Sometimes it sounds like he writes his own pornography.
But in the bigger picture: Yes, the outcome mattered. It made Tech fans feel good about their coach again, and that’s no small thing. It made Georgia fans wonder, not for the first time, if their coach really is overmatched in a tactical way, and I know, given Richt’s two SEC titles, how silly that might sound. But there it is.
Bradley contrasts Johnson getting a four-year contract extension with Richt having to face Louisville in a bowl game (“the booby prize of postseason assignments”). He then goes on to note, “A consistently good team that competes for the ACC title and upsets Georgia once every four or five years is about all Tech folks expect.” My, how convenient to ignore who was favored in ’09 and ’10. Or what happens in the final rankings this season if Georgia wins that bowl game and Tech loses in Miami.
So Johnson gets to work his magic for another four years with that extension. Maybe if he goes 1-3 at just the right time, he can get another one. What’s the old line about the soft bigotry of low expectations? Regardless of what you think of Richt’s fate at Georgia, there’s no way a coach in Athens survives on just an occasional upset win over the Jackets. Just ask Jim Donnan.
i salute those that have the patience to click on anything written by mark bradley. i couldn’t read his bullshit even before the innerwebs made trolling such a prized attribute. he was a troll’s troll in the 90’s.
jeff schultz was a great beat writer for the thrashers – i really mean that. but he gave it up – whatever the reason – to join bradley in lazy troll land.

Totally agree. Schultz seems to be passing time. Bradley’s never been someone you’d ever read for insight.

“The soft bigotry of low expectations” is the perfect summary of Tech’s relationship to any coach who can beat Georgia occasionally.
I will point out that we were favored by a decent amount (I think around 10 points) in the 2010 version of COFH.

Beaumont its really not even beat Georgia occasionally…it is more like once in a while…or once a decade?
The soft bigotry of low thought is more apt.

“Damning with faint praise” is even more apt. Whether intentionally or unintentionally.

Maybe I’m missing something, but I don’t get the hate for this particular column. As I read it, this is a straightforward take on the two fanbases’ expectations. The passage quoted here seems to specifically address the soft bigotry of Tech fans’ low expectations.

“Soft bigotry of low expectations” must apply to the editor of the AJC Sports pages also.

EDSBS had a great line about Paul Johnson running for senator because he only needs one win every six years to keep his job.

Is Bradley really this big of a dumbass? Johnson outmatches Richt tactically? Is that a fact, Mark? Johnson has 2 wins against Georgia, both of which were given to him by turnovers and shitty luck, and he’s the superior tactician? Hey sport, the French won the occasional battle in World War II, that doesn’t make any of the frog generals better.

Wow… So apparently now we’re depending on UGA being ranked ahead of tech in the final rankings to refute Mark Bradley, whose observations about the respective fan-base’s expectations are pretty much spot on.

Did…I was being snippy but that doesn’t mean Bradley isn’t right because the article is way more about fan expectations than anything else. The little extras are just bait for the AJC.com comments section, absolutely nothing new there.

I’m not depending on anything to refute Bradley, man. I’m just pointing out that his narrative conveniently omits a few items.

Tech men don’t know what a “booby” prize is. They probably think it’s Kate Upton’s avatar in the new online war game.

Reading the last paragraph sounds like Richt and Florida.

Bluto, get over the Paul Johnson is a douche bag meme thing. He’s led national championship teams. I’ll pull for Tech any time they ain’t playing GA, and I’ll pull for Ga Southern over Tech just the same. Don’t be so all sold out.

So the Johnson won a “natty” at GSU, so that makes him not a douche? I guess Corch Irvin Meyers isn’t a douche, either.
Nah, they are both insufferable bastards as well as being douches. I have to admit that I pulled for Tech against the rapist from FSU, but that was only the second time in my life. I also pulled for Tech against Iowa State back in the early 70’s when Eddie McShan tried to pull some stunt and got suspended. Wanted to see the backup QB succeed, and they did.
But just to be clear, everything I’ve ever seen out of Paul (the) Johnson tells me he is a joyless douche.

Having grown up in the Savannah area and being in high school around the time Johnson really started to get Southern going with Adrian Peterson, I can tell you his douchebag reputation precedes him. Get out of Statesboro, where he is royalty, and I’ve never met anyone that has any interaction with him that doesn’t think he is a raging douche fire.

My god. I have never, ever, ever, ever wondered if Richt was overmatched “tactically” by PJ.
A gimmicky offense and the disgusting practice of cut blocking is all it is. And once every decade – not every 4-5 years – it pulls off a win. And in this case, it required the utterly stupid move of a squib kick to make it happen.

Bradley is still enamored with Johnson’s move to let Ealey score in the 2010 game. Like it was tactical brilliance to set up Tech’s passing game for the win.

Y’all be nice to Bradley. Tech loves his snake oil.
He tells them they are pretty. Then they tie their hands for years,
awarding long-term contracts to coaches no other big time programs want.
He is an ally.

It seems to me we (Georgia) is one mistake (any one mistake) away from not having this discussion at all. On the other hand we got less than two weeks to get ready for Louisville. Mark Bradley notwithstanding, can we move the fuck on? Ever?
