You can’t say he didn’t try to warn us.

And before you try to blow that off, keep in mind something Weiszer pointed out.

The Golden Flashes entered the day as the third highest rated opponent that is on Georgia’s home schedule, according to the Sagarin Ratings.

Kent State was No. 86. That’s ahead of No. 88 Vanderbilt, No. 113 Georgia Tech and No. 150 Samford.

On a related note, can I say that I find the meltdown about the game prevailing on message boards and the comments section here to be a little funny?  I mean, some of the same folks who have been assuring one and all that when it comes to where to play the Cocktail Party game we should defer to Kirby’s infallible judgment in all matters are out there beating various drums today about his misguided faith in some of his assistant coaches and players.

As much fun as we have mocking other fan bases, maybe we should take a look at ourselves sometimes.

No one was saying that after we trashed Oregon and South Carolina. By the way, Oregon is now 3-1 and will be in the top 15 in the new polls probably. Anyway, takeaway a few turnovers and some dropped passes and a lapse of focus on fake punt and that game yesterday would probably have been around 40 something to 10+ something and no one would be saying anything about Searles today either. I don’t think Searles is as big a problem as some think. just saying….

You do realize we are averaging 42 points a game and 531 yds a game, don’t you? We have given up 2 sacks all year…TWO!
Uh, I think most any team in the country would loooooove to be putting up O numbers like that. Don’t sound like our OLine is doing too bad. Sorry, bro….but the math don’t lie.

I’m not sure that I couldn’t do a better job than Geoff, what with my experience coaching middle school baseball and all. ee knows a lot about football and Froze, I’ll keep a bottle of Jameson handy at all times. After watching Kirby’s press conference where he was totally calm and composed, I reached the conclusion that he got exactly what he wanted from this game. He wanted to see his team humbled a bit, and that happened. He seemed almost happy, or as close as he gets, to be able to say “I told you so” to everyone. I think he knows that he still has a great team that, when focused, can dominate the competition, but now they know that focus matters and hopefully won’t lose it again this season.

  7. The game came down to turnovers. We come out and score immediately on a beautifully blocked Bowers around (I guess Searles coached well on that play). We immediately get their offense off the field. Then, boom, Ladd muffs a punt that he should have fair caught. They go backward and kick a FG. We immediately start driving, and SBIV makes an awful throw that gets picked. We block the punt for a safety. We take the free kick and drive the ball until SBIV takes a deep sack to kick a field goal. We get the ball back and drive for another Ladd fumble in plus territory. At that point, they had 2 yards of offense and 3 points while we had 12 points and a ton of yards.

Without our mistakes, it should have easily been at least 17-0 at that point. Game is likely over.

I knew I was gonna take heat when I said I would have benched Stetson in the first half, but I didn’t mean for it to be the typical “he’s not good”. I was thinking that Beck might get Ladd and the O in general back on track.

My thoughts exactly. I didn’t get to watch the game live so I’m just now going over the replay. Ladd had a dreadful game. The muffed punt and dropped TD pass costs us 9 to 14 points. Then Bennett under throws a ball a bit and it turns into a INT. That’s another TD we probably miss out on.

A team that turns the ball over is akin to someone using a knife in gunfight. The odds really get stacked against you fast. We did it three times!!

The defense looked ok in the first half except for some WR screens. Those look like leverage problems on our end. We had guys there to make plays but were out of position.

I’m not too worried about anything I saw. We know Ladd can catch. He just had a bad day. We were moving the ball all over the field before the turnovers. It’s not like we were going 3 and out and punting over and over again.

Wonder who needed more humbling. The football team or the fan base? No I’m not. The fan base. That was made clear after beating a team by 17, where the score could have easily been by 35.

They will travel to Missouri and finally play at night next week. Georgia by 40 or more.

Then come home to an Auburn team that might have a new head coach (they get LSU, who has figured out how to play football again). Georgia by 40 or more (unless it’s after Harsin’s is fired – where it will be 28 or more). Then Vanderbilt, where they will win by 35 or more and then the break.

Oh the humanity of it all…

    Go Dawgs!

At the expense of sounding like captain obvious, yesterday was either a wake up call or a canary in the coal mine.

    Liked by 2 people

    • I’m guessing a little of both:

Wake-up call – we have traditionally been lousy and unmotivated against inferior opponents in noon start times. We realized (I hope) that we can’t just roll the ball out there and win.

Canary in the coal mine – the defense between the tackles in the run game has had suspect moments in all 4 games. KSU saw something and began to exploit it. They don’t have a Tank Bigsby that can use it.

There are some people who will never be happy every fan base has them. Social media gives them a platform for their stupidity.
If you agree with Mike Griffith often you might be the problem. Leave the game in Jacksonville tradition matters.

Kirby’s lucky all he has to do is line the team up and have them look in a mirror to see their problems. – 3 in turnovers and you still win going away. Very lucky it was against a team incapable of making it hurt really bad.

Bennett looked from section 319 that he was going to that WR no matter who else was open or whether the WR was open.
I can’t get too anxious about the results because I knew that this defense couldn’t be as good as it was last year and this was not so much a close game as it was not the parade of ass kicking that we’ve seen since the first week of last season from the UAB game to now save the two games against Bama.
We’ve got three bad teams scheduled the next three weeks then a bye, Florida (who looked good on offense but maybe because they played) Tennessee (who looks solid on offense but can probably only beat us if they score 60), Miss State, Kentucky (who were in a dog fight with Northern Illinois) and Georgia Tech.
It sets up well to work on a lot of issues and peak in December and January.

I saw the same thing from Section 106. That and the sack he took were the two Questionable Stetson plays I saw yesterday.

At least the pick was an air punt that led to a safety.

      • It was on 1st and 10 in plus territory. You air punt on 3rd and forever in minus territory not on 1st and 10 in what was likely going to be a score of some kind. It took at least a point or 5 points off the scoreboard.

It was a bad play caused by a boneheaded decision where he didn’t even appear to check down (where I believe he had guys open).

It wasn’t a bad decision. It was combination of not a great ball, and a piss-poor execution by Rosemy-Jacksaint in the route.

      • The DB was in position and the ball appeared to be underthrown. Maybe if the ball was thrown further, it’s a score.

The only thing MRJ could do based on seeing it from my seats on the other end was to interfere and take a 15 yard penalty.

It wasn’t a Malaki Starks play from the Oregon game.

Agreed. The pass wasn’t that bad and Jack-Saint let the defender undercut him. Good play by the defender.

The scoreboard was simply a direct reflection of when one team literally dominates the stats but loses the TO margin 1-3. Even the best of QBs are gonna throw picks, as well as the best other players occasionally fumbling the ball. If you remove those 3 TOs and/or add them to any or all of the first three games you’d have gotten similar results, a sloppy win that was never really in doubt. In addition, we saw a similar lackluster 33-0 win two weeks ago against another opponent that was hard to get up for, without the TOs I might add, followed by an outstanding focused performance on the road in a hostile environment against a more formidable foe. These are college kids who the coaches have to continue working with all season to stay focused and execute. The talent level and coaching skills we’ve undeniably seen are still there.

I will add however that some of the defensive breakdowns caused me some concern. Yet, relative to last year, this is still a rather experientially young D who was missing it’s best player upfront. Fortunately, when the O gets back to peak performance, the schedule should allow for some further development prior to post-season tests.

    • I think a lot of people confuse “hard to get up for” with “Coach uses these games to work on things and develop the players as opposed to trying to go out and show off against inferior opponents.”

I’d be interested in the snap counts and the play design. The end-around to Bowers… we’ve seen it a few times. We’ve done it from different formations, doing different motions into it… Every time it goes on tape, it reinforces the idea that another team has to prepare for it. This time, it scored from 75 yards out… the question is – what’s the wrinkle that comes down the line, that breaks the back of a better team?

The gashers in the run game – do we know the run fits were bad, or that the players simply didn’t play with enthusiasm? I don’t know that either of those things are certainly true ATM. Maybe they were.. or maybe the play calls put us in a disadvantage, because Kirby wanted to force those guys to fight from a disadvantage, and grow. I dunno.

That game was literally never in doubt, despite what the commentators had to say. “Kent State is giving Georgia all they can handle.” Yet, the offense moved freely up and down the field, scoring on seven possessions and one of Kent State’s possessions.

There was some poor play. And there was a game plan that was never going to fully exploit our advantages over them. The result was a 17-point easy win. Sorry if you lost money on the spread. I did.

      Go dawgs.

Talk about choke and panic artists. We coughed the ball up, and dropped passes, and threw the ball behind folks – and that kept them them in the game. So we came out flat for once – it happens. Dont sweat it. From what I saw, ToothNation and the Handbags have zero defense, Missu and the Barners both stink – and the season stays the same – Bama at the end of the year. Take a chill pill.

I was not particularly impressed with either team in the meteor game and this Georgia team should beat everyone else in the east by at least two touchdowns. That being said, if we play like we did yesterday against Tennessee, Kentucky or Florida we’re gonna lose. If the team understands that we’ll be just fine.

I just watched the highlights on YouTube. Watch Kirby talking to Lewis after the game. Kirby seems honestly impressed and shakes his head after the handshake and not in a disgusted way but rather like he enjoyed the competition. So I don’t think his presser postgame was a lot of coach speak and puffery.

Stinker of a game, primarily because of a large number of mistakes in addition to a lack of excitement. Kirby was about as laid back as he gets. If I noticed that I am sure the team did. The fake punt failure is something that needs work. Perhaps Kirby or one of the other coaches noticed. If not, surely they will pick it up from this blog.

One other thing our bloggers need to make Kirby and his coaches aware of is that we had trouble adjusting to the hurry up with a dual threat quarterback. I hear Kirby has incorporated that some in his practices, but going live against a team that actually does it a lot can help down the road.

I couldn’t see the first half on that crappy SECN plus, which was probably a blessing in disguise. But in the second half it looked like Bear Alexander played a lot. He played well for a true freshman but that may be damning him with faint praise. I have to wonder if injuries besides Jalen Carter impacted the defensive line, which generally had a bad day.

A 17 point win is disappointing, but that shit happens. It isn’t exactly the end of the world. Georgia will grow from it and Kirby has a history of getting the team better as the year goes along.

Alabama struggled last year for a goodly portion of the season. They shaped up by the end of the year and we saw what happened there. They still didn’t have enough to pull it off in the end, but their road was rocky also. I’m not very concerned about this. I’m sure the cupcake was a wake up and not red velvet.

I say this with total disrespect to Alabama but they were totally lucky not to be 8-4, then played way above their talent level in one game to catch the best team in the country on an off day. That’s it, that’s their 2021 resume. We should not be happy being 2021 Alabama, because we’re better than that.

Well from this senior citizen, my Munson was on full throttle after the Ladd muff, fumble and dropped passes. If our good little white boy is going to screw up that much, heaven help us. Kent obviously game planned for our outside game and it showed. Seriously, the only thing that got me going was the line of scrimmages. Let’s face it our Dline is not as great as last years. They are movable on running plays but seem better on pass plays. After a couple of adult beverages I calmed down. Ugly win but I’ve seen uglier.

I came away no less convinced of the talent on our team or the potential. The benefit of playing a cupcake like Kent State is that you can see areas to work on. Kirby‘s right there. As an amateur but long-time watcher and fan, the issues I came away with are run-blocking and stopping the run. I’m sure those will be addressed this week. But they have been issues for a while. And, Florida and Tennessee, for all their deficits, have some strong interior players on both sides of the line.

To my Madden-trained eyes (not a claim of expertise but the opposite), it appeared that scheme and play variety were dialed back substantially leaving the players with the challenge of executing a more basic offense and defense. I took Smart’s halftime comment of not needing to change the game plan as an allusion to that. Can any real football gurus tell me if I’m correct or not?
