Wednesday morning buffet

More nourishing items than you can shake a stick at:

  • ESPN is high on Georgia prospects for the 2013 draft:  “No other team had more than three prospects on the list. Georgia had four off its defense alone, led by senior nose guard John Jenkins, the No. 5 overall prospect on the list.”
  • This year’s Georgia motto – “Our team. Our time. No regrets.”is team driven.
  • Is there going to be a struggle naming selection committee members?  If so, I’d be glad to help.
  • When you’re facing an NCAA investigation, the news that you’ve had to disassociate your program from a booster ain’t the kind of news you want to be making.
  • Run Lindsay Run asks the musical question “Does UGA under-recruit or under-develop offensive linemen?”
  • Win projections for every team at College Football by the Numbers.
  • Georgia and Florida try not to look ahead to their second-week matchups.
  • Brian Cook thinks the SEC is allowing in-stadium replays of controversial plays from the TV network feed “to prevent biased home-field folks from ramping up outrage by selectively picking favorable angles”.  No doubt Marc Curles agrees.
  • Here’s the list of ESPN’s top 25 markets over the last decade or so.  I wonder if the guy who thought the ACC needed to break into the Boston TV market still has a job.

Somehow you missed Schultz’s column on Grumpy McDipshit from this morning. Great for a morning laugh:

Tired of reading about player’s draft projections. Screw the NFL. Lets win a championship damn it.

Any concern that Sheldon Dawson was mentioned in that piece on the MSU booster?

It would be more interesting to see that number extrapolated out to the size of the market. For instance, when you account for the number of households in the Birmingham market, that 5.9 share works out to around 44k households watching. For comparison, Atlanta’s share is around 81k and LA’s is around 79k. Birmingham is more comparable to Detroit (42k) and Dallas (40k). I’d be interesting to see what New York’s ranking is since that market is three times the size of Atlanta’s.

As far as I can tell, Atlanta is the #1 market for college football in America (not a surprise).

Good call Fisheries … it will be interesting to see how the TPTB in college football use these numbers to change the management of the business end of it. College football is not capturing fans in the largest TV markets – only 9 markets appear on both the Top 25 College Football Markets and the Nielsen Top 25 TV markets with the ATL as the highest. Maybe the LA # moves a bit with USC being ranked and eligible for a championship this year or maybe not. I would like to see how the Top 25 NFL markets compare to these numbers.

There are so many sports markets in LA that I think College football gets diluted in audience. Plus, when you can only get Pac-12 or,to a lesser extent, some Big-10 teams during prime viewing times, your viewing pleasure is diminished. The East Coast noon kickoffs needs the hearty beer and chips crowd on the West Coast to gear up for watchin’ at 0900hrs. A lot of that crowd will use that time to begin sleep after a big Fri nite.

Totally agree Cojones – but after the Rams moved to St. Louis from LA, many observers predicted that the NFL would HAVE to go back there in order to guarantee strong NFL ratings. I would love to see the TOP NFL markets and if LA pays attention to football at all. The television deals for college sports have long been about putting as much product on the airwaves as possible – any day, any time, any channel. For the most part, the NFL still adheres to a less is more format. Games are still blacked out in home markets that don’t sell out. The full NFL package is only carried on DirecTV. The majority of the games are still at 1:00 & 4:00 on Sundays and the ratings are very strong.

If college football is going to end up paring down the # of schools in FBS to around 64-75 as predicted, I would expect that conferences will get together to adopt a more “NFL” type approach to television broadcast to maximize ratings, fan interest, and revenue.

Funny you mentioned the Rams. That was the first football event in LA that I attended and it was short of passion for the home team. But at that same time, attending a “Forty Fucking Niners” game in SF was loaded with maniacs. They had a losing record, but the stands were full of football impassioned souls. Could have been because they were playing the Dolphins.

            Differing venues, differing passions.

  7. What fresh hell is this?

If the coaching staff isn’t looking ahead to MO we need a new staff. Practice reps are few and finite and I can’t believe we’d be using many of them to specifically prepare for Buffalo.

Sometimes tht’s the reason that I don’t want to read the prepared selection because, in there somewhere, will be some noncredentialed dumbass spouting energy- killing bullshit aimed at us.

Senator, what’s to happen with the postponed A&M/La Tech game? Will our Fabris pool not get off without a lot of qualifications? Once Isaac started it was bound to interfere with at least one game in the rain path. I waited until today to begin picking. Since some have stated that they already picked, can they change their choices to reflect the changing positions of those teams at an Oct date?

  9. This may be off topic here but if finally found an obvious reason why Spurrier likes to get GA early. It is not only what he was referring to GA have some athletes suspended early in the season, he also gets to practice longer due to his earlier game at least for this season which is likely the true reason he is quite upset as he has planned for this extra edge against GA.
