Mr. Conventional Wisdom on playoff expansion

Yes, Tony weighs in on one of college football’s most contentious topics du jour and the results are… well, what you’d expect.

To the idea of an eight or 12-team playoff, I write a sentence I thought I would never write:

Bring it on.

I’m sure it’s pure coincidence that’s what the people running the sport want.

It is like Capt Obvious is channeling his inner 9yr old competition squad to give their best rountine in the tri-county regional in Hahira.
Where has the Tony I read in the 90s gone?

And to think, the last Mr. CW post resulted in a minor debate about whether what he does is “work.” lol. Where does he find the time for this exhaustive research?

It’s a stupid cash grab, so naturally the people most likely to cash in (media, marginally profitable athletic departments, and the bean counters associated with both) are enthusiastic about it.

Why don’t we just rotate the national championship every year by awarding it to “under-represented conferences and programs”? In an equitable world, this would happen. We can’t have some programs and conferences getting ahead by exploiting their unfair advantages in talent and preperation.

You may be onto something. Remember when the SEC had a rule that a SEC team could not go to the Sugar Bowl two years in a row? Remember when the Big Ten did not allow a Big Ten to to go to a bowl game two years in a row? The geniuses can make a rule that no team can be in the CFP 2 years in a row. Opportunity would knock for the Middle Tennessee States of the world!

  6. I’ll never get the 5 mins of my life back that I just wasted reading that.

    Shorter version:
The playoffs made bowl games meaningless so kids sat out of them. To prevent kids sitting out of bowl games, make the playoffs bigger.

    Sigh.

  7. No shocker here…not a soul expected him to stick out his chicken neck and go all “contrarian” and stand up for the traditions of college football…cozy up to the rest of the sellouts…the path is well worn, Mr. CFB…what a joke

He’s for it. He has a company ride and company per diem probably to travel to all these games and attend for free as “Press”. But how the fuck the rest of us that want to go to games work it into our work schedule and annual budgets?
