Tackling tackling

While my post yesterday indicated it’s a little premature to worry about the Georgia pass rush, I do see a defensive area that may be worth some early concern.

Not bad, but not great, either.  And I’ll bet it’s something Kirby’s not satisfied with.

By the way, note the big jump in South Carolina’s rate.  That’s what happens when your defense takes a physical pounding for four quarters.

I’m sure Kirby is not satisfied.

But at least we were consistent from the first week to the second. Ha.

Speaking of pounding a defense, i rewatched the SC game. Holyfield looked like a demolition derby car bashing around out there. That kid runs hard and hits hard.

    • All knees, shoulders, and helmet. No one wants to tackle Elijah.

At Rose Bowl media day, someone asked Roquan which one of UGA’s talented RBs he least enjoyed seeing coming at him through an open hole in practice. RS3 grinned, paused, and said “Seriously? Holyfield, man.” This is his time to shine. I think he’s up to it.

Not only SC, but Al doubled also.

Weren’t most of the D starters pulled last week in the 4th? That will account for some missed tackles.

And I agree about Holyfield. He just looks angry all the time when he gets the ball and runs. When SC stopped him on the sideline on one of his runs, he got up and looked like he was about to squeeze the air out of the ball with his bare hands he was so mad.

Glad he is in the good guys.

This may be a dumb question, but could it be that there are some “missed tackles” (however that is specifically defined by CFB Film Room) that are more acceptable than others, and that our number includes more “acceptable” missed tackles than do the numbers for Ark, Ole Miss, usce, etc.? Watching our defense the last two weeks, it seems that our team speed often has bodies flying around like human projectiles – very, very fast, and wave after wave. A lot of getting there fast by the first guy, who slows or stops the ball carrier’s progress, but then others come in and clean it up for the tackle – often a gang tackle. While you’d like the first tackler who got there so fast to complete the tackle right there, obviously, there is still a benefit of getting there fast to slow or disrupt the play, even if others have to come behind near the same spot (or a couple yards later) to make the tackle. I wonder if a lot of our SEC brethren are not getting there fast and missing the initial tackle, only to be quickly cleaned up by others soon thereafter, but are instead missing the tackles downfield more than we are. There is no doubt we want to improve it in any event. But sitting next to Bama’s defense gives some comfort, especially given who they have played. I guess what I’m saying is all “missed tackles” are not created equally, and I suspect our “missed tackles” and Bama’s “missed tackles” are more conducive to an effective defense than most others. Woof.

    • My perception of out D’s “missed tackles” is similar to yours. It hasn’t been hurting because of the convoy of defenders following closely behind the lead man. I would love to see the first guy wrap up and get the tackle more frequently, and I expect these numbers to improve as the season wears on. Regardless, our D didn’t miss a single tackle last Saturday that was as blatant/beautiful (depending on your perspective) as this one:

Starting D has given up 10 points in two games, they aren’t missing too many tackles. I don’t count the garbage time td last week.

That’s also what happens when 4 tacklers whiff while trying to tackle #4.

Wow check out Arkansas, I guess it’s not a missed tackled when you’re soundly beaten in pass coverage.

Clearly USCjr has closed the talent gap. They finally beat Georgia at something. #cannonshot

I’ll trust the stats, but it sure doesn’t look like we’re missing badly. I don’t remember any busted for big plays.
