Wednesday morning buffet

  • Has Smart had a change of heart about Georgia’s running game?  Count me in the I’ll-believe-it-when-I-see-it camp.
  • One thing I don’t get about 2017 win projections is why there’s a general assumption about how the Georgia-Auburn game is going to play out.  After all, “Auburn hasn’t hit over 8.5 wins since going 12-2 in 2013 and has only done so three times since 2007. Georgia, on the other hand, has gone over 8.5 wins four times since 2011, including a 12-2 mark in 2012 and back-to-back years of 10-3 in 2014 and 2015.”
  • Screw signing days, says Bob Bowlsby, who likes the idea of signing periods.
  • Speaking of Bowlsby, is there a dumber idea in college football than a championship game for a conference that plays a round-robin schedule?  It will serve the Big 12 right if that game screws it out of a playoff spot.
  • Seth Emerson asks a good question about Georgia’s defense.  The timing sure would be nice.
  • And here’s another good question, in this case, about Title IX in the context of colleges paying athletes.  It’s about time somebody asked.
  • Way to go, Tom Herman.

    I think our defense will be the key for us this year, and I think it will be a strong defense. Much better than last year, and that opens up lots of possibilities. I just hope Chaney is creative enough to take advantage of them. No more running into a brick wall over and over and over. This is only “Over and Over” I like.

    Oh, and good on Herman and Sumlin for calling for the Texas-Texas A&M rivalry to be restarted. Maybe all the pettiness is over.

      Agree with both you and Jared on this, the defense is good enough to make our offense look much better. I recognize the questions about Chaney/Eason/OL and even if they aren’t much improved, UGA will win more games. I also factor in improved STs and that puts me in the optimistic category. If we are wrong about the defense, it will be a struggle like last year,

    13th data point for the Committee to consider makes the championship game a good idea. That doesn’t seem to bother ND, and given the love the Irish have enjoyed for almost 100 years, it shouldn’t concern them. The game is another good football match-up for fans to enjoy, I like them having a title game.

    I think the big issue here is winning the games against the East..honestly, the Auburn game is the last thing in my mind. UGA has never swept the teams in the East. Consider that if you go back to 2012 when Mizzou joined the conference…any of those years, if UGA had gone 6-0 vs. the East and 0-2 against the West, they would have made the SEC Championship game. It’s not Auburn or Bama that has kept us from Atlanta. It is Mizzou, Florida, Tennessee, Vandy, and Carolina. Starting with the game against Tennessee, UGA plays 5 straight East opponents. That’s the make or break stretch of the season. Go 5-0 in those games and you set up a banner year.

      ^^This is an excellent observation Irv. Last year UGA lost to UT, FU and Vandy, and barely got past Mizzou and Kentucky. That doesn’t give me much comfort for the coming season.

        Best I can tell, every season is different. I think if our OL is halfway decent, we have a shot at a very good year.

    The defense last year was the worst UGA red zone defense I’ve seen in my 70 years. It was so bad that the assumption was once a team got inside our 20 they would score and not just field goals but TD’s. I got where I treated our 20 as the goal line. I don’t think it was all the player’s fault either. They looked like they were forever in the wrong formation and confused. When you let teams run up your gut inside the 20 for a TD the coaching sucks. The opponent did not have to trick us they just ran it in. If this is not better then we’re toast.
