Today, in damning with faint praise

Talk about your “of all the coaches I know, he’s certainly one of them” takes, here’s Alabama’s Damien Harris on new face in town Butch Jones:

“I think he’s going to do a great job and get with the coaches however he can. Whatever his job … I don’t really know what an analyst is supposed to do but whatever he’s supposed to do, I’m sure he’s going to do it at a very high level.”

Boy, I hope Booch puts that on his résumé.  It’s nothing less than what you’d expect to hear about a five-star champion of life.

  1. Bootch … he’s a punchline for every SEC joke now. I’m not sure even Saban can rehabilitate his career.

Move along, nothing here to see…

There must have been a job Booch could have taken that would have been less demeaning. He couldn’t be whipped any worse if his job title were “coffee bitch.”

Well we’re finally going to get the story. It’s behind the paywall I think, but Dawgpost is doing a multi-part story on the 2015 season.

Damn, that’s harsh. I mean, he was a real ass those last two years at UT. Clearly in over his head. But he seemed to be able to get players there which is the first part of the puzzle and, according to some, more than half the battle. Could he spend a year or two under the radar and then emerge at a mid-tier BigXII school? Or is it straight-up MAC or CUSA for him going forward? Would those places even consider a re-tread? I guess it worked at Ohio, but with all the young coaches out there would you want a PR-disaster? Will ADs forget in a couple of years?

I suppose one can craft a narrative of a coach at a career “reset” who has the humility to be willing to do whatever it takes to be able to learn from Saban and improve as a coach. Certainly, I could be accused of being a skeptical judgement jerk for not seeing it that way.

That said, by many accounts, Butch was “uncomfortable being himself” and given the fairly obvious manner in which he appeared phony to outsider viewers, I can’t help but wonder if this is another instance of him trying to be something he isn’t. To be clear, I don’t know for sure what he is (I know he is NOT a good football coach) nor what anyone would claim to be his strengths (other than familiarity with cliches). I just can’t imagine that him trying to reinvent himself as a disciple of the Process.

I still don’t understand why Saban hired him. Butch must hide his intelligence with an impenetrable dumb poker face.

      Three reasons:

      A) Tennessee is paying him. Butch gets $200,000 a month through February 2021. a number which is “mitigated” by whatever his next employer might be paying him. Bama is paying him $3,000 a month. So, that’s $2,364,000 this year going to Butch instead of other UT football related activities. Next year, another $2,364,000.
      B) You can never have enough eyes evaluating recruiting film. Butch was head coach at Central Michigan, Cincinnati, and Tennessee.
      C) And given Butch was head coach at those three universities, he’s probably got a pretty wide network on the digital rolodex.

I feel sort of sorry for Butch, he’s been made the repository of blame for all that ails the Tennessee program by UT fans. For the record, it was a dumpster fire for many years before Butch got there, with much of the fault lying with UT fans for their “fahr Fulmer” proclivities.

    • Mike Cooley

I kind of agree. I don’t feel sorry for him but I see your point. I would only pick one small nit. The dumpster fire’s origins go back to when the Unge sold their souls and got totally on board with Fulmer after his little sack job on Johnny Majors.

Boooooooch!!!! I wish you were still coaching the Vols. I miss you already.

  10. UGA '97

He’s Bif at the end of the movie “Back To The Future.”

Hey Damien! His job is to wash Nick Saban’s car! and do anything Nick Saban tells him to do!
