Glory days in Gainesville

Geez, Gators, when they put it this way

FLORIDA

SEC titles: 8

Most recent: 2008

Synopsis: All eight of Florida’s league championships were compiled from 1991 through 2008, a stretch that included national championships in 1996, 2006 and 2008. The four SEC title-game trips since 2008 have ended in losses to Alabama, which included a 54-16 embarrassment in 2016.

… no wonder everything before 1990 is a blur to y’all.

I believe this is what we all refer to around here as “regression to the mean,” isn’t it?

The moral arc of victory is long, but it bends toward FTMF for the Gators.

Imma come back to this post around 6:30pm and count the number of times “FTMF” has been used.

I attended that 2016 SECC game, wore my Dawg hat, sat behind an obnoxious Bama man. Leaving the stadium after the game I told him, See you here again next year, we’ll be playing you. He laughed at me.

As you’re apt to say, Senator, pump this directly into my veins. It’ll sustain me a long, long time.

We need one more to pass Tennessee. Let’s get it done this year.

I was listening to some Gator shills on the radio, and the commitments they received yesterday from a good 4-star running back and a barely 4-star QB were treated as if they were two of the top 20 players in the country. They’re really desperate for good news, and I love it.

Florida was always a mediocre dump of a football program. 1990 – 2008 is the outlier.

Remind FU fans every moment of every day about this truth until it sinks in good.

A Gator fan in their 40s would be forgiven for thinking that Florida football is entitled to greatness, given that it’s basically all they’ve ever known from about age 11 through their early 30s. But anyone that knows the history recognizes that Florida’s had two great coaches, only one of whom stuck around for an appreciable period of time, and otherwise the program has been at most merely good. Georgia, too, has had long periods of mediocrity, but the Dawgs have a lot of advantages that Florida doesn’t such as being the only true power in one of the most talented states. Florida can’t say that. And a senior at Florida last saw true greatness in Gainesville at age 6 or so and is 4-7 against Georgia in the last 11 years so you’d think some measure of reality would start to set in.

True, we’ve had periods of mediocrity but we’ve also had great runs in our history that Florida never had. Wally Butts had some great teams in the 40’s (we still need to claim a NC for the undefeated 1946 team), and back in the 20’s (yeah, 100 years ago) we had some really good teams. In my Red & Black mind, we’ve consistently been more relevant over our history than Florida could even dream about.

That’s true. Know how many times the Florida Gators have run the table in the regular season? It’s never happened. The 1911 Florida team went 5-0-1 making them the only team to go without a loss, but no Florida team has ever gone undefeated and untied. 1996, 2006, and 2008 each featured a loss along the way. Hell, the 2006 team barely escaped with wins in like, 5 games. So, yeah, I don’t get too carried away with those tales of Gator greatness.

    • I have to disagree slightly…FU had one other coach who went on to greatness. General James Van Fleet, US Army, was head football coach at FU from 1923-1925. His record was 12-3-4. And just to needle the Tennessee fans, Van Fleet was the highest ranking US Army officer to have coached an SEC team.

Not sure the term for it, but a window of time that seems big in the moment, only shrinks in the future. As time marches on, the Spurrier and Meyer eras look like anomalous blips.
