Quite the story from Bruce Feldman ($$):
A blowout national championship loss to Clemson may not have been the biggest shock Nick Saban got last week.
Four days later in Tuscaloosa, Alabama was about to have its regular morning football staff meeting when Saban noticed someone was missing.
“Hey, where’s Dan?” Saban asked staffers, according to people with knowledge of the meeting, in reference to Dan Enos, the Tide’s quarterbacks coach who had just been promoted to become Alabama’s new offensive coordinator.
Turns out Dan bailed out quietly in the night for Miami without telling his boss. As one ‘Bama staffer put it, “He moved out like the Colts.”
Not a good look for either, I’d say. Enos quickly denied the report.
That’s nice, but an Alabama beat writer contradicted Enos.

Sure makes you wonder what, if any, conversations Enos had with Kirby about coming to Athens… not to mention how comfortable Kirby would have been as the agent behind Enos jumping ship as he did.

Notice Dan’s slight of hand when he said he would never leave without telling his employer. Notice he didn’t say anything about his boss. UA is his employer, so what he probably did was email some low level HR person telling them he was leaving, while providing a forwarding address to send his final check/paperwork.

Was an excellent article from Feldman. The amount of churn in Tusky with players and staff makes you just have to tip the cap to what Saban has accomplished. Even with him being an aloof taskmaster, and the demands he makes on time, they continue to deliver and attract talented players and coaches.
An underrated point in that article was how different the job is in college from pros, the pace of year round recruiting has to be a strain on these coaches and their families over the years. It pays well, but so does the NFL and the value of personal time becomes more precious as people grow older.

Isn’t Saban known for giving coaches heck for leaving to make a lateral move? Maybe he just didn’t want to have that conversation.

In Enos’s defense, I’d say Saban doesn’t impress me as a guy who takes being turned down very well. For all we know, Nicky may be blowing up on his assistants regularly, and maybe they’re getting sick and tired of it.
But hey, the more problems and controversy that swell around that program, the better, as far as I’m concerned. Time for a new champ (with red colored helmets and jerseys, of course).
