Final 2019 Mumme Poll

A full quarter of you didn’t make it to the final vote.  Given the ignominious end to Georgia’s regular season, I can’t say I’m surprised.  But I ain’t mad — the reason I killed the MP the first time around is because we limped into the final ballot of the season with less than two dozen voters standing.

We had a total of 188 who did show up for this and, on average, they had five teams on their ballot.

Here’s the breakdown by conference:

How we spent our time on this:

No surprise there.  No surprise, either, that the participation rate from Georgia residents was the lowest of the season, at 59%.

And here’s our prediction on the national champs:

For comparison’s sake, the final selection committee rankings:

Random bits of wisdom:

  • We’re consistent, anyway.  This week, again, had no unanimous selections, which means LSU was the only team to appear at any time during the balloting this season on 100% of ballots cast — and that was only once.
  • Three teams in Tier One (appearing on 90+% of all ballots cast), as has been the case for the past few weeks, with a much larger drop to fourth than before.  Still, only four teams — the ones in the CFP — appeared on at least half the ballots cast.
  • Alabama gets a lot more love from us than the selection committee.  (For the record, I think we’re more accurate than they are about it.)
  • We match the selection committee’s top six, again, without the expense or the hat wearing concern.  And I doubt the committee members reached their decisions in ten minutes or less.

A couple of final points worth mentioning:

Here’s the complete list of all 65 ballots for the final Coaches Poll.  It doesn’t take a genius to see numerous examples of bias and conflicts of interest throughout.  And I’ll bet any amount of money you want that it took them (more accurately, their SIDs and them) a lot more time than 10 minutes to fill out.  The Coaches Poll isn’t credible and hasn’t been for a while, which is why I started the Mumme Poll in the first place.  At this point, it’s an anachronism, but if they want to keep playing at it, they really ought to take a hard look at approval voting.

Finally, I want to give a big shout out to Peyton, my partner in crime in running the poll this season.  He’s the wonk and there’s no way I could have done this as well as it played out without his kind assistance.  Gracias, man.

The MP will be back for Week Six, 2020.

  1. The number of coaches that had Florida above us was mind-blowing. That escort-service jackass Hugh Freeze had us below Florida and Auburn at #10. Hell, Dopey Dan had us ranked above them.

I appreciate you guys putting this together this year. I looked forward to it every Wednesday. I don’t post much but I read a lot so I appreciate all the effort you put into this blog. I used to read a few but as time has gone by my time had become more precious and this is the only place I come for my Bulldog news day and night.

    Thank you!!!

Nick Saban’s ballot will be pure gold for the Auburn folk – voted Alabama #5. Looks like Oklahoma was also a unanimous #4 which is kind of surprising given how wonky the coaches poll can get.

Right now, don’t think the Dawgs could beat anyone of those teams in the top 15…..especially with the WR issues and Swift not playing. Dread the Sugar Bowl, hopeful that Luke can bring some new blood.

Should just sit at home and call it a year, but WTFDIK……

My heart certainly isn’t bleeding for them, but Bama at 13 is a joke. They’d probably be favored on a neutral field against 3-12.

Which top 25 teams did Bama beat this year?

That’s the wrong question imo. What top 25 teams do you honestly believe would beat them on a neutral field? I can only come up with 3 and they’re all undefeated.

Re the question…That’s sort of my point..Bama has themselves to blame, Duke was their premiere OOC game. Duke, let that rattle around.

          Also, Buck Fama.

Listen. I think they’re ranking is a joke, but it’s a joke that warms my heart and makes me laugh. In fact, I’d be fine if they were never ranked again in perpetuity. That said if I was betting on Bama v 4-10 my money would be for Bama.

Thanks for bringing MP back! I enjoyed the weekly review of how our perception slighted with what the cfp/ap/coaches voted. One idea you may already havR in place-does week 6 precede thx first CFP? If not, maybe start earlier to see how we view the top teams before we can be influenced by what the committee says. Haven’t checked the release date, so this may be the case already. Just an idea!

I enjoyed the MP a lot this year. Gotta admit I was one of those in the past who would start with it, then fall off as the season wore on. But I really enjoyed this go ‘round for whatever reason.

Although I do think, based on comments, a lot of the people participating still don’t really understand approval voting. Kept seeing comments about who they ranked first, ranked who ahead of who, etc. Not sure what more you can do to explain it, but maybe have a short paragraph that you copy & paste into the post each week when the link to the new voting is posted. Just a quick something that explains the order doesn’t matter, each school you vote for is getting the same vote from you, and the poll is simply determined by the percentage of ballots a team appears on, but is agnostic to where they appeared on the ballots.

Oh and I know all that is explained at the top of the ballot itself, it’s just clear people don’t read it, they just scroll straight to the voting. Putting it in the post may make it more likely to be read.

Echoing others I had fun with the poll and it was my first time.

I do not understand how LSU could be omitted on a ballot, so I have to ask: did anyone vote for Louisiana?

It doesn’t surprise me that much for Bama to be under rated by the committee. They get a lot of flak for ‘over’ rating Bama, and this is a good opportunity to make up for that.

Seconding all the thanks above… I’m glad it’s back, and I’m sure I was more vigilant about turning it in than I was the last go-round. (The reminder emails helped, and perhaps also the fact that it was a fairly chalky season…)

I know everyone applies their own standards, and that’s a good thing, because it’s how we can end up with a meaningful top 4, top 10, etc., as compared to if we all just voted for playoff-deserving teams (as I do). But under any standard, how is LSU not unanimous?!

I am curious whether any of those 3 votes for Louisiana were meant for LSU, although it’s true that UL is a 10-win team with a close loss to legitimately good App State. So maybe those votes were intentional. And even if not, it still wouldn’t have made LSU unanimous. Are some people just ranking the one single team they think is best (presumably Ohio St or Clemson)?

Thanks for the work on the poll Peyton , and Senator.

I was one who checked out for the last edition – just too pissed off. Hope you understand.

    Looking forward to MP 2020
