TFW you hope they can keep the band together next year

Why, hello there, Arian Smith.

Damn, that was gorgeous.

I really want to see what all the moving parts, from the OC to the QB to the receiving corps to the o-line and running backs getting to play in an offense where opposing defenses are forced to respect the run pass… whew, what all that looks like with a year under their collective belts.

That’s not too much to ask, is it?

I ‘d love to think that they will all band together, but Cleveland is gone and who knows who else will be. These days one can’t count on anything being the same. I tend to think that’s why so many were upset that the off week before Kentucky didn’t develop options……………………..

Yup, if they do, this will be a very-very-very dangerous offense next year.

Dude has some serious speed. Got Blaylock to add to the mix next year. Looks like we’re good at receiver. Hopefully at QB and RB also.

Kinda looking forward to see how some of the new linemen step up. Sedrick Van Pran got some playing time yesterday….looks to be a good one. Jones looks the part….boy he looks athletic. Erickson, Webb and then we have that BIG fellow from Cochran being added to the mix…..looks promising.

Agree with some of the posters earlier, something still not right with our ‘D. I know, injuries add to it with youth…..but something is amiss.

I think the key to keeping the band together is Monken. If he stays 2021 could be a record setting year on offense.

You have it backwards: the way modern offenses work, the way this offense works, is you can run the ball because the defense has to respect the pass.

This about last week. The run was completely shut down because MSU loaded the box and dared Georgia to win by throwing the ball. Before Todd Monken, that never would’ve worked.

What I saw last night was a team that opened giant running lanes because both opposing safeties stayed back almost the entire game. This was how LSU was able to run well last season and is how Bama runs well while changing their offense to a pass-first offense.

This is what we’ve wanted. No more running into 8-man boxes. No more banging your head into brick walls playing manball. Run with the numbers and pass with the numbers and make it impossible for the defense to choose which to stop because both work so well.

It’s a mistake that makes sense, because our entire lives as Dawg fans has been run, run, run no matter how many men are in the box, and then throw off play action.

The Bill Walshian idea of opening up the run game by using the pass has finally come to Athens, GA. It only took 40 years.

Just look at Cook’s production. He’s a beast in space with the LBs worried about crossers and the safeties about deep shots and bubble screens. He’s an average SEC back in a phone booth.

Cocks D was awful last night. Didn’t even realize several guys like J Burch were COVID scratches. With several injured guys out and kids leaving school last week, that was a 6A high school defense on the field. Those holes were so big last night, I could have run for 100.

    • Can you imagine a 5 star running back seeing last night’s tape and wondering if they want to commit to this offense? We’ve had them committing even when they were running into 8 man boxes, but keep the commitment to offensive line recruitment and this offensive philosophy and the Chubbs/Gurleys will keep on coming.

Kirby has learned the lesson about top offense and quarterbacks, I hope. Continue to committing to a solid defensive philosophy and getting top level offensive talent in, and it will come together.

Next to Monken coming back, I think JT returning is the biggest key to a better year on offense. He is eligible to enter the draft after being a redshirt sophomore this year. Hopefully, he’ll see an opportunity to raise his stock with a full year leading the team. I’d prefer not to have a freshman QB start vs. Clemson.

Two years ago all the pass catchers went pro (and most barely latched onto a NFL roster and have been hanging on for dear life).

Then the QBs up and left. Along with some linemen.

Kirby’s most important recruiting list right now is the guys on the roster.

Is that too much to ask for? The Munson in me says absolutely.

With our luck, JTD makes the jump to the NFL after this season. I’d hate it…but it is our luck.

I won’t be surprised if they finally go full option and hire Monken’s cousin from Army. At this point they’re 100% aware the best they can do is have mild success beating perennial powers who are down, and then that coach will bolt for greener pastures. They will absolutely never be consistently great. But running the triple, they can consistently beat perennial powers who are down without the coach leaving them high and dry. Maaaaaybe a full on air raid disciple of Leach. Either way, pure system coach who can be a pain in the ass with nerd talent for the good teams you play, and pretty consistently beat teams you’re supposed to beat. Plus you don’t really need to spend that much on recruiting; keep all that sweet SEC football money for academic purposes… you’re Vanderbilt.

      That’d by my advice.

If they don’t hire Jeff Monkin, their President and AD need to be fired for stupidity.

Franklin won there. It’s doable. Just need the right coach and they don’t have to sell their soul to the TO. I was surprised Mason never could get going.

Franklin is exactly who I was talking about. He won there while the rest of the division was down, then left and they’ve sucked ever since. They’re never going to keep a good coach who isn’t a system guy.

He’s a fine man and I hate to see that. I don’t know why but I just like the guy. He’s a great interview with infectious confidence.

Agree he is a great guy and good coach. I just wonder how much support he got from the school. Franklin leveraged his early success to get more from Vandy’s wallet for recruiting and other resources. I doubt Mason did anything except take what he was given.
He was dealt a tuff hand with the schedule that became impossible with all the opt outs. Class guy I wish him well.

  12. I think we’ll see less and less redshirting since redshirt sophomores are leaving early. Kirby probably knows this and it’s why they were rotating guys all over the field and even more than I’ve seen from him.

There are a few guys on this roster who could declare early. Roster management and recruiting are only going to get tougher, I suspect.

Redshirts will be used mainly for injuries moving forward in big time football programs. Even for a guy like Arian Smith who didn’t catch his first pass until the 8th game of his freshman year, they want the possibility of playing instead of waiting.

Agreed. And any kid who wants to transfer out is fine. It works both ways. We can now snag anyone we want from any other school. I’d be looking over the vols roster, the cocks roster, the longhorns roster, michigans roster, hell, ANYONES roster to plug holes. Free agency has hit college football.

I truly hope that Lecounte takes advantage of the free year from the NCAA and comes back for the reason Chubb & Michel did. We finally have the pieces of the puzzle in place.

Oddly enough I wouldn’t be as bothered to see some new blood on the defensive side…
