This gave me a chuckle, for more than one reason:
Georgia tailback Todd Gurley practiced at full speed on Monday and by all accounts, he looks close to 100 percent for Saturday’s game with Florida. But he will still have to beat out freshmen Brendan Douglas and J.J. Green in practice this week if he wants to regain his starting spot back against the Gators.
“Puh-leeze,” Douglas said with a laugh. “Yeah, right.”
Said fellow tailback Green: “I don’t think I ever had a job. I was just filling in for him…”
If Gurley’s healthy and not starting Saturday, somebody had better articulate an awfully good excuse for that in the post-game presser. Right now, outside of compromising pictures, I can’t think of one.
Get The Picture 
I really hope Davis and/or Wooten can step up and stretch the field with a healthy Bennett working under and over the middle. That will help give us a dimension that we didn’t have the last game and help Florida from totally stacking the box on us. Or vice versa, hopefully we can protect Murray enough to go over the top when the do stack it.

On a positive not (from Georgia’s perspective), Florida’s defensive line has been killed by injuries, though half the guys they were missing against Missouri will probably be back this week.

I hope the return of Gurley also means we abandon the ultra-conservative playcalling. I’d like to see us at least TRY to throw the ball downfield. Hard to believe the number of 1 yard gain/loss pass attempts we’ve racked up the last few games. I think if we ever did a review on those playcalls, we’d quickly see there’s little benefit to sending a receiver one yard down field. Gurley can get that much yardage falling forward.

Awfully (!) good reasons for Gurley not starting Saturday:
– The SEC creates a new rule (which will be rescinded on Monday) that if any tailback who failed to start in the preceding 3 games starts in the 4th game, the result will be a 25 yard penalty and ejection of the player.
– Gurley drives a scooter out of an alley and past one of the ACCPD’s finest; unfortunately, he happens to be carrying a “suspicious backpack,” which results in his arrest, impoundment of the backpack, and an immediate suspension while the matter is investigated, which cannot be completed until NCAA lawyers come to town sometime the next week to assist. (It will turn out that the suspicious backpack contained a returned test with an “A” score, a couple of textbooks, a notebook and a love letter from Aaron Murray. The NCAA will complete an investigation of the “A” test on March 27, 2014, mercifully concluding that it did not constitute an improper inducement from the grading professor.)
– Mike Bobo has already drawn up the first 5 plays, 4 of which call for J.J. Green to run between the tackles and the 5th of which calls for Brendan Douglas to catch a screen pass, and there’s no time to draw up new plays.
– Todd Grantham’s defense gives up a 15 minute opening field goal drive to the Gators; the Georgia return man fumbles the ensuing kick off on the Gator 10 yard line, resulting in another 15 minute drive and a touchdown for Florida; while exiting the field for halftime, Gurley trips over a CBS camera cable, making head to head contact with Michael Bennet, and both are ejected for targeting.

I think it’s in Gurley’s best interest to sit out a few more games. I just don’t think the training staff should rush things. Let him heal, he has a great future ahead of him.

I hate to be the one to point this out but Gurley is just one player and as great as he is UF’s D will load up to take him away. Now if our sometimes mediocre OLine can try holding their blocks for more than 3 seconds there might be a chance to loosen them up but I’m not going to hold my breath. Florida’s D has overcome their injuries better than UGA’s O and that spells low scoring and a special teams type of game. In case you have been out of the country or in a coma, our special teams suck. We can’t over come another 21 point special teams screw up.

How so? Gator defense gave up more yards to Mizzou than Georgia’s did.
