Some criticism I’ve seen concerning Jamie Newman’s transition to Georgia amounts to an argument along these lines:ย sure, he’s surrounded by better talent, but the opposition he’ll face is a lot better, too, and besides, he had some really good receivers to throw to at Wake.
With regard to that last bit, PFF offers something of a rebuttal with this:
So, Wake’s guys were worse at getting separation last season than Georgia’s and Newman still managed to nail them downfield at a better rate than Fromm did?
I could be wrong, but it sounds like Monken has something to work with here.
Georgia with a QB that can throw down field, while hitting the short and intermediate routes. And with a WR group that has another year under their belt. A veteran pass catching tight end, accompanied by a freshman ‘freak’, who has come in ready to learn. Underused backs (especially James) ability to catch out of the backfield…
It might take two/three weeks to get it really going… Put it this way… I wouldn’t want to be UF on Halloween night.

The only thing that FU should be scared of on halloween morning when their alarm clock goes off, is the underlying feeling of ground hog day….where UGA continues to beat FU saturday afternoon after saturday evening after saturday night fall by the st. johns…..#FTMF

I don’t have the statistics to back it up, but it appeared to me that Georgia receivers had problems actually catching the ball (hands of stone) vs not getting wide open.

Let the fromm myth continue.

Even if he has the best arm in cfb, I still believe Newman’s legs are defense killers.

So far Newman has struggled a little in picking up the offense via zoom and other methods. He also went AWOL in June for two weeks. None of the coaches could get in touch with him. This was before JT committed. Needless to say, the coaches were very concerned at that time. I still expect Newman to start and if Monken can make the offense digestible he could be very good @ QB. The backup situation with JT and Dwan being 2 and 3 is better than last year.

Interesting… where did you hear this from?

I’ll just say a really good source. Otherwise wouldn’t put it out there but ask that little comments like this are left in the comments section. The awol thing surprised me and was weeks before JT was announced. I think CV and the awol deal put some religion into the QB depth issue.
