The greatest five-loss season in the history of college football

Now this is some funny shit.

I mean, I’m in the camp which believes that South Carolina has to be considered the favorite to win the SEC East this year, and I still can’t help but chuckle over that “scariest offense in the nation” line.

    We still have 3 months until football season, I’m afraid we’re going to be seeing a lot more of this kind of stuff. Preseason national champs indeed! (But I’m still scared witless of playing Carolina this year, but that’s just because I live in SC and I know if UGA loses, I’ll hear about it everywhere I go.)

    They have the same record every season. They ALWAYS lose 5 games! The only difference between last season and any other Cock season is that all the planets aligned on a jubilee year and the REAL teams in the SECE had historically bad, 1 in 30 yr type, seasons all in the same year. I fully expect this team to lose 5 games yet again, but I wouldn’t expect UGA, UF, and TN (prob should include KY given how bad a program USCe is) to have terrible seasons again.

        The Cocks have failed to lose 5+ games in only twice in the last ten years. In fact 5, 6, 6, 6, 5, 5, 5, 7, 7, 3, 4 from 2010 back to 2000 (and those last two immediately followed 11 and 10 loss seasons). I see a consistent football program over the last decade. The only difference last season being the performance of the rest of the SECE.

          I was really pulling for Clemson in the USCe/Clemson game last year. If Clemson had won USCe would have finished the season with 3 straight losses and a record of 8-6. Damn those Clemson Tigers going into the tank and letting USCe off the hook like that. But what can you say about a school where their best season (and only season where they won any kind of championship) since joining the SEC is 9-5.

    Garcia will implode. The question is just when? If –IF–they win 6 or 7 straight, the pressure is going to be too much. The state will be calling for their tickets to the MNC game. Spurrier will be riding his arse. He’ll realize there is nothing the Ole Ball Coach can or will do to him. Then They’ll probably lose to Ky or Tn.

    Past performance is not indicative of future results.

    Anyone who watched the SC-Alabama game knows the Gamecocks have the talent to play 4 quarters with any team in the country. The question with Carolina is always “will they?” And previous results have always demonstrated the same answer. They’ve never been able to catch lightning in a bottle and make it last.

    However, unlike the previous editions of this team that could be counted on to fall apart or hit a talent plateau at 8 or 9 wins, this group of players has a much, much higher level of potential. If they figure out how to put together 4 quarter game efforts with any kind of consistently, they have a chance to be the kind of scary good team that warrants such a pre-season preview.

      As impressed as you are with the SC game against Alabama let me point to their game against Auburn. A 17-56 drubbing at the hands of the Barners. Bama lost to Auburn by one point ….27-28. For all its experience Georgia’s O line did not show up in 2010. Their RB’s lacked character and the 27 points a game average didn’t matter because of a new Defense game plan and D coaches. SC’s O line is about in the same shape as the Georgia O line this year and their D is no where near as strong or talented as Georgia. I won’t argue over the Georgia secondary… I believe they will be fine. In summary , everyone (East) was down in 2010… SC made hay off a stud RB and a working class Defense. Without that RB they lost to Kantucky. The East in 2011 is Georgia’s for the taking. SC won’t steal one this year.

        I sincerely hope you’re right, and Carolina answers the “will they?” question with the same answer they so often have. Lord knows, Georgia has had a share of talent-potential squanderings (I’m looking at you, 2008 season).

        But that’s the thing…Georgia’s O-line from last year should have been better than it was. If SC has the same type of O-line, they’ve got the talent to contend. Their D isn’t as good, and yet their D has kept them in far more games than they’ve lost over the years. That D always seems to play above their talent and their potential. (Especially against Georgia.)

        They’ve got more pieces in place for 2011 than they’ve ever had, and no other team can count on them psyching themselves out as they so often have: they know they have talent, scrappiness, a bit of backed up swagger, and that they can play with anybody. That is a scary combination for a team facing a schedule with an under-pressure Georgia, a dumpster-fire Tennessee, a realigning Florida, a Mallet-less Arkansas, and a NFL-gutted Auburn on the road to get to the SECCG.

        If they were ever going to contend, 2011 is their shot. They have to know that.

          Well sir, I hesitate to doubt your sincerity but I have seldom heard such positive comments from a Georgia fan about a rival team. If it were possible I would suggest a polite wager and hope for the best. None the less, you have been well stated but I just can’t see the merit for SC contending again. They had their moment and it has now moved on. I agree with the everyone continues to rebuild (FLA.and the Hillbillies) but I believe you underestimate the Dawgs and have overestimated the Cocks. Lightning in the barrel indeed. No way Dawgs lose at home in 2011. “No way …no how!”

            I cannot apologize for my respect of this (or any) opponent. While I can’t claim to be in the pessimist camp, neither will I wear Red & Black colored glasses. Here’s why:

            Once upon a time in 2000, I took some measure of undergraduate fan swagger into Williams-Brice Stadium. My first away game. Dawgs were ranked in the Top 10, and much was made of Carolina fans tearing down the goalposts after their previous week’s win over Cupcake U. Who tears down their goalposts like that? Beat somebody, if you want to behave in such ways. Like a Top 10 opponent.

            Right.

            Later that afternoon, I promised I would never forget the feeling of seeing their goalposts coming down at Georgia’s expense.

            The next year, I had a deep, stable faith that the Gamecocks would no way…no how be able to take two in a row from the Dawgs. They would not be able to catch lighting in a bottle twice, especially in a night game in Athens. I walked into Sanford with that same fan swagger. It died there that night, and I have been unable to underestimate an opponent since.

            Especially an opponent that takes far more games from Georgia than they ought, and generally keeps the games they do drop to the Dawgs much, much closer than they ought to be.

Wait until you beat a major rival or some team ranked in the Top 10, right?

            Right.

            I stayed for the whole thing, and made sure to watch until those goalposts were gone from the stadium at Georgia’s expense, so I could always remember the difference between what should happen, and what actually happens.

            By the time the next year rolled around, I had a deep seated faith that there was no way, no how the Gamecocks would catch lightining in bottle again, and take two in a row from Georgia, especially on a Saturday night in Athens.

            Since then, I tried not to underestimate a Carolina team that wins games against Georgia more often than they ought, and who drop games by margins far less than can be considered comfortable.
