“I’ve changed my tune.”

The Gus Bus hops on the nine conference game-schedule freeway.

Gus Malzahn has become at least the second SEC coach to advocate for playing nine league games.

“I’ve changed my tune. I’m all for the SEC having nine conference games to equal out the league as far as schedule,” Auburn’s coach said during a break Thursday at the 2018 SEC Media Days. “I think Nick [Saban]’s been the only one for it.”

I’m sure your reasons for that aren’t mine, but good on ‘ya for the change of heart, anyway.

When is the last time AU played 10 Power 5 teams in the regular season? I’ll hang up and listen.

Would be cool to have a home/home match up with another SEC team like Texas A&M in a marquis kickoff matchup, but not count against the actually record. Why can’t we do that?

Coaches aren’t dodging the 9th game because of the SECC but the NC. They don’t want to risk the loss on the overall record and commissioner doesn’t want to risk it either.

Sort of. Half the coaches or more don’t have any real illusions about a Natty. But playing 4 cream puffs practically ensures getting bowl elgible. Good for Gus. Now lets have Kirby join that duo.

Do the math on 5 extra home games a decade. Make sure you include the impact on town-gown relations as well.

That’s your primary culprit. The moment ESPN or CBS puts dollars on the table in excess of those 5 games, the ADs and Presidents sign. But right now there’s no incentive from CBS or ESPN to increase that inventory. Which makes 9 conference games a net money loser for athletic departments.

We always talk about this as a competitive issue, and there are certainly competitive ramifications, but the issue begins and ends with money.

I fully agree with Saban on this point, and now I guess I fully agree with this idiot, too.

Rumored full quote was: “I’ve changed my tune. I’m all for the SEC having nine conference games to equal out the league as far as schedule… as long as we don’t have to play the SEC Championship Game. War Eagle!”

If you want to see Gus change his mind again…really fast…put Auburn in the East and Georgia in the West.

“I’m all for the SEC having nine conference games to equal out the league as far as schedule”…translation: I have to play Alabama and Georgia every year, and more teams in the West should have to do that too.
