Vote of confidence

In today’s Mailbag ($$), Stewart Mandel explains why he thinks Bo Nix will be the man for Oregon in its opener against Georgia.

But given Nix has already faced Georgia three times, it’d take one heck of an offseason for Thompson or even third-year backup Jay Butterfield to convince new coach Dan Lanning he gives Oregon its best shot of beating Lanning’s former team.

I had to go back and look at Nix’s passing stats in those three games.  Pretty, they ain’t.

  • 2021:  24-43, 272 yards, 0 TDs, 1 INT, 104.30 passer rating
  • 2020:  21-40, 177 yards, 0 TDs, 1 INT, 84.67 passer rating
  • 2019:  30-50, 245 yards, 1 TD, 0 INTs, 107.76 passer rating

I think this gives new meaning to the expression “familiarity breeds contempt”.  Then again, maybe Lanning knows something we don’t… eh, probably not.

  1. If Lanning is cut from the same cloth as Kirby, he’ll have a heart attack on the sideline with Sweet Tea as his starter. The QB’s first responsibility is to do no harm.

For a guy who is steeped in barner history, cesspool and mayhem, being suited up in some kinda’ green won’t hide his past…vs UGA football…GO DAWGS!

Since Geoff Collins has faced UGA three times he has a better shot at beating us than Josh Heupel does by that logic.

not only that, but given that the other quarterbacks at Oregon have been through the Pac 12 and Bo hasn’t, by this logic he won’t be the starter the rest of the season.

  4. Bo don’t know Diddley.

He’ll be benched at sometime during the season.

I’m willing to bet Oregon doesn’t have anyone else in the QB that can run backwards from the LOS as fast as Nix

At times last year, Nix looked like he was turning into an actual QB, standing in and throwing the ball on time to the proper read instead of improvising 80% of the time. Not that it will matter against Georgia, but it’s possible he’ll finally be a good QB this year.

Mario must have left the cupboard really bare if Nix is viable as a Day 1 starter.

  8. I don’t think you start a QB who Kirby has tons of film on, but if Bo is Lanning’s best option at starter for the season then a 6 wins is probably the best they’ll do. Especially since USC has established the greatest practice ever title.

Bo Nix will have a field day against the defenses of the Pac 12. Dude’s going to be able to just run around in circles as much as he wants and eventually find some open dude, much like he did in that impressive effort against LSU’s leaky post-championship defense. He was never able to do that against Georgia, though, and it shows in the stats. I don’t think he will be able to this time, either.

It’s all fitting. When he started his career, he was responsible for an Oregon loss in the Dome and as he ends his career, he’ll be responsible for an Oregon loss in the Dome.

  11. I dunno, Senator. I’ve heard that Bo Nix has improved so much under this new offense. He’s focused AND having fun. It might not even be surprising if he was a dark horse for the Heisman…

Nix is still searching for an endzone everyday in practice vs Lanning’s D in Eugene.
