This ($$) is scathing.
The other concern is the Auburn offense. The No. 1 job of a college coaching staff is to win, not necessarily prepare players for the NFL. And Gus Malzahn’s system is based on rudimentary principles that aren’t helping Stidham develop as a passer for the next level – as one NFL scout put it: “If our offense is a 10, that Auburn offense is a 3.” While there is no doubt that he needs another season in college, is another year in that offense going to be beneficial to Stidham?
Well, let’s hope not.
Weirdly enough, I used to respect Malzahn’s skill in developing quarterbacks. His renovation of Chris Todd into a functional SEC starter was impressive. Then came Cam. After that, though, not so much. Marshall was a great fit in his system, but had no chance of playing the position at the next level.
Now, Gus isn’t being paid millions to produce NFL starting quarterbacks. He’s being paid to win. So on one level, being scorned by an NFL scout isn’t particularly relevant. But on another level, do you really want to become known on the recruiting trail as a Paul Johnson with lower admission standards?

That is cold. Funny, but cold. 🙂

32 million. How does this guy not know how to recruit for his offense? It’s his damn baby. He seems to always be the square peg round hole guy. After this year he is going to be sucking wind defensively. I’m going to enjoy watching the Tennessee of southeast Alabama shit show.

Gus is a highly paid high school coach whose offense is dependent on having a qb who is the best athlete on the field. Those morons giving him that huge raise and extension after his meaningless win against us and Bama last season will regret that when they want to fire him next season.

That loss sure meant something to me. Dammit.

I didn’t like it either but the payback was hell and much sweeter than the loss hurt for me. In the end, Gus and the cheetah fans saw their two rivals play for the NC after watching their team lose to UCF.

Truth. It came with a championship, a trophy, a ring, and an invitation to the Rose Bowl. Their reward was an embarrassing, very public, loss to a mid-major in the ATL.

Here’s the thing: for all the crap we give PJ about running a HS offense, the truth is that it was a system born out of necessity at the time at GSU, and PJ has tinkered and adjusted and built counters over time.
It is truly his baby as he’s the one that built it.
Gus on the other hand, was an actual HS coach running an actual HS offense that he largely copied from Art Briles.
Gus lucked in a once in a generation player with Cam and then rode a wave of luck I’ve never seen before in 2013.

What’s Gus’ best record with a starting QB he recruited out of high school?
I’d be willing to bet CPJ’s is better by 3 or 4 games.
I don’t know how anyone can be a successful coach if you can’t recruit the most important position on the field and in the gus bus system the qb is disproportionately valuable.

Without a qb who was kicked off of another SEC team with a felony arrest, Auburn is nothing. Recruiting a top qb to a high school offense is a tough sell which is why auburn has to resort to cheating to get a talented player to come in and play the qb position.

Get ready though boys…Gus seems to think his biggest need in the offense is a workhorse RB who can tote it 30 times a game.
He can’t recruit one.
He’s coming after Dell hard this offseason to “come home” to Auburn.

Meh. sos never gave a flip if one of his QBs made it to the nfl. One could argue he didn’t care whether any player made it to the league. Just look at Marcus Lattimore. He ran that kid until there was nothing left for the nfl.

Given the way he coached there, one could argue that Spurrier didn’t care if he made it to the league.
Not sure why you’re citing him as an example here, given how shoddy his recruiting was the last three years at SC.

How bad in living rooms do you have to be to have no HS recruiting success at QB with Cam helping you, a trip to the Dye hunting lodge, and some unsupervised time in the fully stocked cabin vault?

There is a reason that a small yet vocal faction of the Auburn fan base (ones that graduated with honors) rue the wins against Bama, and Georgia last season. They refer to Malzahn not so affectionately as “Simple Gus” or “Beep Boop.”
Also, I don’t follow Auburn recruiting closely, but I’ve heard it said that Malzahn decided to pass on Lamar Jackson. IMO Gus’ best bet is to send the bagmen to Jalen Hurts’ house and cross his fingers.

Gus should give 1/2 of that obnoxiously overpaid contract to $Cam. He’s the only reason Gus has a HC job right now.
