You may have noticed that Tennessee’s defense sucked last year. Evidently things haven’t gotten off to a swimming start in spring practice either. This should not be a concern, because Tennessee’s defensive coordinator has a proven track record that goes back years of fixing bad fundamental play. No, really:
This isn’t necessarily cause for alarm.
Jancek noted this isn’t the first time he took over a defense that needed to improve its tackling. He previously worked as a defensive coordinator or co-defensive coordinator at Cincinnati, Georgia and Central Michigan.
Now that’s a bit rich. Jancek showed up in Athens after VanGorder’s departure. Tackling, like most other fundamentals, was most definitely not a problem before Jancek began his coaching stint in Athens. But tackling, like most other fundamentals, deteriorated almost as soon as he started working with the linebackers. It never got better. Which is how Jancek found himself let go by a head coach who’s famous for his loyalty to staff.
And let’s not forget that his co-defensive coordinator at Georgia again works with Jancek.
The best thing Tennessee’s defensive staff has going for it in 2013 is that it’s replacing a group that was much, much worse than what Jancek followed in Athens in 2005. Unlike then, there pretty much isn’t anywhere to go but up in Knoxville. But none of that changes Jancek’s performance during his time here.
Shhhhhh!! Don’t tell them… I want the Vols to be surprised…

TN fans are really jumping on the Butch Bandwagon for no real reason other than a little charisma. They’re so desperate to return to the old Fulmer days, they’re giving the benefit of the doubt and then a ton more.
It’ll be really fun to see the fallout after they have yet another losing season this year.

Is this any different from jumping on the Kiffin or SOD bandwagon? From the haywagon to the bandwagon. Evolution of a Vol.

Jancek’s LBers at UGA played with their shoulders parallel to the sidelines rather than to the LOS. It was a very obvious flaw that even I noticed. He hung a two-year starter out to dry who played out of position due to another LBer’s injury creating a scapegoat for his lack of coaching.

It’s funny Tennessee fans think Richt has underachieved but Jancek and Martinez had nothing to do with it. What LB did Jancek ever coach to even All SEC honors at Georgia? Heck the only one that was notable was Curran but he started as a true freshman which means he had the skill coming into the program. Jancek did zip, nada, nuthin for any Georgia LB and I’m happy to see him in Knoxville.

Don’t forget that Jancek resisted starting Curran as a freshman.

“….anywhere to go but up in Knoxville .”.
I don’t know, Senator, it would be nice to give them another thump downward this year. Jus’ for ole time’s sake, mind you.
If you meant that he was going “butt up” in Knoxville, that has a ring to it as well.

Roll old AM out and Willie and Jancek will be so surprised they won’t be able to recover. How lucky are we to be able to face these two clowns.

That and run between the tackles. Plus the wheel rout as said by UGA below.

uT’s run D was pretty much on par with Georgia’s. Their pass D was a mess.

Can I assume that after this year their their pass and run defense will be a mess?

I think Tenn and UK will compete for who will be 1-7 or 0-8 in SEC play. Vandy will prob beat enough teams to overtake Missouri. Will actually be kind of funny, as Missouri and Vandy play the same teams in SEC this year.
I predict:
1-2= UGA/SC
3=UF
4=Vandy
5=Missouri
6-7= UK/UT
