Skunked

For a team that went heavy on youth this season, it’s probably a little disconcerting to find that Georgia has no players on this year’s SEC All-Freshman team.

Given our showing on all of these all-star teams, you’d think this team would have a chance at 10 wins. Why can’t we have a shot at a double digit win season with all of this talent?

I saw another list today, but do not recall who put it out but Thompkins made that list on first team D.

  3. How Trent Thompson isn’t on one of these teams is baffling to me.

    • I think that injury at the end of the year messed up his chances. He played limited snaps his first few games while he was learning, then played limited snaps at the end due to injury. So he neither made an immediate impact nor finished strong.

I’m pretty excited to see what he does next year though!

        Thompson’s measurables…TFL and Sacks…just weren’t there.

What I couldn’t believe when I looked at the stats from this year…how badly the three players who made that team last year regressed. Chubb was an injury…but Blazevich and Lo Carter…how did he have ZERO tackles for a loss this year? He had more targeting penalties than TFLs…I guess all of that ‘he’s in the dog house’ stuff was more than just smoke.

        • Totally agree about Carter. I don’t blame Blaz as much individually because he was victimized by the playcalling and the QB play.

But Carter is hard to explain. I mean at the end of his freshman year, he looked like he was poised to be a superstar.

Hopefully just Sophomore-slump. We will need him to be back to superstar-form next season. Bellamy and Natrez is coming on, so we could have a awesome set of LB’s again..

  4. Go Dawgs!

I don’t anticipate putting anybody on the freshman coordinator team either, if you catch my meaning.

Dawgs are what I call and refer to as an invisible team at the present. They 9-3. Two of those losses were to top 10 teams last week. Not trying to revive CMR. Not sure how to say this, but they and their achievements are going to be overlooked based on how they played at times, the perceived quality of play [the eye test], and the flux of a coaching change.
Frankly I like it. Motivation for next season. Go in as an unknown. Not a quality team. Overlooked by all.
The begin to build as a team from August to December.
All I want now on my Dawg Christmas list is the list of coaches and recruits. The latter will come into focus after the dead time and the newly hired coaches. Word is some of those are going to be announced shortly.
There are some very good players on this squad, just not enough. Plus they played during a season of over expectations and division. Plus there were times when the ball just did not bounce their way. Most invisible part, offense re OC and QB play. But Godwin will be a big factor down the road along with Michel and Chubb. Plugging those guys into an offensive scheme will make the Dawgs more than invisible, but on a 2016 SEC team.

    Terry Godwin? what the?

    • Dude, Kirk and Ridley both more than doubled Godwin’s receiving stats. Not Godwin’s fault we had terrible QB play, but there’s no argument to be made in his favor over those two.

Rev, my untrained eye just did not see the hype surrounding Godwin. He is small in stature, does not have amazing speed, and he had a ton of drops. On the positive side, I do believe that his punt returns in the Mizzou game gave the Dawgs that W. However, McKenzie should field any and all punts for this team so long as he is healthy. All in all, I am not sold of Godwin yet.

        • Hard to argue with any of that, thought I did think he looked better in the last few games. I definitely don’t see him as a future Amari Cooper, but could see him as a better version of Tavarres King, and I’d be ok with that. We need one or two of those big bodies guys for sure though to make him more effective, especially on the screens and so forth.

Exactly. I think he’ll look a lot better when used properly. And no, “blocking outside for a screen to Malcom Mitchel” is not using him properly.

I think it is hard to argue that Godwin had a better year than Ridley or Kirk.

The only freshman that was starting the entire season was Godwin. He did well, but Ridley and Kirk deserve the spot over him.

Who was that freshman Pinter that came in for Barber? He was pretty good other than the one bad fake punt. Bruce Romsey?

  10. I think a lot if it has to do with the fact that we played so many. I mean…we played everyone except the water girl. Guys like Patrick, Thompson, Harris and Godwin all showed that they could be pretty good.

Richt played a lot of freshmen at the beginning and end of his career. Not so much in between.

And Jeremy Pruitt set to be named Alabama DC. Auburn is getting Kelly from FSU. Hmmmmm.

Saw that too and we only have a head coach.

McGarity probably told Smart not to make a hire until someone else hired Pruitt, just to avoid paying a buyout. It will be interesting if our DC hire is announced immediately after Pruitt to Bama is official.

$2.6 million if someone else blinked first on Pruitt. Looks like they may have to eat Schottenheimer’s $1.9 million, however.

Ironically, looks like Pruitt will be working with Kirby after all…at Alabama. ;-(

(For the next few weeks, anyway)

Guys, not trying to hijack thread but wanted to give some perspective on Pruitt in regards to his likely departure from UGA. I interact professionally with individuals affected by his departure and for that reason prefer to remain anonymous.
While there’s no doubt that he’s a great coach and recruiter, his behaviour had become increasingly disruptive during his tenure in Athens. Specifically, the way he treated staffers (even medical) was rude, undeserved, at best uncouth and at worse verbally abusive. His interaction with many other coaches, even before the season started to unravel, was often times less than professional. Richt was the great intercessor on the staff and many times had to, for the lack of a better term, clean up his messes. While Pruitt may be missed in the box scores, there won’t be any tears shed when that chapter closes.

    • Thanks. This makes me feel better from the outside looking in I just an improving defense under a coordinator the players liked. However, I believe Georgia’s medical staff to be the best and if he had a problem with them then I will get over his loss quickly.

So please explain the disconnect – because the players and recruits seem to love the guy. I suppose more details will trickle out. In Pruitt’s defense, he made a huge positive impact on the football program while here. He’s one of the few guys we’ve had come through in a long time who could truly coach, and recruited better than anyone we’ve had in a helluva long time.

I have absolutely no doubt Pruitt will be very successful at his next gig. And I certainly can’t say that about anyone else in our program in recent years. I hope Smart has a good DC lined up.
