I bet you saw the first three words and thought I was going to discuss the Falcons. Okay, I keed, I keed.
Anyway, who the hell really knows what to expect today? Do we get the Nicholls version of Georgia, or the North Carolina one? Is there an accumulated hangover from the losses to Ole Miss and Tennessee? Does Nick Chubb get more than one carry? Does Blankenship get to try an attempt outside the 20-yard line? Do Boom and Roper recreate the magic that carried them to an unexpected, lopsided win at the 2014 Cocktail Party?
And that’s all before you even get to the game being played a day later than anyone expected just a week ago. Or whether the wind might have an impact today.
Advanced stats would suggest Georgia is worth the consideration of being more than a touchdown favorite this afternoon. S&P+ has the Dawgs at 58th and the ‘Cocks at 88th, with the matchups being what you’d expect:
- Georgia offense (60th) vs. South Carolina defense (32nd)
- Georgia defense (41st) vs. South Carolina offense (121st)
As for the other part of the game…
- Georgia special teams: 125th
- South Carolina special teams: 51st
Yecch.
If I have my hopes today, they’re that (1) Eason and the other true freshmen continue to grow; (2) Chaney continues to be open-minded with the offensive game plan; (3) the defense shows that its problems through the first third of the season were due in large part to the quality of the offenses it’s faced; and (4) special teams don’t soil themselves.
I feel okay about the first two, maybe not so much about the third and totally despondent about the fourth, so if you put a gun to my head, I’d say Georgia wins, but doesn’t cover.
Feel free to respond in the comments.
I think we win if we don’t give up non offense touchdowns. This is going to be a battle of two pretty bad teams.

Muschamp needs to be put in a small boat and set adrift in the middle of the sea. What a friggin’ idiot he’s making out of himself. He’s actually made me enjoy JP because JP has had to bail his biased ass out about a dozen times during the game. He just insisted IMac was out of bounds on that TD catch and run. ^This. I thought the SEC instituted this review system by guys in B’ham to take this kind of BS out of the equation. Player intercepts, falls to the ground and while laying on the ground the receiver rips the ball out of his hands–and the refs on site call that a completion? What a crock!! Then the TV ref does nothing!! I get that Kirby doesn’t want to lose a TO which might become very valuable in a tight game but there is NO excuse for the TV refs……

Did we just get *#X%ed ? That was an interception I think. Shouldn’t it have been reviewed?

We’re bad enough as it is. We don’t need the officials to screw us over as much as they have these past couple games. Seemed pretty clear that was an INT. And if it wasn’t, it was an incomplete pass, since the ball hit the ground as he was ripping it out of Mauger’s hands.

I guess Kirby isn’t used to getting screwed by the refs. He needs to find his challenge flag.

The SEC needs to investigate what is going on with the refs about Georgia. This has been going on for YEARS and the TV refs are in on it, too.

Because timeouts are to win the game, not to speculate whether officials will correct themselves. Second half timeouts are coupons for 40 seconds of additional game time. Kirby clearly is from that school of thought.

Godwin messed up. If he goes down at the 5 we’re in victory formation and running out the clock. Turned out ok but not good football. BTW, USC, the real one, had a receiver take a knee on the 11 yesterday rather than score so they could run out the clock against Colorado. That is good game management.

Back away from the ledge. Better teams than this (2000, 2002, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2014) have shit the bed offensively in Columbia. Eason is 18 and is missing a shit ton of reads. Awful day for him. As someone who has been a sunshine pumper for CKS since he was hired, I have to say that he has a long, long way to go before he’s considered a solid SEC coach. Simply too many amateur mistakes and moments in general where it just looks like he’s over his skis.
I really hope he can improve in a hurry; otherwise we’re going to have loaded teams yearly talent wise that manage to disappoint and basically drive all of us batty.
LikeLike
I’ve been rooting hard for Kirby and really expected a lot, maybe too much. I don’t care about the talent differential; we obvious won’t and can’t win them all. But we should look prepared and disciplined. A leader must give the impression that he (or she) is in control. Did we get a hot new head coach or a talented DC? Hope it’s the former.

We just won…in Columbia…with a true freshmen looking like Jonathan Moxon after a night at the titty bar in west Texas. Columbia is a place where we have seen MUCH more talented teams than this one completely shit the bed to undermanned USCe squads. Enjoy the win. Kirby has his bad moments, but I don’t see these as reasons to jump off the bridge.
Ditto what W Cobb Dawg said. Lot of freshmen out there making plays. This team has some young talent and it is going to be a fun ride the next 2-3 years.

The teams the Dawgs lost to in Columbia like that were coached by HCs that were WAAAY better than Boom, though. Boom is our secret weapon. I hope they keep him for many years.

Also, in addition to blowing the interception call, the officials also gave South Carolina a pass interference and a roughing the passer in the red zone, both of which were terrible calls.
LikeLike
And did not call pass interference when the Cocks did it.
LikeLike
I thought the refs were pretty bad both ways. They let pass interference go and let it go and let it go and then call it. Both teams got away with lot of it. The blown interception was really bad, though, and could have cost us the game.
There doesn’t seem to be a solution. I mentioned a few years back that coaches should be able to ban one ref (or crew ) from doing their games for a year. If two different coaches ban the same ref, he get’s a year off. If three ban him, he’s fired for good.
The problem is we’ve been told the auto-review would fix the mistakes..and it hasn’t. It has been used to screw some teams (see review of Dobbs spiking the ball..which was really a flimsy excuse for an ex post facto call on Georgia for not getting a man off the field fast enough), (see the non-interception in today’s game), (see the Tennessee touchdown that the ball was out of bounds at the pylon on), (see the unnecessary flag on Georgia for one guy having his helmet off celebration), and ask yourself where the reviewers were and who the reviewers were. Today? I think they were watching the NFL…
I sure hope they aren’t collecting a pay check for today’s “work”.
LikeLike
Ug, you see these review screw-ups as benign. I see them as something more insidious–fixing games. If you believe, as I do, that the reviewers have an agenda then those screw-ups start looking a lot different.

Eason had a little trouble with the wind, and being a little over-hyped..but the running game more than compensated and I think the only pic he threw was on a tipped ball…Had one TD pass.
There was a weird feel to the whole game..I think a lot of that is because Willie B. stadium is just a weird place..the stupid spaceship landing music, the copy cat towel waving, the copy cat semi-Seminole chant and that stupid bird crowing like it’s got a sandspur stuck in it’s ass…Sunday afternoon, and the aftermath of Matthew all combined for a dreamy, boring feel.

Agreed. I’m satisfied with where we stand right now at 4-2. We were very nearly 5-1 and in control of the East. (On the other hand, we could easily be 2-4.)
But, right now, I just want to see development and improvement this season. And most importantly — a strong signing day in February.
To get where we want to go, Kirby needs to recruit better than Richt did. Richt didn’t recruit as well as many of us think he did, especially considering his roster management (undersigning, low retention, poor development, and so on).

I’ve never heard a commentator be as consistently wrong about what he was seeing as Musberger was today. He either needs new glasses or to be put out to pasture.
Eason missed high most of the day and just never made a correction to his release point.

What? You don’t agree with what he said about Musberger? He was horrible today. He even made Jesse Palmer look good, and that takes some doing. It wasn’t so much that he was a SC fan – okay, yeah, he was – but it was much more that he was just flat wrong on so many calls. He wasn’t just wrong, he was adamantly wrong.
