Against all odds

Today’s half-empty/half-full Georgia moment is brought to you by Bovada, which just posted odds on teams making this season’s college football playoffs.  The envelope, please.

Alabama – 7/4
Auburn – 3/1
Baylor – 4/1
Clemson – 9/2
Florida State – 3/1
Georgia – 4/1
LSU – 11/2
Michigan State – 11/2
Notre Dame – 6/1
Ohio State – 2/5
Oklahoma – 8/1
Oregon – 3/1
TCU – 7/5
UCLA – 6/1
USC – 3/1

Georgia’s on the list, which is good.  But it’s only got the eighth-best odds, which isn’t so good.

Then again, there are three SEC West teams on that sucker, and we know that ain’t happening.

So tell me again who Ohio State plays this year?

  2. 4/1 to make the playoff isn’t bad. No doubt Vegas has high expectations for us.

    • Yep. I think 4 to 1 is actually pretty good. The key is winning the east. Then win the SECCG and the Dawgs are not only SEC Champions but in the playoff, too.

      • Mayor, that’s what I think, too. Take care of the business you can control – win the East – and take your chances in Atlanta and beyond. All of the people who poke fun at CMR when he says our 1st goal is to win the East don’t want to understand that’s the only thing in the team’s control during the regular season.

If we win the SEC championship with 1 loss and our conference schedule + tech, we’re in – no ifs, ands, or buts about it.

Georgia is sort of in a similar situation to FSU at least for the present. FSU is clearly the best team in the ACC and should win that conference every year–and get a ticket to the 4 team playoff. Will the Criminoles do that? Easier said than done but I like their chances. Georgia is clearly the best team in the SEC East and should win that division and go to Atlanta for the SECCG which is a de facto play-in game to the 4 team playoff every year. Will they be able to do that? Easier said than done but I like their chances. All that said, Georgia was the best team in the SEC East the last 2 seasons and still didn’t win the East which demonstrates that even the best team doesn’t always win.

  3. WaIt until the Third Week of the Season…we will be at the top of that list. Yes, the Vegas prognosticators are in an off Season Funk. It will be like 1976 all over again! Do not know if we can shut them out, but we will get revenge for the Black out and the SEC Championship. GATA Junkyard Dawgs! GATA!!! 🏈🎈

They also have Jeremy Johnson and Nick Chubb tied at 10/1 to win the Heisman.

  5. I think UGA makes it. The D will be better, the offense, will be brutal and wear people down in the 4th.

I think they lose no more than 2 of SPUAT, AU, SECCG, and that’s being conservative. There’s no reason to think those games aren’t a push, with Chubb maybe being the difference.

I truly believe UGA is going to see a generational player (a la Walker) this year in Chubb.

  6. Go Dawgs!

Just win the SEC Championship. That ought to be enough to get into the bracket. And if it isn’t, I’ll still be happy. Just get a ring.

      • If we win the SEC championship and do not get in the CFP (I don’t care if it’s with a 10-3 record) something is going to burn. Everyone knows we beat each other up during the regular season and if the SEC Champion is not in the CFP than we need to return to the BCS. My bigger concern is If we lose to Bama at home and than beat someone else in the SEC championship game and Bama backdoors into the playoffs something bigger than a tornado will hit Tuscaloosa..

The problem is the committee system. The committee members know the identities of the teams they are voting into–and out of– the playoff. The BCS was a blind draw–the computer was set up with the criteria in advance and just selected the teams based on numbers. The committee selects based on politics. What happened to TCU is Exhibit “A.”

The thing about Chubb is… he is an absolute beast of a workhorse in the weightroom. Imagine what he’s going to look like out there with another 8 months of hard work in since the last time we’ve seen him

I am amazed at the high expectations for our 2015 Dawgs, maybe I’m under-rating them, but I see 9 wins and merely making the SECCG as a great year for this squad. I fear our passing game is going to be a mess, and we’re going to miss CMB more than people are talking about right now.

    But…GO DAWGS!

    • Cosmic, I have to agree with you. My hope is a trip to Atlanta, but inexperience at QB could keep us from the SECCG.

      02 – experienced starter
      03 – same experienced starter
05 – 1st year starter but a lot experience in games that mattered
      11 – experienced starter
      12 – same experienced starter

I hope I’m wrong, but I would be happy with 10 regular season wins (split with Alabama schools and lose 1 division game).

I’m betting the offensive end-of-game brain cramps were Bobo. I think those stop this season. If so, and CMR doesn’t pooch any more kick-offs, I see a really good year ahead. I think Schotty is going to be an upgrade over Bobo.

        • Mayor, I hope you’re right. I think CBS is going to be fine. You don’t stay in the NFL for 9 years as an assistant without understanding your job and working hard at it. My only question is how is he going to handle working with QBs who are subject to the 20-hour rule as opposed to the NFL.

FSU odds may increase a lot tonight, so don’t play them at 3/1. Although ohio is the beauty queen in this contest, Michigan State looks like the better bet to me. I wouldn’t bet any of the SECW teams but LSU looks pretty attractive and whatever Arky is, since they didn’t make the list, would be another candidate. UGA is a strong pick at winning the East so 4/1 against anyone from the West isn’t a bad play either. I like either Baylor or TCU to get there so Baylor would be my play….the committee isn’t isn’t going to leave them out this season, imo.
