I’ve watched a couple of things on TV lately that really made an impression.

CBS’ streaming service offered the first episode of Star Trek: Picard for free viewing for a week and I took advantage.  Can’t say I was expecting too much, but I was pleasantly surprised, especially with the level of writing.  It didn’t tug at me enough to make me willing to shell out the $5.99 a month CBS was hoping to entice me into paying, but I figure it’ll eventually migrate over to Amazon Prime, where I’ll happily tune in.

That’s already the situation with Counterpart, which Starz unfortunately cancelled after two seasons.  The show is riveting — part sci-fi, part spy fic and part study on the human condition.  J.K. Simmons is fantastic, playing two characters who are the same but different, if that makes sense.  I tore through all 20 episodes in four days.  Highly recommended.

What have you seen on streaming television lately that’s worth a look?

“Picard” is really, really good. I subscribed to CBS All Access a year or two ago for Star Trek Discovery and their other Trek offerings and have been totally disappointed. But Picard is the real deal. The first three episodes have been light on action and long on backstory and stage setting for the rest of the adventure, but I really don’t mind it because I love the character (and the other characters) and it’s the first time I’ve felt like they’re back in the actual Star Trek universe. It’s great, I can’t wait for the next episode.

I took the Senator’s advice a couple of years ago and dropped my cable, kept my internet, and got YouTube TV. There’s literally only one cable channel that they don’t have that I’d want that they don’t have, A&E. That opened up quite a bit of money for streaming services that I was otherwise paying to the cable company for channels I never used. There’s still a lot on YouTube TV I’m not watching, but I’ve got all my sports and unlimited all-channel smart DVR that lasts for 9 months if I need to record stuff and it’s much more affordable than terrestrial cable.

About a year ago, I found myself either watching sports, netflix or amazon prime. Could no longer stand all the channels or commercials on regular cable.
Made the switch to YouTubeTV and switched internet providers too.
Went from $225 per month to $90. I haven’t missed it a bit.
YouTubeTV even added GPB channels in December. Of course that was after I had added an HD antenna so I wouldn’t miss the GA high school playoffs. Ha!

While not on a streaming service the ongoing drama/tragedy that Urban leaves in his wake has a new chapter.
“A pair of Ohio State football players were charged with first-degree rape and kidnapping after an alleged incident at their apartment last week, according to the Columbus Dispatch.”
From the number of games they have played, they appear to have been Urban’s recruits. No matter where he lands, the story seems to have the same ending.

Wife and I loved “Counterpart” and hated to see it end. Maybe someone will pick it up since it obviously ended before they could “end” the series. I also love “Silicon Valley” and my wife is rewatching all of it with me now and she finally understands what I was laughing at all these years.

Watched “Chernobyl” and it was fascinating (only 5 episodes so it’s a quick one). I picked up one of the books that I figure inspired it and the book was really great.

Finally, we’re watching “The Outsider”, mainly because our friend’s house was used in the series, but it’s pretty good. I hate having to wait for each episode though. Netflix has trained me well.

I’ll also add “Brockmire” on IFC. There are 3 seasons out there, 1st and 3rd are the best. I think there’s one more coming which they’ve already said will be the last, I believe. Hank Azaria is hilarious and is the perfect baseball play-by-play man. Joe Buck occasionally appears as a parody(?) of himself and it’s funny to see him play to everyone’s assumed impressions of him.

I’ll second the above suggestion of Bosch. Of course, Connelly’s written probably a couple of dozen novels in the series, so you might not want to read them all before you start watching. Each season combines a couple of novels, so maybe just read those beforehand,

My own suggestion would be The Kominsky Method on Netflix. (Alan Arkin and Michael Douglas are at the top of their comedic games.)

Hulu recently added Justified, which is for my money, season-for-season, the best show of the Golden Age of Peak TV. Better than Mad Men, which I also love. Better than Breaking Bad which I think is grossly overrated. Better than any show of the last 10-15 years.

Better than all… except maybe Battlestar Galactica, which is a different kind of a show and for my money the best allegory for post-9/11 America, but because of NBC’s stupid upcoming streaming service that no one wants, is no longer available on the “normal” streaming sites of Netflix, Hulu, and Prime.

Star Trek: Picard is fantastic. It has a real DS9, humanity isn’t so perfect, vibe to it. DS9 being the best Star Trek show currently available to stream. I think it’s on Hulu and Netflix both, but it’s only in SD, unfortunately.

I’ll never understand why people dismiss science fiction out of hand. “I can’t deal with space ships, or robots, or stupid names like Batllestar Galactica.” Good storytelling is good storytelling, regardless of the genre.

What the best of science fiction is allowed to do, what other genres can’t, is shine a light on the realities of today, but soften the blow because of the futuristic setting. There is no better allegory for post-9/11 America and The War on Terror than Battlestar Galactica.

It’s first and foremost a military drama that happens to be set in space on a military space ship. If it was set on an aircraft carrier on the ocean, and everything else was the same, suddenly people would watch?

I don’t know why I’m continually surprised by the closed-mindedness of people, yet I am.

BSG is the gold standard for television in the last 20 years. It has an amazing cast led by Edward James Olmos and Mary McDonnell, two “serious” actors with Academy Award nominations. It shines a light on a dark time in our country and helps us see different aspects of that time through different lenses and perspectives. It won a freaking Peabody Award!

        Everyone should watch BSG.

I forgot about The Komisky Method!!!

It is hilarious. Such a great show anchored by two of the all-time greats in Michael Douglas and Alan Arkin. The second season with a barely recognizable and super-funny Paul Reiser was even better than the first. And the supporting characters are all great, too. Nancy Travis, wonderful. Sarah Baker as Douglas’s put-upon daughter, amazing. And the kids in the acting class are all fun in limited time, especially the blonde.

And it was created and is written by noted CBS multi-cam schlock-master Chuck Lorre.

I have a feeling The Komisky Method is Lorre’s actual sense of humor on the screen for us to see, and the CBS sitcoms are just him cashing checks.

Midsomer Murders is the place to start. They thought up some incredible ways to kill people. Inspector Morse is the standard by which most of these shows are judged, but it’s a bit of an acquired taste. They even have Cadfael, a monastic detective in the middle ages.

Not sure if any of you have young kids here, but I literally have little/no time to watch much of anything on TV these days. During the week, its up at 5:30 am, get kids ready for school/daycare and work all day, then take care of the little ones and get them to bed by 8:30. I then workout in our home gym until 9 or so, and it’s 9:30 by the time I finally get a chance to relax after showering, etc.

By then, I’m totally zonked and just want to chat with my wife for an hour before bed with sports on in the background that doesn’t require too much thought/attention. And on weekends, forget about it – it’s all kids, all day long from 6 am to 8:30 pm, and I’m really, really tired then. Thus, when I see all these posts about favorite shows, I’m both amazed and jealous at the same time, as I’ve literally seen zero of any of these shows/movies/series, etc.

Currently, I am watching Chicago PD from the beginning.

Similar boat – 3 kids ages 6 and under, including a 1 year old. My saving grace is I work remote from home when I’m not in client meetings onsite, so typically I avoid rush hours and the like. So overall I can’t complain much. But, either way, I have a few min here and there during the day to check stocks or post here, and that’s about it.

I too like hopping on a bike and getting a workout in that way outside when I can. Fortunately we live in a large community/subdivision where I can get 5-6 miles in without having to get out on busy roads. Oh, 4:30 am? Man, I’m a morning person but can’t swing that. Good for you.

A while back there was a series on Netflix called Losers which was decent, but the first episode is the best by far. Each episode focuses on some great athlete(s) that you never heard of, and the first is about a boxer. I don’t want to spoil it, but I highly recommend you watch it, if only that first episode.

Another Netflix series that came out a while ago was called Dirty Money. Each episode explores a different financial issue, such as payday lending, the VW emissions scandal, or money laundering for cartels. Really riveting, infuriating stuff. You could probably skip the one about the maple syrup heist, and depending on your political leanings you may want to skip the one about Trump as well.

ISP plus a TV service plus Prime plus Netflix (my SO and I are about to revenue share Netflix screw them too) and get HBO or something here or there,….but at least you have the freedom and can cancel instantly. I used Vue for 4 years. I returned to OTA for the superbowl, picture was great. I wish there was an ESPN ala carte, with OTA and ESPN that cover the fall. Google is the devil and expensive.

Altered Carbon comes out with season 2 in a few weeks. I considered it to be very good scifi. Netflix

Hanna on prime is better than the movie, I liked it, but a smaller audience.

Black Sails, Starz, under rated, They did a great job with their effects of ships at sea and based on some real life people.

Penny Dreadful was.my.stuff. Absolutely adored everything about the show and then it got crushed halfway through its final season when the cast discovered they were not being renewed in the final days of filming. Ends poorly. Sad.

Billions is great. Paul Giamanti is basically just turned loose to go wild.

I hated Discovery, and the even worse Short Treks. They’re written by people who have no clue what Star Trek is supposed to be about. The Short Trek about the guy and the tribbles was the worst (best?) example of how bad these writers are. It’s supposed to be “funny” and “haha, white man, we multi-racial-gender-diverse people will not listen to your dumb idea, because it’s dumb and you no longer have power,” but it’s anathema to what Trek has always been. The purpose of Star Trek is that ethnicity or gender don’t matter, and you try to help the socially awkward outsider by bringing them into the group, not ostracizing them. Look at Reg Barclay on TNG. In the hands of these idiot millennial writers, he would’ve been similarly ostracized and used as a comedic foil to show how “strong” Troi or LeForge are as a woman and black man, respectively, like how H. Jon Benjamin was used to prop-up Rosa Salazar’s terrible Captain. That’s the thing, the writers think they wrote her as strong and intelligent. Instead, she’s actually a terrible leader.

Star Trek Picard, so far, seems to be written by and led by the adults in the room thanks to Patrick Stewart’s involvement. Discovery and the Short Treks are written by the idiot children who think virtue signaling is the way to take Star Trek into the next decade.

Discovery is awesome imo. Best Star Trek show in years. Picard is good so far but I like Discovery much better.

I don’t watch much TV, but I did finish the Mandalorian and liked it. Disney has generally ruined Star Wars but this series is good. I also like Narcos.

My wife and I are enjoying the Office, Arrested Development and the Great British Baking Show right now.

I had that recorded to binge watch and my DVR died and had to replaced while I was in the middle of season 2. I tried to find it on demand on DirecTV but they only have season one available. I’m still waiting to see what kind of trouble the evil drunk sister gets them into. Wondering who with the out of town gambling interest and their reservation connections end up getting screwed over. I hear someone describe it as The Soprano’s with cowboy hats.

Since this is The Playpen, I am going to go off topic and put this out there. These 2 Commissioners should be packing boxes today, Rob Manfred and Larry Scott.

      From Field of Dreams
Terence: The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It’s been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt, and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game, is a part of our past, Ray. It reminds us of all that once was good, and that could be again.
Apparently Terence never met Rob Manfred. When I read his proposal I had to check the calendar to make sure it was not April Fools Day.

I’ve enjoyed a ton. Lately, I’ve blown through Versailles and The Crown on Netflix. I’m waiting on season two of After Life, the Ricky Gervais show, as well as Peaky Blinders. I’ve watched a lot of British detective shows like Broadchurch, Happy Valley, The Fall, Marcella, Safe, Retribution. On Showtime, I’m going to go through the last season of Homeland, though I’m less excited for it than I used to be about previous seasons. Ray Donovan should have probably quit a year earlier, though I really loved it at first, and same for Billions.

I really enjoyed You. I couldn’t help but root for Joe. I actually was cheering at the end of season 1 when he killed Beck. Does that make me a bad person? I read a long time ago the warning : “don’t confuse charm with character “. I think doing so is one of the most common mistakes people make. Oh yeah, the first 2 seasons of Homeland was the best TV I have ever seen. That scene in the bunker when Brody is wearing the bomb vest and is talking to his daughter was the most intense thing I have experienced watching TV.

Epix Godfather of Harlem is really good. Only one season though. the Patriot on Amazon. A bit quirky and they cancelled it, but worth a watch.

I’m on episode 3 of season 3 of The Expanse which is amazing sci-fi. Really solid stuff.

The wife and I have one final episode of Deadwood remaining and for the life of me, we can’t sit down together and watch it. We were going to tonight, but then someone offered me free tickets to Shovels & Rope at the Theatre, so…

We watched Fleabag which is just two seasons and short episodes. It’s brilliantly done. It’s definitely not for everyone, but it’s inventive and perceptive. I want to watch everything written by Phoebe Waller-Bridge now, so we watched the first two episodes of Killing Eve which is very promising, but I don’t have Hulu. That’s probably going to change soon.

Next on my list is Justified and season one of True Detective. By the time I get through that, the new LOTR on Amazon will probably be live.

If you want something quick (6 episodes), I would recommend The Night Manager on Prime.
