Stats dump, episode one

Josh is back at it again.

No question PFF’s grading is an acquired taste, but I still think it gives you an idea of (1) how loaded Georgia’s roster is and (2) how well Georgia develops players under Smart.

By the way, Southern Cal is going to be an interesting team to watch this year, isn’t it?

It’s very interesting to me that Clemson is tied for third in the ACC in terms of returning talent on this list — and that they are tied with Florida State in particular. Might Louisville also be a surprise team this year?

Mr. Dawg Stats is El Hombre. This must be what it felt like at the dawn of Moneyball in the As front office. Also, he sells great hats. Almost singlehandedly, he has sparked the rise of FTMF into the lexicon. Baller!

    • Totally agree, I laugh when folks bristle at using statistics and probabilities in sports…that ship has sailed…the coaches and recruiters are definitely utilizing all sorts of data points to get the slightest of edges. And we’re as lucky as a puppy with 2 peters to have Josh walk us through the analysis.

      Josh is a DGD

Amen! I dont always understand the process, but I get the results, and appreciate that someone smart enough to understand the stats is patient enough to dumb it down to where a dolt like me can follow it. Josh and Graham are both DGDs, in my book.

Interesting is the right word for USC unless they’ve added talent along both lines

USC feels like one of those NFL teams that stocks up on free agents in the off-season (which says nothing good about the state of college football, by the way). It doesn’t typically work out all that well at the pro level.

Need to downplay total snaps some here as more # of snaps doesn’t necessarily translate to returning quality & production. Example if a defense stinks, then their players could be on the field for way more snaps. If the same D staff, players return, then their snap volume could render meaningless. Conversely, if a defense is stout, they get less on field live playing time, ie more 3 & outs forced turnovers etc…and thus less snaps.
Conversely, offenses that quick strike via passing, may not have the snap volume as other teams. Chicken, egg, chicken, egg.

The Fightin’ Greatest Practicers Ever on a College Campus have a joke of a schedule in ’22. I’d predict they float into the playoff on a cloud of creampuffs if I hadn’t watched so much PAC 12 the past few years. They’ll manage to lose 2.
