The cool part of the afternoon

Time for the opener’s been set.

Could be worse, that’s for sure.

  1. Not sure about that, Bluto. Could be the hottest time of the day.

  4. Do we get the glowing reviews from Musburger like Clemson did last year since it’s at our place this time? Last year was five mins of buses and Musburger going off like a little kid about how the clempson players running down and touching their little rock was the most exciting 15 secs in sports.

It was definitely the most exciting 15 secs for Clemson when they played FSU

    • The answer is NO. I’m glad you mentioned it.

I thought about that last year when the pregame was going on. I’ve never seen such a dramatic bunch of promotion garbage, as if CBS had decided to, in effect, place the Clemson tradition at the top of CF. They used 10-15 minutes of air time, at least.

It was Mushmouth at his finest, as only he can do it. Creating something out of nothing. Players bused because the stadium is so ill-conceived that you can’t get from the locker room to the entrance of the stadium without a 7-minute walk? Sure, what a great tradition.

I’ll stop. But that was the most blown-up piece of garbage hype I’ve ever seen.

Georgia’s tradition eats Clemson’s blood raw. But I’ll bet we don’t get that 10-15 minutes of pre-game air time, much less the crazy hype from Mushmouth.

I like it. Should be a good crowd.

honestly, it doesn’t get much worse than 5:30 that time of year. Because most of your tailgating is done during the hottest part of the day (noon to 5) and it stays hot until until 8 or so before it starts to finally cool down when the game is almost over.

That time of year, the game is really better at either 1pm or 8pm.

    Oh well.

  7. Sanford was rocking that time of day last year for USCe. It beats the heck out of playing at noon when the crowd especially the students would be sleepwalking into the stadium. I would have preferred a night game, but the games in Atlanta and Dallas get those slots. If a Georgia crowd can’t get ready for Clemson, turn in your fan cards.

Maybe we can make our East-West stadium layout work to our advantage. Kinda nudge those receivers into glare areas.

That sounds like an ESPN2 time slot, which seems kind of crappy. The time itself is nice but I think the game warrants more exposure if it’s indeed on the Duece.

Clemson’s front seven on defense are supposed to be pretty good, so say the prognosticators, and so are we; both teams will have green corners and safeties. If our offensive line is worth a flip, we beat them running away. I think our front seven on defense is going to help our defensive backfield by being so aggressive to the point of disrupting the opposing offense. The linebackers are playing closer to the line and our edge players should be freaks. I hope we beat Clemson bloody.

    • Good post. I agree with all you said. The OL should be the biggest question, for us. That’s why I hate we can’t seem to recruit elite OL, like other positions. And keep the pipeline filled.

But also, we can’t make too many mistakes. You expect some mistakes in a first game. But last year, we made too many and ended up beating ourselves. Generally, we’ve done much better in second games. But we’ve struggled with all kinds of mistakes in the competitive openers.

So to me, this is a priority for Richt, Bobo, Pruitt, and staff. Be oiled and polished up enough that we don’t beat ourselves in this game. And I hope it is one of the priorities for them. Because that is what history teaches us it should be.

I’m glad it’s not kicking off earlier in the afternoon. The later the better at home (and the earlier the better on the road). Not to mention the fact that the 2nd half of this game will be cooler than it would have been if it were at 1pm (or even 3:30).

Well you know, someone with some insight commented above that we oughta use the low sun in the second half to our advantage. I think that guy is on to something.

Remember all you tailgaters, eat a lot and drink no booze until just before gametime, otherwise you may be drunk by gametime.

Anyone want to bet whether the # of drunks will increase by that time in the afternoon? You expect me to be tailgating since early in the AM (arriving early to get a good spot) and to drink moderately all day? I’ll try to be there with a sign that says “Nondrinkers party here until 4:00”. Bring your cookies, one-hitters and an empty beer can to fake the Mounties out. The empty serves also as a handy trash can for roaches (in case you don’t eat’em). I’ll be the guy smokin’ the blunt cigar and the same empty beer can all day.

I’ll be around to answer the non-“Smoke’em if you got’em” crowd’s questions. Closet smokers feel free to chime in. Drunks too.

I knew we would not get the primetime slot again this season so this is the best time we could have gotten. Hate that it isn’t a true night game, but better than earlier. I think our fans will be stoked but we clearly got the wrong end of the draw after the edge Clemson had last August. Another reason we should consider Thursday nights for openers before school begins, we are conceding SC a lot of exposure (and usually a big advantage in rest before our game.) This is a good example of how we come up short year after year because of our stubbornness to realize we could use the help in both recruiting and brand building. Have to maximize opportunities whenever you can.

    • Mac, classes start in the middle of August. I can’t imagine a worse situation for a Georgia home game than a Thursday night. Classes, work, everything would have to be cancelled. USCe or any school that doesn’t have an on campus stadium could pull that off. A 92,000 seat stadium literally in the middle of campus with no parking can’t make that happen.

Then that is my bad. I have said repeatedly that I am opposed to Thursday night home games when students are on campus, and for the same reasons you stated, it would be a nightmare. (How the hell did Clemson pull that off? I can see why it wouldn’t be a problem for someone like Tech.) I remain in favor of doing it on road games and at neutral sites.

“I remain in favor of doing it on road games and neutral sites.” Yeah, as long as the neutral site is when the game is for the OTHER team’s home game or a true one-shot game. Let’s not give away a Sanford game home slot over something like this.

Pretty much agree Mayor, although I wouldn’t rule out one of the big neutral site games at Jerry’s house while dropping a cupcake as an opening game. Cupcake games are expendable, regardless of where they are played. CFB schedules need serious upgrading. I wouldn’t go to Sanford to see us play Ga State or Idaho in September if you sent a limo and 10 free tickets on the 50 yard line.
