Of sites and stats

Given Clay Travis is the subject of this past week’s Playpen, I just had to share this with you guys:

Travis doubled down on this claim in his responses to questions sent by The Daily Beast. He also boasted the site is “growing rapidly,” as evidenced by the “tens of millions of readers, video views, podcast downloads, [and] so forth.” OutKick.com and outkickthecoverage.com attracted about 720,000 total visits in June, per SimilarWeb, and Alexa does not show signs of rapid growth for either URL over the last 90 days.

I’ve done better than his total June numbers in happier, more engaged times here at the blog, and my June numbers are over half of what his two sites combined to generate.  All that without plastering myself all over social media and television as Travis does, which makes me wonder if I could do a better job of promoting GTP than I do.

Just kidding.  Really, I mention this just to say again how much I appreciate every single one of you who visit here and lend your take on whatever in the comments.  Y’all are the best.

Thank you, Senator. There doesn’t seem to be many places left on the internet like this. I for one appreciate you keeping it around.

I take things that Clay says with a grain of salt. Given that, I take nothing The Daily Beast says with anything approaching seriousness, and even if this were the one time they actually were telling the truth I just can’t take that chance. 😂

  2. I am surprised Atlanta sports talk shows don’t have you on regularly. In particular, you could talk to the business and law angles of sports better than those they have on do.

You answered your question in your question. “Atlanta Sports Talk” has pretty much been garbage since 680 got a monopoly when 790 folded and they took on the worst of the 790 crew (Steak and the rest). It’s awful now.

AS someone who has attended 10 World Cup games Including a 14. final, a semi final and the final), 6 Olympic games (including 2 gold medal matches), an MLS Cup final and two seasons worth of sold out stadia for @AtlUtd, I can say this comments is perversely false.

I used to say the same thing but watch it like crazy now… i even feel a little guilty about watching it because i knocked it for so long. 😜 The pace of it is oddly cathartic and, unlike say basketball, it actually means something when the ball is put in the goal.

And while i pull for ATL UTD and support MLS, you really have to watch Europe if you want to watch the best soccer. And it’s all over our TVs and has been since May, although it’s mostly over until Champions league next month. The multiple simultaneous competitions and pro/rel is absolutely fascinating IMO.

What’s even funnier about calling it a commie sport is that in europe it’s actually run on PURE SPORTING MERIT, with their pro/rel system. Fighting to stay in the big leagues based on what you do ON THE FIELD is about as pure of a meritocracy as you can get. I could care less about the capital an owner has in his pocket, i want to know what somebody can do between the lines.

No, you are the best. I don’t read anyone else’s Georgia football blogs, and honestly when you stray a little into politics or art, it just makes it that much better no matter what you get from commenters. Thank you for all of the hard work and dedication. Please keep it up.

Love your site, it’s the one I visit first and probably most every day.

I do read Travis’s site as well. A lot of it is bluster, but he does have some valid points here and there too. I read a lot of different sites tho. I’m probably one of the few who regularly reads both CNN and Fox News sites. I just like seeing things from all angles. Even if some angles are a little sharper then others.

Also, totally off point, but he doesn’t have 2 different sites. It’s 2 different URL’s that go to the same site, due to him recently changing the name from “outkick the coverage” to just “outkick”. Kinda like how onion.com, and theonion.com will take you to the same place.

As stated above tho, love your site, and wish you made as much money off your as he claims to on his.

  10. It’s funny you posted this today. I was wondering this week how many other folks besides me make GTP their first stop in the morning. I think it was Chief Justice Earl Warren who said that the first section of the paper he opens every morning is the sports section, because “the sports section chronicles mankind’s achievements while the front page chronicles mankind’s failures.” Unfortunately, with the NCAA, that’s not always true.

Thank you for the kudos, but you’re the one putting out great content, day after day. You built it, we came.

    • One thing I’ll add, I don’t know how many of your readers have hosted blogs, but I’ve done it twice. Most of them lasted a year or two. It really takes an incredible commitment to put out content every single day for – what is it – eight years now? I don’t know how you do it.

I hosted a blog for about 5 years in which I provided digitized recordings of out of print vinyl records and a brief write-up about each record. Averaged posting 1 record a day each weekday. Primarily focused on 12” and 7” singles from the 80s. Everything from R&B to rock to pop to really f’ing obscure. Then, one day I got a cease and desist notice on one of the records I’d posted… I shut everything down there and then. Was kind of a relief and I don’t ever see myself putting in that kind of time and work again. All that to say… yeah, it’s a demand on your time and the Senator does an impeccable job. Cheers and Go DAWGS!

Not saying it was Travis, but I spent a week at the beach and there was a utk guy staying in the same hotel who wore the same utk shirt… every. single. day. Daytime, evenings….didn’t matter – same guy, same shirt! Either he had a suitcase full of the same shirt or wore 1 shirt for the 5 days I saw him. And from appearances I’d say the guy missed the point of SOD’s famous utk lecture on the benefits of soap.

So our family practiced social distancing on steroids. No way I was gonna get within 25 feet, which is what I figured would be the barrier for the smell test.

Your dedication to this blog is amazing. It’s very clear that it’s a labor of love for you and one that I’ve been quite appreciative of for many moons.

Funny that you mention “more engaged times.” I was thinking about that this morning. I still scroll this and 24/7 but not with the same passion and vigor I have in past years. I don’t know if my interest has been tamped down because of the uncertainty of the season or just a symptom of the virus, but it’s definitely less than it’s ever been.

    Fuck Corona. Wear a mask.

Don’t remember how I found this place, but I’ve been here since 07, maybe 08. What a time that was. EDSBS after GTP. Like several have said, I’m here most mornings but every day at some point. There have been some epic threads. Back in the day, it was Cosmic, Charlotte and Sceptic taking everyone on. The debate/war over Mark Richt will never be equaled no matter how Kirby performs. Ladies and Gents, we should enjoy it now. Blutarsky won’t do this forever. Until then, Senator, thank you for what you do.

The mid-aughts saw the birth of a bunch of entertaining college football (mostly SEC) based blogs. GTP is one of the few from that period still alive and kicking in 2020. What separates this blog from others is the consistent quality of commentary and its window into the greater world of content about what everybody here cares about—Georgia football. This blog has been a regular if not daily stop for this reader since 2007. I’m not surprised at all to see the momentum continue to build for this splendid CFB site.

Someone posted in a few weeks back while the usual suspects had each other writhing in the grips of their respective reason that ” We were all the smartest people in the room.” I’ll take that. I don’t follow any other blog but the characters here keep me tuned in because, well,…. they’re pretty damn smart.

Ah, the halcyon days of TheDawgbone, GeorgiaSportsBlog, HeyJennySlater, and EDSBS. The SECRant was still a subpage on TigerDroppings and the Rivals and Scout boards were homebase for most UGA discussion. And then there was this little upstart run by some dude who used an Animal House in-joke and a grainy picture of Vince Dooley and James Brown as his identifiers. Simpler times.
