Making the world safe for coachspeak, one step at a time

I know you’ll be as relieved as I am to learn that another trite marketing expression is being preserved for the greater benefit of mankind.

Since the beginning of his tenure at South Carolina, head football coach Will Muschamp has used the phrase “Spurs Up” to signal new prospect commitments or as a general rallying cry for the fan base.

Muschamp has credited his wife, Carol, with thinking of the phrase. Since then, “Spurs Up” has been an integral part of the lexicon for USC fans on social media . Muschamp’s Gamecock Club speaking engagements were branded as the “Spurs Up Tour” and the football staff’s most significant recruiting events are labeled as “Spurs Up Day”.

Now, the university will look to protect the brand further with a trademark of the phrase. USC first filed for a trademark through the United States Patent and Trademark Office in March of 2016.

“Once Coach Muschamp started using it in earnest, we wanted to start to protect it,” said Eric Nichols, who is the Senior Associate Athletics Director for Marketing & Branding/CMO at USC.

Man, that’s a relief.  What a load off my mind…

Somebody help me, what the hell do spurs have to do with gamecocks? Isn’t that more of a cowboy, horseback rider thing?

      Google “chicken spurs”

This is awesome. Delta state still beats them for least threatening mascot but not by much. 😎

To be fair, in cockfighting, they will strap razor sharp spurs to the gamecocks. That’s what makes the sport so brutal.

Google “cockfighting spurs” to get a more accurate visual.

Point taken, Hassan, but there ain’t nothing fair about cockfighting. Fighting chickens for sport is about the same level of depravity as fighting dogs as far as I’m concerned and that puts it in the same general category as pedophelia.

Well, bear in mind friends what bulldogs were originally bred for.

That thought crossed my mind as I typed the post, Hog, but I think it may be apples and oranges. As my handle indicates, I share my truck seat with a working Heeler. It may appear cruel at times when she plies her trade. To pit her against another dog just for funsies? Can’t fathom it. Don’t understand what is in people that would.

Different breeds are breed for different things. It’s what they do or who they are . We’ve always had Terriers of some sort. But I doubt I’d ever encourage it to do something that put her In Harm’s Way.

For taking down cattle by the nose?

My point exactly. To take down a bull by the nose. Handy skill in agriculture at times. Not to fight one of your own species to the death for the entertainment of others.

Apologies for being preachy. Big dog fan.

            ?
Blue Heelers were bred for herding. Cattle drives in Australia. Catch dogs are what you’re thinking of. Twice as heavy and much more powerful than a cattle dog.
Staffordshire Terrier or similar breed. You’re not likely to find a Staffy on a cattle drive. It’s just not bred run all day.

If the chicken goes “spurs up”, isn’t it dead?

The chicken that flys the highest usually wins because it’s spurs can slash the others neck. I’m surprised Will didn’t trademark it on his own like Pat Riley.

“Anchor Down” and “Cocks Up”. Won’t be complete until someone comes up with references to left and right. Or, is that too political?

Meh, I remember “Cock and Fire” and the “Fire Ant Defense”. Give it a year and no one will remember the latest chicken slogan.

How did the copyright of “Johnny Football” work out as far as a money maker go?
