Not the week two inexperience they were anticipating

One of the questions I had leading up to last week’s South Carolina game was how ready the ‘Cocks would be on offense, given a new offensive scheme and coordinator.  My thought was that it was early enough in the transition to expect a few hiccups.

Kind of like this:

South Carolina gained only 54 yards rushing while yielding 271 to Georgia. Part of the problem, Muschamp said, was the Gamecocks seeing called runs shift into passes in their up-tempo, RPO (run pass option) attack.

First-year offensive coordinator Bryan McClendon took the blame at halftime and told Muschamp he would be more hard-headed about sticking to run plays.

But once Georgia scored in the third quarter, South Carolina had little choice but to throw the ball to get back in it, Muschamp said.

Muschamp and McClendon discussed how things unfolded with the head coach quickly jumping in that South Carolina’s defense needed to make stops so the offense could have a chance.

“I said, ‘You can’t start shouldering blame on everything.’ You can’t do that as a coordinator,” Muschamp said.

No shame in that.  Rome wasn’t built in a day, you know.  But it never was reasonable to expect that offense to be clicking on all cylinders in game two against an SEC defense, Deebo or no Deebo.

All true.. but not according to the “experts”, i.e. Desmond Howard, Mr. Conventional Wisdom et al…

At Boom’s presser yesterday, he claims the team had communication issues on D and where trying to do to much. He said they would ‘simplify’ things this week.

I really think they just got manhandled at the LOS. UF and UK with do the same to them in the trenches.

Shocking that all the variables SC had to address didn’t break their way. Des Howard was confident SC would win. Also, heat! Sandstorm! Hostile crowd! All summer to prepare! Talent! Muschamp!

    Bles their hearts.

in spite of my glee in whipping them I do think they are a better team than their showing against us.

Hope you are right, we need someone on our schedule to show a pulse. Had thought FU might be a ranked team near the back of the Top 25 but Kentucky didn’t upset them, they were just the better team. With TN and FU on the blink, means KY, Vandy, SC, and Mizzou might have to be the bowl teams from the East.

Reinforces what we have said all summer, UGA will have to be unbeaten to make the playoffs in 2018 because our schedule will get no respect, and shouldn’t. Usually our conference schedule alone can earn you respect, but this year it may let us down. And there is no forgiving the OOC schedule when you really need it. I am OK with having to win the conference to earn a spot, think it should be mandatory with such a limited playoff, but it seems many feel the SEC could get two spots. I don’t see that as possible this year.

I disagree. The only way a one-loss Georgia team misses the playoffs is if that loss comes in the SEC Championship game. They could drop one to Auburn or LSU and still be a shoo-in for the playoff if they took care of Bama to win the title.

it will all work itself out (schedule)…..LSU, MIZZOU, Auburn, KY?? and then the SECCG if we get there. SOS moves up imo, the SEC is never easy.

Agree. I think it was a case of a pretty good team playing an elite team.

  5. It has nothing to do with complexity or communication and everything to do with being dominated on the line of scrimmage.

Coming out empty every play of the first drive was very, very dumb.

Yeah. I think he is FOS about getting away from the run in the first half. They came out throwing on the scripted first series hoping to set up the run. It didn’t work.

This is just Muschamp spinning it for the fan base.

And you dumbasses fall right into the bullshit facade Nike created. Does anyone really think Nike gives a crap about you, Kap or anything else other than selling their shitty shoes? You all make me sick.

I mean, that’s fine, but they had one drive where they had any rushing success all day, and their attempt to come out of the half running led to two three-and-outs. Their backs averaged 3.2 yards a carry.

  9. So far, we have gotten exactly what the doctor ordered. A cupcake (and I cannot stand those games), just to be able to run a solid scrimmage against someone else and a team that was talented in places in a hostile atmosphere. Next came is against a team that loves to throw, so that will help in a game that falls somewhere between a scrimmage and South Carolina be better prepared for Missouri (who might be our toughest ‘early’ test. The environment in Columbia will not come close to the environment in the other Columbia – but that blade cuts both ways – with an early start. I worry less – since this is a Kirby Smart team that hopefully will come in an take any hope out of Mizzou in the first half – bury these guys and get back ready to prepare for UT, which will be less talented than Missouri, but will come in playing with a lot of emotion and physicality…. I think their attitude will be if you can’t beat’em – then beat on them…

Although I doubted hiring a new OC with not experience & a history of bad offenses at UF……..this game had nothing to do with “X’s and O’s, The dawgs just lined up and beat their asses.

Okay, so I have a football question for you that may know. I’m not seeing the Dawgs run the RPO like last year. Was the RPO the scheme to help offset our OL weaknesses and we don’t need that now? I’ll hang up and listen.

I’d have to go back and look for it, but I’m pretty sure Georgia’s first offensive play, the pass to Simmons, was an RPO. I want to say some of the flips out in the flat were also RPOs.

Most of the wr bubble screen type plays were RPO’s, but I don’t remember any being down field throws. The easiest way as a fan to recognize it is to watch the linemen. On Mecole’s TD the line was firing out for a run to the left. They actually ran the exact same play to the right just before the td.
