I wanted someone who knew kind of what it looked like to be at the highest levels of college football. A lot of those things we needed to learn from Kirby. Because we had been operating under one way of operation for 15 years, so there was one perspective on how to approach things. So there was a different perspective coming in on “What do we need to do?” We listened when it made sense, and 99 percent of the time it made sense and we went ahead and helped make it all happen administratively. So the passion, the ability to recruit, the way he treats these student-athletes, the people he surrounds himself with and his attention to detail is outstanding. Those are the things that coming in I knew were important. If you have that solid foundation, then you can build upon that. I knew that the foundation had to be set. I think he did a wonderful job in executing that plan.
Even Bradley can’t pass up the obvious retort.
Still: 8-5.
8-5 and two great comeback wins and two tough last-minute losses. It’s such a game of inches, like everything else is. A yard here or there. What you can’t do is play the could’ve and should’ve game.

I always judge programs by a lot of measurables. Wins and losses are extremely important, but also: Does the coach lose the team? Is the team still hustling? Are they giving their best effort? The body language – all these things come into play.

Kirby said he would be ready after his season was over and we kinda said, ‘yes’.

No. After his agent called, my secretary came over and programmed his name and number into my telephone.

After the painful experience of the buyouts, I couldn’t eat. Then Cavan came in with some lunch and a piece of paper for me to sign. He said Kirby would work on an entry-level salary. So I called Jere and signed my name next to the big red ‘X’. They tell me Miami has the #1 recruiting class, so we kinda think it was best for all involved.
Did you actually read the contract with Ludacris before signing it?
Kinda. After the very very successful 2013 Sanford Stadium concert, we consider ourselves to be very proficient at scheduling entertainment events. After I kinda made the commitment for G-Day, I had a former staffer contact a list of contemporary musical acts my secretary had prepared. We were days away from the event and I couldn’t eat. Then my former staffer came in with some lunch and a piece of paper for me to sign. He said the rapper would work on the very same contract he had for the very very successful 2013 Sanford Stadium concert. So I called Jere and signed my name next to the big red ‘X’.

Winning 50 games in 5 years to 8 & 5 last year…..and he thinks the foundation needs to be set??? …..GOOD, I expect nothing short of 13 wins this year, that should be the mediocre average of 10 (prior).

How does it affect anyone? IF CKS doesn’t produce a championship of some sort in a few years, he’ll be gone. I DGAS if he wins 12 games a year average.

Exactly, winning 10 meaningless games a year is no better than winning 8 games a year. If we aren’t winning the SEC and are getting blown out by every good team we face and crapping the bed in games we should win but still win 10 games a year, I’d rather move on to someone else and see what happens. Under Richt, 10 wins had become the new undefeated at Georgia.

i respectfully disagree that winning 10 is no better than winning 8, Walking to the car after those 2 extra losses is excruciating, Saying that, say, losing to Tech in 2015 would be no different than beating Tech in 2015 is contrary to my attitude,

I hate losing any game in any sport as a fan or participant. I was referring to whether or not a coach should be fired or kept based solely on NUMBER of games won without consideration of anything else. If you win 10, one being a meaningless mid tier bowl game and nothing else of consequence vs. winning 8 including a meaningless lower tier bowl game I really don’t see much of a difference in the grand scheme.
At least Kirby doesn’t have a cult following that will refuse to let him go if he goes four years without winning anything of consequence because he’s “a good man” and “a great ambassador for the university”.

I understand the position that winning championships is a more important measuring stick than number of wins, and I am glad that you are not saying that after losing to Florida in 2015 there was no difference in winning or losing at Auburn or Tech.

Me, I agree 10 wins without championships are not satisfying, but 8 wins is still less satisfying, especially when 2 of the not wins are Vandy and Tech, and 1 of the wins was a hang on for dear life against a truly atrocious Nicholls team.
on the other hand, I did like beating UNC and Auburn. But 10 is still better than 8, even if it isn’t optimal.

I believe I read that we have never…ever lost to UF, Vandy, TN and GT all in the same season. If true, I would think that that is tough to do.

I think I get it. The same mentality as…It matters not if you come in fifth place or 15th, either way you lose the race. I’m thinking we are all ready for championships…of some sort. We can start with the East at least.

He will only be gone if McGoofey is gone too. If the President likes the contribution to the reserve fund then we will get 5+ years of the Smart era. Remember wins and loses only count if you are other SEC teams we at UGA only care about the money.

The “your hero is at Miami”, part. Presumptuous aren’t we??? You seem to have an issue with me wanting the current coach to be better than the previous one. So far, he ain’t….and I have no confidence he ever will be. This is more about McGarity than who the current coach is, if he does not win…hopefully, he will be gone…the both of them. All I want is an improvement, don’t take it personal because of that. AGAIN…..I DGAS who the coach is, relax…don’t let it bother you.

That makes more sense to me. If he doesn’t win anything in four years I think he will be gone and so will McGarity, at least I hope so. I’ve said if he doesn’t win the East this season the donating and ticket buying fans will start bailing on the whole program. There are some hairline cracks already appearing in the unsold season tickets and the unsold away game tickets at some of our biggest rivalry games. I think the good will tank in Athens is about empty. Raising donations and ticket prices is sticking in the craw of more than a few ticket holders, especially considering the product on the field last season and the abysmal showing of our other sports teams.
I hope Kirby takes us to that next level in the next few years, I’ll be there cheering him on the whole way. However; if he doesn’t, I don’t think we will have to suffer through a decade of Groundhog Day mediocrity before a change is made.

I think McGarity’s contract runs out in ’19. If I were a betting man, I believe that is when he is gone. I can’t see 3 more seasons from the current staff of 8 wins (no confidence-show me), something is gonna have to give. Hopefully it will, “I’m pulling for the new guy”……

FIFY I don’t see any hatred for Kirby, zero, from those of who continue to respect the job Coach Richt did for UGA, the way he represented us, the way he left us, and appreciate the way he raised the level of UGA football while here. Some built up so much hate they still hate him even when he isn’t in Athens, hope he fails elsewhere (which makes no sense at all), and cannot help interjecting cheap shots even when he isn’t the discussion. Despite your myopic viewpoint of CMR, along with Erk he is the most beloved coach we have to our fan base. Move on, it is tiring and trite.

So why does the “CMR” talk bother you??? It is obvious that it does, telling me that my “hero is in Miami” & being adversarial with other post. I for one appreciate what Richt did for Georgia, he is one of the best…if not the best Georgia has ever had. Also, the last I looked…he is one of the top 5 wininest coaches (active).
I also appreciate what Dooley did and will say that from time to time. Smart has some big shoes to fill…I would think any Georgia fan wants him to succeed. There are some that just do not have confidence just yet, that does not mean that they are anti-Smart. I hope he gives us reason to be more confident…prove it on the field. So far, he has not.
Again, don’t take any of this personal. McGarity took a big chance in firing Richt….it is more about him for me. If I had to guess, we all are pulling for Smart (Georgia fans)…not for Richt as you seem to think.

What a stupid comments by the J. Reid Parker Director of Athletics. I am not relitigating the decision to fire Richt. I do note that his reason, “Does the coach lose the team? Is the team still hustling? Are they giving their best effort? The body language – all these things come into play…” contradicts the firing. There is no denying that the team played hard at Auburn and at Tech. If he had said that his reason for firing Richt was that he did not think Richt would ever win a championship, then okay, but citing as a reason a criteria that Richt did meet was stupid.

Maybe McGarity meant Richt had lost control of the team, like when head to have security come in and run interference with the players after the firing… How he remains employed after making these assinine statements (for the umpteenth time) is proof positive all the powers that be care about is that the money keep rolling in…

All I know is Georgia football hasn’t been fun for the last several years. Close wins against teams you should put away early. Last minute losses to teams you should beat. Agonizing. I know fun isn’t on ADGM’s list but it ought to be.
