First thoughts on Georgia-South Carolina

Mark Richt was impressed with what Texas A&M did to South Carolina’s defense, but doesn’t see it as an offensive template for Georgia this Saturday.

“We’re not going to try to look at Texas A&M’s game plan and mimic it. There are some things we may be able to use, but we don’t have the stable of receivers they have and we have these running backs that we need to get the ball in their hands.”

Mike Bobo, however, sounds more open-minded about what he might take from TAMU’s success.

“You’ll see us do that some,” Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo said. “You’ll see us in three-receiver sets. You probably won’t see us in four-receiver sets or five like we might’ve done a couple of years earlier just because of depth at receiver. There will probably always be a tight end on the field. But we’ll try to give them multiple looks and see how they line up.”

In truth, they both sound like they’re getting to the same place.  And why not?  As Bill Connelly points out in his game preview, South Carolina’s pass defense has been noticeably weaker than its run defense this season.  The question is whether Mike Bobo and Hutson Mason can take advantage of that.  Bill thinks that Georgia will have to open things up down the field more than the Dawgs did against Clemson.

The last time these teams played, Georgia won because of the passing game. Gurley averaged just 4.4 yards per carry, but Aaron Murray completed 17 of 23 passes at 18.2 yards per completion. He found Justin Scott-Wesley for a game-changing 85-yard score. He found Michael Bennett for a 32-yarder. Keith Marshall had a 48-yard catch-and-run. Hutson Mason averaged seven yards per completion against Clemson, but only six of Murray’s 17 completions last year gained seven or fewer yards.

I’m not quite so convinced of that.  Will Georgia need to throw more than it did against Clemson?  Most likely.  But TAMU ripped the ‘Cock defense with short and medium range targeted throws that took advantage of sloppy fundamentals.  SC hasn’t shown that it plays well in space or tackles well (or at least not until the fourth quarter against ECU).  If Mason and his receivers are on the same page, there’s no reason to think they can’t have success in the passing game without having to go bombs away.

As far as the running game goes, Todd Gurley’s right about one thing.  With the way South Carolina deploys its safeties, if a Georgia running back manages to break through the first level, there’s room to roam.  If that means pounding away until the opportunity presents itself, I don’t think Georgia would have a problem with that, at least as long as the scoring is under control.  If South Carolina can open up a lead, that may change Bobo’s strategy.

Which brings us to the other side of the ball.  Can Georgia slow Mike Davis down?  If so, we saw what happened against Clemson when Pruitt forced an offense into one dimension.  Whereas Carolina’s defense has been generous on third downs, Bill points out that Dylan Thompson isn’t nearly as good when he’s forced into passing downs.  Bill describes what the Gamecocks need to do:

With Davis’ skill and Georgia’s secondary issues, South Carolina should have the advantage on first down, second-and-short or medium, and third-and-short. Keep it in that range.

From here, it looks like the biggest key to the game may be Georgia’s pass rush.  Keeping Thompson off-balance would be big.  Mike Davis is a terrific back, but he’s not gonna beat the Dawgs by himself.

Hope those aren’t famous last words. Still can’t get the Lattimore game out of my thoughts. I can see spurrier pounding Davis for 35+ carries. It scares the shit out of me.

Lattimore was important, but he didn’t beat Georgia by himself. Their defense was most responsible for that win.

Juan, Lattimore was famous for his off-field conditioning. He was a weight-room warrior. Davis is more of a training-table warrior, as he looks to have taken advantage of the free hotels and room service in Columbia.

Lattimore was special. Best back in the SEC in his heyday. Davis is not that. He’s very good, bu I think if they run him 30+ times the ball pops out a few times.

But Bill’s right. Getting them in 3 and 7+ changes things incredibly. The killer in that first half vs. Clemson is that they had 2nd and 4-5 the entire half. Hard to stop any decent team for 5 yards in 2 downs.

+1. And if we continue to substitute/rotate liberally along the line, we should be able to stay fresh in the box as Davis gets gassed.

Ultimately I agree with the Senator — pass rush is our defensive key. Davis isn’t going to beat us, but our secondary could….

  2. South Carolina has not had success against the run the other teams just didn’t feel the need to run it. They are dead last in the SEC at yards per carry allowed. Combine that with how awful they have been at giving up passes in the 10 to 20 yard range (23 such passes against A&M) and we should be able to give them a good mix. Basically to me the game falls on two things: 1)Can our OL play the way they did against Clemson on the road and 2) do our guys protect the ball.

This. They have not faced a team with our ability or inclination to run the ball. I think we line up and run over them.

What in hell prevents us from playing the same game against SC as we worried ourselves over with Clemson? We still have to go and play the game without reinventing the nightmares that play right into Spurrier’s visor.

Once more with a useful stat: SC’s D has allowed 0ver 71% completion against it. That pretty much coincides with what Hutson ‘s completion rate is. Our pass D allows in the mid 50% while their QBs throw at about the same rate of completion. That is over a 15% differential for point production. What is there not to like?

Crap! Let’s get this show on the road.

They’re playing like a team that has new starters in the secondary, and lost 3 starters on the DLine (which for lack of depth reasons, is trying to move to a 3-4). The catch is their linebackers were only average last year, and that was playing behind Clowney and Co.

Keep in mind that the SC run game is not the same animal anymore without Shaw. It will take a significant amount of pressure off the d not having to account for Shaw on the keeper. Thompson will get a few yards in spots but is not half the ball carrier Shaw was.

I expect Davis to have a good but not great day. 90-110 yds.

I haven’t been as happy to see an opposing QB leave as I am to see Shaw gone; he was a great guy for them and, if he wasn’t Carolina’s QB carving up our guys, I’m sure I’d have loved to watch him each week because of his skills and his toughness. Good luck at the next level.

That said, I’ll be happy with any kind of win this weekend, but it would be especially sweet to beat them by a few scores; it’s been too long since we’ve put a real beating on them.

Let me preface this by saying I think Mike Bobo is one of the top 3 offensive coordiinators in the country-if not the best. I always liked his blue collar grit as a player also. It just seems to me that whenever we play USC he tries to outcoach Spurrier and changes what he does well. It may just be paranoia on my part but it seems we do weird shit at weird times on offense. I believe in taking what the defense gives you but with the stable of backs he has at his disposal Bobo should be able to force the issue and dictate what he wants to do.

    • Last year, there was no trying to outcoach Spurrier. He did outcoach Spurrier. Our offense looked so much better than the USCe offense from QB play, line play, and skill guys. We were more athletic and better coached. There’s a reason the USCe assistants got in a fight on the sidelines last year.

You are spot on. Just about every button Bobo pushed last year against USC worked.I remember one pass play down the left side JSW? late in the game that looked like the USC DB was chained down.

        • That was a broken play where Murray bought time by running around Clowney and hitting JSW on the run, but yes, Bobo pressed all of the right buttons. It helps your play-calling when the offensive line just whips the guy in front of them for 60 minutes like our guys did last year.

  6. My two biggest fears going into the season were our o-line and the secondary. After the Clemson game, I feel better about the o-line, but our youth in the secondary still scares me a lot, particularly going into that environment at Williams-Brice. That’s what keeps me from being confident going into this game, though I do think we have a much better team.

This year’s secondary doesn’t hang it’s head coming off the field and their little legs go as fast as a butterchurner on meth when they are on the field. They have learned to tackle in open space and how to knock the ball out of receiver’s hands more often. Woe be unto the receiver who thinks he will win most of his matches with these fun and upbeat guys who like giving hard licks and separating the ball from opponent’s hands.

Yep. When the taller guy gets an advantage and our secondary backs are face-guarding, it’s the best bet on the field for us. I don’t want to hear any hypercritical bellyachin’ about our guys playing as they are taught on the field. If they don’t let them get wide open behind them, the rest of the action constitutes good focus and athleticism to stay with them.

      Sic’em Dawgs!

Anybody know where he’ll be Saturday? I would think that Vegas would have a vested interest in knowing this.

Good question. If I see him on the ole television set calling out that first penalty, my blood pressure and nerves are definitely gonna skyrocket. But you never know with refs these days, I still can’t believe that other crew overturned that Bennett catch and called it a fumble a couple weeks ago. We just have to be beating a team bad enough to be able to overcome any and all BS calls by the refs. We gotta put the hammer down and throttle ’em for 60 minutes!

Pressure on Thompson will bring about a reward with turnovers, he gets jittery when hurried but can be effective to Roland when allowed time. If we take away his confidence, I don’t think Davis can beat us both because of his conditioning, and us being able to make them one dimensional. Steele’s computer projects SC with only 130 yards rushing….hope it is right. And Steele has UGA as a “best bet” again on his projection with 10-12 point win.

One thing not being discussed is weather. While I would prefer it clear and warm because I think it favors us due to depth and conditioning, the 50% chance of off and on rain would diminish the effect of the crowd. Torn on this, but think we win either way; my biggest concern remains the communication for our offense when the natives are riled up so maybe rain before to keep some of the fair weather folks home on the sofa. Still picking UGA by 10+ but I am not greedy, any W will do. Just 1-0 every week.

Have you noticed one thing this week. The talk from Bobo and CMR.
But notice who is not talking…Coach Pruitt. Thanks Coach, there is a coach and adult in the room.
Stretch the field. Can the current receivers do that on the road. That is the test. Like I have said in other posts re A&M and like CMR said, we do not have the receivers they do. Physically A&M’s outmatched Carolina’s secondary. Two teams that will have success throwing the ball this year will be A&M, and the other will be Florida because of Driskell.
Will Carolina play the gaps to stop the running game. Yes. Look at how VaTech’s Bud Black employed a bear front and LBs. Ward is under pressure after A&M. Carolina worked on the Dawgs after the A&M game. How much time due you think they devoted last week and this in preparation. ECU was an open date for them too. Ward’s defense, even last year, had some numbers hung on them.
Spurrier wants to come out week, hang up 10-14, let the crowd in, and roll, take some shots. The offense of CMR and Bobo had better show up.
Perhaps that is why Pruitt is not talking much…he is not sure about the Dawgs offense against Ward.

  10. ECU went 6/12 on third downs and only had the ball for 23:41, yet still put up 450 yards, 23 points and drove the ball into scoring position 7 out of their 10 drives. If not for piss poor redzone work, they put up 30+. They also rushed for 132 yards on 21 carries. Take out the 44-yd run ECU had, and that’s still more than 4 YPC against ECU.

The game being in Columbia is the only reason UGA fans are worried, and rightfully so after what’s happened there in the past. But this is not the same Carolina team from the previous two years. Clowney, Quarles, Surratt, Hampton…all gone. Shaw and Ellington…all gone. They’re down a good RG and have had to move guys within the OL, what was supposed to be a strength, making it suspect. UGA has no business losing this game. At all.

He is correct. Their receivers, QB and D are diminished from last year when we beat’em. They still will get on the field and play a hard (if not frenetic), game not to lose. That doesn’t diminish any weapons we have; it just means they will rise to the occasion, especially in the first half. We will take it after that.

This is the attitude that leads to your quarterback’s house getting egged after the game.

Georgia is not that much better than SC. You beat a Clemson team at home that lost its starting QB and top two wide receivers to the draft among other suspensions and injuries. This is the same Clemson team we have beat for 5 straight years by double digits. Our D looked really bad against a very good A&M offense and we beat a good ECU team by the margin we always do.

SC and UGA have recruited the same caliber of players from the same states for the past 5 years +. Your team has question marks on D just like ours (SC has burned the secondary for a couple years now). We have as good of an offensive line and a very good running game when Davis is healthy. I think our QB is better and our WR’s are better. The D is better suited to playing UGA than A&M.

Looking forward to a fun game.

IF you don’t think losing Clowney and Shaw hurts your team..you obviously missed the T A&M game. Clowney was a once in a generation player. He will be greatly missed.

Other than that, I appreciate the friendly banter about our teams. Frankly, I see Carolina as an 8-5 kind of team this year. As long as injuries don’t bite ya’ll in the arse like it did us last year…

Our biggest weakness on defense is pass rush. So far no one has shown they can get consistent pressure. It was a little bit better against ECU but that was ECU. We will be able to keep Gurley in some form of check. He may run for over 100 yards but he sure wont run for 200 on 15 carries.

I think the loss of Aaron Murray is as big of a loss for Georgia as Clowney is for SC. He was the difference maker in our game last year and has been a consistent (maybe unappreciated) player for 3-4 years. Our offense will continue to put up points without Dylan.

Questions yes. But do not expect the same thing you saw the last few years. Were these 2 of the 26 games over the last 2 years where teams exploited our ILBs trying and failing in pass coverage over and over…and over and over…? God willing, that well for opposing offenses has all but dried up. Also…I wouldn’t count on the Benny Hill pre-snap Grantham scramble appearing Saturday either.

Sides, your bigger loss was Shaw, not Clowney. Both were the best ever at their positions at SC but you could game plan around Clowney, there was no dodging Shaw’s impact as a passer, more so as a runner, and even more so as a leader. Murray’s loss is substantial, no question, but I don’t think any SEC team suffered a bigger fall off at QB than SC.

Cautiously confident is the right way to describe what I have seen from the Dawg Nation as fans or the team/staff. I wouldn’t mistake that for cocky, or underestimating the task on Saturday. I don’t think I would give a single position matchup advantage to SC, although there could be a slight edge at OL, and a couple are close to equal. The only edge I see that favors SC is the home field, and that is substantial enough with our young players to make us all concerned. On a neutral field or at Sanford, I would expect a 14-17 point UGA win or I would say you played the game better than we did. Anything can happen in a 4 hour window on any given Saturday but unless we get really careless with the ball I think UGA wins by 10+. It would not shock me, or cause me to go into cardiac arrest if you guys pull the upset….unless you did it “Auburn style”, I can’t take another one like that! Here’s to no major injuries to either team.
