Game day post, Kentucky edition

Statistically speaking, this shouldn’t be a particularly close game.  Phil Steele’s Vegas Power Ratings has Georgia as about an 18.5-point favorite on a neutral field.  Sagarin has the Dawgs about a 14-point favorite at Lexington.

It’s always a coach’s goal to make the other team one-dimensional on offense and Kentucky makes that pretty easy.  The ‘Cats are last in the conference in passing yards per game and twelfth in passer rating.  (In their last game, they were 5-14 in the passing department, for 50 yards and one touchdown.)  They do like to run the ball, but other than Ole Miss, there isn’t another defense they’ve dominated.

They’re basically a well-coached bunch that tries to rely on their defense (third in the SEC in defensive yards per play) and screwing up less than the other guy.  UK is second in penalty yards per game.  (Georgia is last.)  UK has won the two games in which it has finished in positive territory in turnover margin and lost all three games in which it hasn’t.

Job one for Georgia, then, is pretty obvious:  First thing, do no harm.

Assuming mission accomplished there, my big question of the day is whether Monken embraces Kirby’s inner manball or tries to run some semblance of the passing attack we’ve seen through the first four games to give Bennett an opportunity to work out some of the kinks.  I can’t say for sure what we’ll see, but I have to believe Smart saw Missouri run 92 plays against UK last weekend.

As an aside, speaking of Bennett…

Oh, yeah.  Today features the number two and number eight teams in the country in punting.  Be still, my heart.

All in all, it adds up to a low scoring affair in which Georgia covers.  Say somewhere in the 24-7 to 28-10 range.  Let’s hope the Dawgs get out with a win and no injuries today.

Feel free to opine about the game in the comments.

Better be careful, I hear they had 6 INTS against MSU….and 3 against UT.

    Pretty talented secondary…

If Dawgs build a safe lead (if) by the half, will the second half be the opening of QB competition?

I’d like to see more than one QB get some reps today, but not necessarily as a public controversy. It’d be especially weird if a QB endangered his job by building a big lead.

It depends on if you see Bennett as a placeholder, or kind of a lame duck, which might be the case, but I still think (hope?) there’s some decent upside within reach. He’s got one more serious test to get us through and then it’s a month of garbage time to figure all that out.

Yep, if you base it on last week and how the Dawgs are playing defense (minus Bama) & are coming off a loss.

Kirby always learns all the wrong lessons. When he loses, he runs back to his play not to lose, manball binky.

This was the perfect week to either get Bennett more comfortable with Monken’s offense or get another QB prepared for the rest of the season.

Instead, Kirby mandates manball, a style of offense that will not beat Bama or Clemson, and he emphatically states winning the SEC East is the only goal on the table. I hope y’all will enjoy the Peach Bowl this year, because that’s all we get this year, with this defense.

What a waste of a fucking year. What a waste of Todd Monken. Don’t expect him back next year, either.

Kirby had a chance to show everyone he changed. That he could be like Nick Saban and truly adapt to the reality around him. Instead, he’s going to be Muschamp 2.0.

    Fuck this shit.

This is literally the first time I’ve ever said that in my entire life. And it’s Kirby’s refusal to move away from manball and adapt to the realities of modern college football that forced me to to do it.

He is who he is. After 4+ seasons, he has shown us that THIS is who he is.

I’m done fooling myself. Today was the day. When will your day come?

He pumped fake to nothing even though the WR was open at the snap. Just an all around dumb play to keep Kentucky in the game, and Stet is a hindrance not a help.

This defensive game plan is absolute trash, too. Play zero coverage and force Kentucky to beat man coverage in the pass game. Why we are playing two deep safeties is just assinine.

It is an indictment of Kirby that after top 5 class after top 5 class, Bennett is the best we can do at quarterback. That this staff believes this is our best option says that they are incompetent when it comes to evaluating and coaching quarterbacks. It’s certainly possible that Newman left because he saw how incredibly weak this staff is with quarterbacks. Georgia may beat Florida and get to the SECCG. They have absolutely no shot of beating Saban. None. Zero.

It feels like we are playing Stet because he gives us the highest floor, but having a 5’11 QB severely limits our ceiling as well. These batted passes aren’t going to stop and eventually are going to cause turnovers that we can’t overcome against better teams.

Playing Beck or Mathis may have more downside, but maybe game one of them grows into the job with game reps?

More than any other sport, unless you count maybe baseball managers that can’t manage their pitching staff in individual games or playoff series (ahem, Snit, ahem), there is no kind of coach with more reason to blame when things go sideways than a college football coach. They own 100% of their program. They are coach AND GM. If recruiting is bad, it’s on the head coach. If the players aren’t being developed, it’s on the head coach.

If the athletes are being wasted playing 1980’s manball because the head coach is a risk adverse play not to lose loser, well, that’s on the head coach.

          Congratulations to the Dawgs.
What some don’t get is that Kentucky and the whole set up of a noon game after a big loss and looking forward to the Handbags was a bigger order than it looked. I preached this in a couple of posts this week…but nobody responded.. Kentucky’s offensive line is good. They match up well with Georgia’s defense. They controlled the ball for a lot of the game. I don’t think Florida has the offensive or defensive line to play on the level that Kentucky did today.
Georgia can beat Florida playing manball. Nobody wants to hear that, but I believe it and I’ll take it. I could certainly be wrong, but that’s the way I see it.
All of you that think we should have put in Tom Brady…he’s not on our bench. We just don’t have anyone else right now and crying about it won’t change it. Accept reality. There ain’t no QB Santa.

Dude. You are acting like a child. Of course we love to win. But you can’t watch that game today and be confident that you will win against good teams. Are we to believe you or our Lying eyes?

Monken will be gone after this year. He’s got to be thinking what have I gotten myself in to?? Welcome to Kirby Ball! 3rd and short was the title of his teenage dirty mags.

Is this the ultra-complicated offense that people are saying Fields couldn’t run? L M A O

What didn’t they put our season on Stetson?!?

What kinda coach doesn’t know that stetson needs to chuck it 40 times and/or that the backups are better players?

We know it from the other side of a screen without being at practice!!

How can the coaches not know what we see in things what we can’t see at all?

        Settle down, Big Guy.

Go have yourself a heavy afternoon dinner and then get to sleep. Poor guy, you’ve tuckered yourself out something fierce!

I appreciate your strategy of literally ad hominem in context.

If you tried substance you’d just come off more stupid.

Okay Big Guy. Time for your handlers to turn off your mic and get you a nice big glass of warm milk to drink in a dimly lit room.

We need to put the game in our best player’s hands.

    Clearly, that’s Bennett, Kirby!!

The walk on qb over the 3 five star backs always!!!

    Let him chuck it around!!

We need to put the best players on the field. SB is not the best player. I agree.

Same way I knew Fields was better than Fromm.
Guess Kirby watched the wrong film when he started Eason over Fromm.
If you think another QB couldnt have produced the performance that SB did today, you truly are an idiot.
Shut up! No one has seen the film but the coaches. Guess the Senator should shut down the blog since his thoughts are irrelevant based on your logic.

Meh. Why open up the playbook a week before Florida? It’s Kentucky. Get the win, go home. I’m more concerned about those defensive injuries.

  112. 3 hr games should be more normal. Espn had to stack commercials at the end yo keep it from. A 2.5 hr game.

Was saying this the entire time with a friend of mine. They did everything in their power to drag that bad boy out as much as possible. Excruciating to watch.

I can’t imagine one offensive recruit sitting at home and dreaming of playing for Kirby Smart right now.

He’s gonna have to sell Buster Faulkner in a big way over the next 6 weeks, because I can’t imagine Monken sticks around for the disappointing Peach Bowl after the way Kirby must have interfered over the last two weeks.

I’m sure Kirby had multiple climaxes during this game. Man ball for the win. I need a cigarette. I’m 73 and it was a flashback game.

  117. Zeus carried the team today. It’s crazy to think so many wanted him pushed down the depth chart because other guys were breaking tackles in mop up and after Zamir tenderized the defense for them.

I still wish he’d be more decisive and keep a better base. His stutter steps and leaning over his shoes annoys me.

If he kept his head up and eliminated the stutter steps he’d bust a lot of big runs imho.

What we have here is a failure in the passing game and a QB who has not progressed much this season.
I’m all in with former legendary kicker Kevin Butler…Kirby has no passing game, and it will catch up with him and his lackluster offense.
Smart can sugar coat that game all he wants, but his QB is a major problem to success, not only with his passing game, but his play in non-passing situations.
    Same old same old offense.

Depending on what the SEC does with Mullen and the Gators, TG is going to feast on Bennett.
