If Todd Grantham were coaching Georgia’s 2018 defense, I’d be a lot more worried about this comparison.

    I’m not worried about the offense. One thing Kirby definitely learned in T-town was how to absorb defensive player losses because it happened every year. We may not have a top 5-10 defense this year, but the offense should more than make up for it. If this defense finishes in the top 4 in the league and the offense is as good as many say it will be, I have no doubt we’ll be in Atlanta in December for a virtual national quarterfinal.

    The best first aid for thin numbers on the defensive line is an offense that doesn’t let the other team hold the ball very much. The Senator has put up another discussion header this morning about how Boom is installing a hyper HUNH offense, which is (of course) designed to wear defenses down.
    I’ll take an offense that slowly road grades a defense down, eating clock while the other team’s offense sits on the bench with ants in their pants.
    Boom’s HUNH offense will have the opposite effect of it’s intent against UGA. It is his defense that will be worn out because HUNH only wears down defenses on teams with weak to mediocre offenses. Against a team with a great offense, it backfires.
    Georgia’s running backs are going to get a LOT of yards in the second half of games.

      I think Boom is going to try to be Oklahoma on offense. Oklahoma’s offense was amazing to watch, but look how their defense folded in the second half of the Rose Bowl. I still love JF’s block on the corner to get Sony to the endzone on the winning score..although I don’t think that kid had any intention of trying to stop that freight train. He was only happy to let Fromme block him out of the play.

        Yeah, I did not notice at the time, but after watching replays a zillion times (that game will NEVER get old), the OK player was right up there with Tray Matthews vs Leonard Fournette for inclusion in the “Most Pathetic Attempt at Making a Play” hall of shame.

        As the mouse puts it–“Come on, Man!”

      If your defense sucks when they’re fresh, who cares?

      It’ll be interesting to see. It wouldn’t shock me to see Boom pull out all the stops to try to beat us in week 2. He knows we’re gonna score and he knows we’re young on defense and thin in the front 7. They’ve gotta figure out a way of scoring points and hope that because it’s early in the season, home crowd, lots of enthusiasm that they can somehow shock us.

      I’m happy to watch Boom scramble for answers. I wasn’t happy to see CKS do that onside kick last year.

        Yeah, there was maybe one or two good things about that onside kick. One thing is it showed the world he would do something like that. Another thing is he had to see how dumb it was an grow from it. A wise old coach once told me that when a team runs trick plays, esp. early in a game, they’re as much as admitting that they don’t think they can beat you straight up. On the other hand, the first shot we took against Mississippi State was pretty cool.

        I don’t think we are thin in the front 7 I just think there is a lot of inexperience. Our starting 2+ depth at DL is fine and experienced. It is replacing all of those linebackers that concerns me. Natrez needs to have his stuff nailed down. I saw Brenton Cox out and about a few days ago. That is a full grown man child. He looks like he is 27 and has been on the team three years. Guy must have started shaving in kindergarten.No way he is 240 lbs. a year under Sinclair and that freak is going to be 280 of pure nastiness.

    This is not CTG’s defense. For a D that lost 6-8 starters and a couple top subs we’ve got a good returning cast. The returning starters and subs saw a lot of action last year. And there’s a conga line of 4-star and 5-star recruits salivating like Pavlov’s dog for playing time. Throw in a good coaching staff that returns intact, with the exception of Lanning – Kirby’s first assistant hire of the off season. The D will be solid. Maybe not as good as the 2017 D. But still a top 15 defense. And expect to see steady improvement as the season goes on.

    And since you mentioned CTG, I’m betting fu drops significantly considering the coaches and players they have to replace.

      Exactly. We may have lost “starters” (and some generational players like the Roquan), but we still have lots of experience on defense, plus some top talent to fill in the gaps. Kirby and Tucker know defense. We’ll be fine, actually, better than fine.

    The talent difference alone when comparing ’13 to ’18 gives me solace. Speaking of ’13, that recruiting class ended up as a total disaster; and after the first fall practice, all of the coaches were gravely concerned, as they felt that only a few members of that class had legit SEC talent. Fast forward ahead, and we have an influx of the #1 class coming in with better coaching.

    Some of you who have been around a while know that I was never a CTG fan. Suffice to say I’m glad he’s at UF.

    This is why it is SO important to take care of the cupcakes early. The guys playing this year have a lot of game time experience from the blowouts. In years past, we struggled to put away Directional University and had to keep the starters on the field until the bitter end. The bench rarely got any significant playing time.
