Gah.
He made national news as Georgia’s defense coordinator in 2010 by flashing the “choke” sign to Florida punter/makeshift kicker Chas Henry before Henry nailed a 37-yard field goal to win in overtime.
Grantham laughs off that incident — and quickly points out that he won his next three against the Gators…
“He” won ’em, eh?
Aaron Murray should have sued Grantham for non-support during the 2013 season.
I hate to defend Towel Boy, but the defense played like their collective hair was on fire in those 3 games we won.

Neither Jeremy Pruitt nor Mel Tucker has gotten his players to play to that level on the banks of the St. John’s River.

Aaron Murray might be my all-time favorite Dawg, but the 3 INTs he threw in the first half of the 2012 UGA/UF game weren’t his best showing. That 2nd half TD throw to Malcolm Mitchell though, that was awesome.

That score was all about Mitchell’s athleticism and execution. UF had bottled him up all day, but the way he exploded downfield after the juke resulted in the UF secondary taking bad angles. I think my favorite thing about that play is how excited Malcolm Mitchell was after the touchdown. He knew it was huge.

And, while it hurts to defend someone as obnoxious as Grantham, it is more likely he said “But we won the next three,” and the writer inserted the first person singular. For all his faults, Grantham’s NFL experience conditioned him against claiming he personally did anything. NFL coaches don’t talk like that because their players would eat them alive (with an actual fork) over it.

I hope Eason lights up Grantham’s defense like a Christmas tree in a couple of months.

One thing the article got wrong, it’s not “Choke Sign Grantham”, it’s “Show Me The Money Grantham”.

Complaint all you want about Grantham, and there’s plenty to complain about, but that dude turned our defense around.

And then turned it back around

They played to their potential in 2011. The other 3 years? Meh.
I went back to every game between 2010 and 2014. Ranked opponents had their way with his defenses. They gave up on average 30 points and 399 yards per game. In the 12 losses against ranked teams, they abused his defenses to the tune of 33 points and 415 yards per game. Out of the 17 games against ranked opponents, his defense allowed fewer than 30 points only 7 times. He made his money against unranked opponents especially in SEC games against lesser opponents where his defenses yielded on average 17 points and 303 yards per game.
Bottom line about Grantham is that his defenses typically handled teams that had inferior talent. His defense generally were vulnerable to teams with equal or better talent.
Was he better than Two Thumbs Martinez? Yes. That’s like being a prettier pig … you’re still a pig.

By the way, the scoring numbers back out defensive and special teams scores.

No arguing with any of that. Although it was D that won 3 in a row against Florida, and to that I tip my cap. I give him a D- for scheme, A+ for getting the players to go all out for him. If he would just simplify the scheme a little it would be great. It really was aggressive and excelled at putting the best players in position to ball out. But he won’t simplify it. It was very satisfying not only to beat him when he was at Louisville, but to beat him and watch the players wave their arms around not knowing where they were supposed to be.

Totally fair. He was an upgrade for CMR at a time when he needed a different look at d-coordinator. The scheme grade is the reason he never could figure how to compete with offenses with equal or better talent. The guy was absolutely clueless when it came to defending the zone read with a mobile QB.
Those 3 Florida games and the 11-12 Auburn games were great to watch his defenses.

As I recall by the time Grantham figured out college QBs could run he was off to Louisville.

Dude, Murray played like ass against Florida. He threw the same amount of interceptions as he did touchdowns in Jacksonville over his 4 years, and only completed over 50% of his passes once (2013). Grantham sucked as a coordinator, but the 6 forced turnovers and 266 total yards allowed in 2012 was perhaps the best defensive performance I’ve seen out of the dawgs… maybe ever.

Chuck Oliver totally ripped off this post today. I’m pretty sure he comes to this blog for “inspiration” fairly regularly.

Jarvis Jones says ‘Hi’. As does Todd Gurley.

I really can’t figure out how Jarvis hasn’t been a success in the NFL. Think he actually got kinda screwed by going to Pittsburgh where the scheme has always been considered almost overly complicated. Especially when Lebeau was there.

CTG might be the only coach we’ve had in a few decades that didn’t piss his pants in Jax. The guy has his faults, but beating FU ain’t one of em.

True. I don’t want him back but I do note that our “Big Four” opponents are UF, UT, Auburn and Tech and we were a combined 13-3 against those four during his seasons at UGA.
