what is going on, breaks down the game and explains it. One of the best imo, love the guy….a pleasure to listen to him.

He can be very insightful, but he too often doesn’t know when to shut up and let the game play out. He’s not unique among sportscasters in this respect, but I think his ratchet jaw grates because of our emotional involvement in many of the games he calls.

I would mind it if he wasn’t on the mark, but really enjoy what he sees on reflex before the refs call the penalty. He also calls it like it is when the refs and replay miss the call, re: the interception made by LeCounte.

I remember several years ago, can’t recall who we were playing. Maybe FU. We threw a short pass to the right flats and while the ball was still in the air Danielson said “That’s a touchdown.” We were on the other teams 35 or 40. He instantly saw the way the blocking was set up and knew it was six. Pretty impressive.

Exactly, other than Blackledge, Danielson is far and away the best color man in CFB. Don’t care for his style/delivery but he does his homework and misses nothing on the field. Always amused that all fan bases complain Gary and Verne/Nessler hate them and are biased; no better proof they are just reacting to the game and plays that are made, or not made.

Have no problem that he points out warts we may have, want an honest take on the action, even when it hurts. His comments the past few games has been decidedly more positive toward UGA because we deserve more appreciation. He is slowly changing my position on Cheney because he can articulate why we run certain plays at times, and what it may be setting up. His foresight on plays before they are run is uncanny, and he never misses what a better QB decision was available. Unlike me, his memory is flawless in recalling similar situations in past games, even ten years ago, and even of they were against other opponents. In short, he adds to the enjoyment of watching the game. Yeah, he can be wordy, he just knows so much he cannot contain himself.

Exactly. When both sides complain about bias, then you know the announcers are doing their job. For the record, I really enjoy Brad and Gary. I’ve come to prefer Gary over Blackledge, and I don’t have to pretend 1983 never happened with Danielson.

I pretty much agree but generally I detect that Gary goes out of his way to validate his statements in such a way as to come across insecure. Basically a “see, I was right, you didn’t think I was, but I’m right”.

Ugh, Gary Danielson. Underneath it all, he did not like GA. Never has. He liked CMR and a few players, but never liked the past GA teams. He always carried on over the opposition and looked for the negative about us. Last year, he may have come around somewhat, but I think he now realizes we are not a fluke and he has to get on board. Just my opinion. Yours may vary.

  11. When talking about a culture change at a program, I think fake juice is one of the more underrated aspects that can be hard for the staff to exorcise. It can sit very deep in the player’s mentality; thinking that they will have a certain edge over an opponent in part because they are going to come out amped up due to a new uniform, bulletin board material, or a slogan, etc. Instead our guys have the confidence that they have worked very hard and if they execute, things will go well. I realize that some of this has a place with recruiting, but overall, fake juice is for underdogs, not champions. If I never see that black helmet we wore against Florida again, it will be too soon.

Honestly I suspect it’s less about recruiting than about the message the coaches repeat regarding work ethic, expectations, composure, etc. I was never a Mark Richt hater–still not– but I remember him complaining about long road trips and not liking the pressure of being pre-season #1 back in 2008. Those are things that, like the heat, need to be seen as opportunities, not negatives, that are handled through poise, preparation, and hard work.

I have a feeling as long as Kirby is at the helm we won’t see games like the ‘07 Auburn Blackout or the Endzone Dance Party again and if that means no more Grambling or Powerrangers embarrassment then I’m good.

But I’ll take Notre Dames, 40+ point wins over UF and Tennessee, and games like the SECCG and Rose Bowl over Soulja Boy.

Except that it did. The energy from that ’07 blackout game against Auburn carried all the way into bowl seasons when we bludgeoned Hawaii. You can knock fake juice all you want, but I was in the stadium for that game and it will forever rank as one of the top games of all time for me. The next year? That was another story.

              • We were just better. Nearly the entire starting 22 went pro. That’s the same year we choked away games to Tenn and SC like idiots. We should have been national champs with that team.

The stadium was rocking that game. No doubt. I am sure it was a wonderful fan experience. I bet the fan experience at least year’s Rose Bowl was better.

Nobody said Fake Juice never works. Fake juice is volatile, unreliable, and can run out when you least expect it. And it has to be constantly manufactured. That’s why it is a poor thing to rely on and build a program upon.

I’m not saying those weren’t awesome times and I’m not saying we won’t blackout a game again, we use it to recruit too much not to. But as far as a tactic to gain an “edge”,Kirby doesn’t have time for that shit.

I do think it’s weak sauce to wear them against a cupcake like Louisiana Lafayette. Kirby ought to put it on the team, “Want to wear black? Beat Florida and you can wear it against Tech.”

Best quote I saw Sunday morning –

“Remember the old “This is SportsCenter” commercial with Evander Holyfield searching the offices for Charley Steiner, announcing, “Come on out and get your whuppin'”? That’s pretty much what Evander’s son, Elijah, and the rest of the Georgia backfield did to South Carolina’s defense Saturday. Holyfield led all rushers with 76 yards, but there were five Georgia backs with at least 30, and for the game, the Bulldogs out-rushed South Carolina 271 to 54.”

  14. It wasn’t long ago that we were the ones known for fake juice and other gimmicks that would make an 80’s WWF wrestler squirm. It’s so refreshing to see the other team get overly amped up while we are just going about our business.

I always think back to that embarrassing opener against Boise State back in ’11, where CMR stated the week of the game he wanted the team to “get on the energy bus” and show extra emotion. We then came out in those horrid power ranger uniforms and got clobbered by a bunch of 2 and low 3 star types.

    Two things:
    (1) I don’t think Carolina came out overly amped, I think they came out scared. Their pass catchers defined gator arms over the first couple of series — which of course led to a 1-yd fumble return by Taylor for a TD (wink).
    (2) If your team is a bunch of methodical, cold-blooded killers and they say, “Coach, we want to wear black jerseys this game,” shit, let them do it. They’ve worked hard to earn it. The extent to which some on here get wigged out over a jersey color is mind-boggling. As long as “fake juice” is the icing and not the cake, what’s the big deal?

    • Announcing a new jersey color well in advance of the game to make the players happy or impress recruits has its place, although I can’t remember Bama doing it recently. Sneaking into the locker room and hanging up new color jerseys during warm ups to get the guys all amped up is fake juice IMO.

I’ve heard Kirby say a couple of times that they make the practices so demanding that, if done properly, the game is easy. I think that’s the difference here. The best team UGA plays almost every week is lining up across from them in practice. If a receiver has to go 1-on-1 with Baker every day, or a DL has to take on the Great Wall in practice, then what are the Gamecocks (or Vols or Gators) going to offer?

Never listen to CBS announcers if I watch a SEC game broadcast. Muted. Watch the game.
Plus never listen to those ESPN game day groupies. Will listen to their game announcers based on their game calling team.
Well I got my pick 6 5 plays in. Did not take long and it set the tone for their passing game. Took Bentley 47 spins to connect.
Their top RB matched Deebo Samuel who limited to 6 catches for 33 yards and their RB had 6 carries for 26 yards.
SC only had the ball for less than 9 minutes in 2nd half.
Dawgs ran that much time of the clock in a possession of ball drive.
Coach Smart called team to sideline to get the composure, focus, and discipline back. Clean it up and drive the ball, and close it out.
Hype or overrated SC team. Think the latter.
How good is the defense? Will find out against Mizzuo. Lock is close to leaving them after this year. Been there forever, like Bentley.

That other South Carolina team has the hype and ranking.
That other Saban disciple, Fisher, echoes what Smart was saying.

The devastation that took place on the field in both places – sent a message of that the winner wasn’t going anywhere and the loser might want to understand where their place was.

Best thing about Saturday was that, even though SC scored on a long drive, it took an astonishing amount of plays to go their way:

    2nd & 10 SC 25 – PI call on Deandre Baker (warranted)
2nd & 16 SC 34 – Pass was tipped at the LOS and somehow fell to Bryan Edwards. That pass could have been picked or led to a 3rd & 16 just as easily
3rd & 6 UGA 33 – Crossing route to Bryan Edwards benefitted from extremely questionable flag pickup on pick play across the field. Zebras deemed the pick to take place behind the LOS
2nd & 8 UGA 13 – SC has to go to a trick play and baited a freshman CB into an easy score.

Four plays that could have easily gone the other way but went perfectly for SC and led to their only non-garbage time TD.

Love the way we played and as long as we can clean up the LB pass coverage, we are going to shine all season.

The thing I see us building to, but we certainly haven’t arrived at, is what you see out of Alabama in just how hard it is to put together first downs AND play well enough for 60 minutes to be in the ball game. You have to be perfect and you have to be deep.

Sure you might keep it close for awhile and you might make a few big plays, but to finish those guys off is a monumental task.

They just really stress the QB to the point that if he isn’t a special talent you don’t have a chance.

Its like McGregor vs. Mayweather. OK Conor got in some shots and looked like he had a shot in the early rounds, but you knew reality was coming and coming down hard.

Talent and conditioning and focus and fundamentals are a hell of a combo.

If we meet Bama in Atlanta for the SEC, and we win, I don’t think Bama gets into the playoff. The only reason we both got in last year was because we hadn’t played each other. I think the committee would have a harder time with a re-match if we essentially just had a playoff game prior to selection.

It all depends on how the others shape up. If they are the only one sitting with one loss and it was close then they may be in. It may depend on whether they can 1 vs. 4 with Clemson again. I don’t think they would set it up where the re-match is in the semi.

One thing I know for sure is: If we win in Atlanta, bama should be out. If we lose in Atlanta, we definitely deserve to be in. I’m positive about both of those totally inconsistent outcomes.

Even if they are one of several 1-loss teams I think it’s likely (if not certain) they get left out. Let’s just say for hypothetical shits and giggles that you’ve got undefeated Georgia, 1 loss Alabama, 1 loss Pac-12 champ Washington (only loss to Auburn in week 1), 1 loss B1g champ Ohio State and undefeated Clemson. If I’m on the selection committee, I’m going to have a hard time rationalizing choosing Bama for one of four playoff spots when Georgia just beat them. The state of Washington would secede from the Union.

I got that. What if the choice is between a 2-loss conf. champ team and an one-loss Alabama team that had been #1 all year? In that event, Bama is in.

The reason Bama snuck in is because OSU had 2-losses: OK and Iowa.

If you have a year where you have 4 conf. champs and/or ND with 1 loss or less then you’re right. No reason to know it will play out that way.

(I know I shouldn’t but I’ve already started looking at the 2019 depth chart. Holy shit. Absent an early departure, among major contributors, we lose Terry, Baker, Ledbetter and Gilliard. It’s insane. Herrien may end up being the 6th RB: Swift, Holifield, Cook, Zeus, Avery).

FYI, the rule isn’t that the pick took place behind line of scrimmage, but that the pass was completed behind the line of scimmage, which it was – the WR dove back a yard behind the line when he caught it. I only remember because I was prepared to be pissed, but turns out it was the right call.
