Good news for Atlanta hotels

It’s settled, and early.

Naturally, Vegas has already weighed in.

Let’s see… Alabama just crushed LSU by 29… LSU beat Georgia by 20… carry the one, subtract the… ah, hell, forget it.

Sure, it’s hard not to be shocked and awed by this Alabama team after watching it grind LSU into dust last night, but there is still quite a bit of football left to be played, and to my eyes, at least, it appears this Georgia team is beginning to live up to its enormous potential.

There was a fair amount of passionate despondency after Baton Rouge — understandable to some extent — that Georgia’s loss was more than a one-off, that is exposed the structural flaws of both personnel and coaching staff.  Yet here we sit three weeks later having seen this same team dispatch two top ten teams in a row, clinching the division for the second year in a row.

Which is how you get to a sentiment in the wake of last night’s success that would have been widely mocked, even in our own fan base, during the bye week.

I may not be willing to go that far into the future that confidently, but it’s pretty clear this team has more in the tank than many of us thought after the LSU botch.

I’m not predicting back-to-back SEC championships here, but there are trends that at least suggest Georgia will show up next month to play.  For one thing, in what some called the SEC East’s biggest game of the year, a lot of youth was served, and served well.

Although it’s all about this season for 6th-ranked Georgia, those who watched Saturday’s 34-17 win over Kentucky received a glimpse of the future as well, on both sides of the ball.

Take linebackers Brenton Cox and Channing Tindall. They each recorded their first career sacks, while quarterback Justin Fields, offensive lineman Trey Hill, along with defensive back Otis Reese, defensive lineman Jordan Davis, and linebacker Adam Anderson made their presence known.

Head coach Kirby Smart was certainly pleased to see his youngsters take advantage of their respective opportunities.

“It builds confidence. I mean, Channing Tindall needs confidence. I’m telling y’all that guy is fast, he’s athletic; he just needs confidence. He’s been playing well on special teams. Same thing with Adam Anderson. He’s got to gain some weight; he’s got to get better,” Smart said. “Otis is a big, physical guy that has a presence. There are just a lot of young players. But look, there are guys all over that field. Jayson Stanley today makes plays, and all he’s done is contribute to special teams.”

Hill in particular came up huge.

After Lamont Gaillard went out early in the game with what Smart described as a possible hyper-extended knee, Hill went in and played the rest of the game at center.

With the exception of a high snap that resulted in one of Georgia’s two fumbles on the day, the former Houston County standout appeared to play well.

“To be honest with you, there were times this year during fall camp, when we thought Trey Hill may be a starter,” Smart said. “We kind of tossed the idea around a lot of times. He’s just continued to work. A lot of these freshmen who are on our team—highly regarded, talented players. They just keep working and they take on their roles.”

Once Gaillard went out, Georgia’s starting offensive line consisted of sophomore left tackle Andrew Thomas, redshirt sophomore Solomon Kindley, Hill, true freshman Cade Mays, and redshirt freshman Isaiah Wilson.

Two sophomores and three freshmen took it to Kentucky’s experienced defensive front and more than held their own.  Think about that for a minute.  Then think about that all those kids have three more games to play before facing ‘Bama.

And while you’re thinking about that, maybe you should think about the improvement at the most important position on the field.

Again, I’m not making any shock the world predictions here, but when Jake Fromm says“We just want to get to Atlanta. Whoever shows up shows up. We’re going to give it our best and just try to get better and win that football game.”, I’m not going to sneer at him for the suggestion, either.  Nor should any of you, Dawgnation.

  1. Damn straight. I’m not in any ‘bring on Bama’ mindset, but I think we aren’t going to roll over in Atlanta. The only thing I don’t look forward to is the repeated Tua’ NC one pass highlight.

Bama should be favored by 14 over any team in the country. That said, I know our offense will give Bama more fight than LSU did. I don’t know if we’d win, but I can’t see us getting shut out if we play well.

Will THAT be the game Justin Fields throws his first college pass?

    Ahh, hell…he was rolling.

  5. I don’t think we can beat Bama, but I do think Georgia at full strength and playing well has a better shot at knocking them off than anyone else in the league. We have the athletes and the lines of scrimmage to get into a track meet with them if we have to.

If we catch lightning in a bottle and win the turnover battle, we can win. One thing I know is that the Alabama kicking game is a liability if the game is close.

Great post bluto. Let’s get amped up for auburn and enjoy our team. I can’t wait for when we get a 2nd and 26 in the second half of the championship game. I do think Fromm is great and I’m not pressing the fields issue, but I do think fields will be used when they suit up for Alabama.

I think we will need Fields to beat Bama. Saban always struggles with mobile QBs, so it gives us a chance. I bet it’ll be mostly Fromm with Fields coming in to change the pace. The coaches will have to feel comfortable with Fields throwing the ball though.

Actually need Fields? I don’t know about that. But I sure hope he can help. I am not in the camp that says Fields has to play – I think the coaches know what they are doing – but I do wish that when he does play he would something besides just run the ball if only to get a little experience the full position demands.

OTOH, maybe it is an Evil Kirby plan: convince everyone that running is all JFields will do when he’s in and in ATL Bama sells out to stop the run, Mecole gets behind his cover guy and…..

      A guy can dream, right?

I took TODoug to mean we need to give Bama something to plan for. The specter of playing Fields makes them think about him. I also believe we may not see much from Fields, in the way of original play calling, before ATL.

Fromm darn near did it last year. You have some that say UGA did do it but but the refs had other plans.

A healthy UGA with Fromm or possibly Fields does have a fighting chance. This years team was always going to be young and now it is very dinged up. The good news is UGA is looking better and better despite the injuries. Further the injuries (experienced depth next yr) and low turnover makes next year look very promising.

I know I don’t want to be that maybe next year fan (I’m tired of that as well) but you have to admit sweeping the East in what was slated to be a high turnover year is looking good.

I agree but I don’t think he’s thrown it enough to do anything against that D. They either need to get him some passing reps over the next 3 weeks OR they’re purposely hiding the kid.

You know, I’m starting to believe they are hiding him and he gets sprung on Bama at the right time.

So Kirby has been trolling Satan for 3 months and will spring the ultimate revenge on him in Q3&4, in the same building? That’s some crazy conspiracy right there. We all know Justin Fields can throw the ball, he will definitely make someone pay on an RPO soon. He has had a few chances, just decided against tossing it so far. But it will happen, maybe before December. All these coaches recruited him, they know he can fling it if they sell out.

Great stuff. Agree with other commenters that we’ll be up for the fight and Fields will play. Think we’ll need some tweaks to our bending defensive philosophy in the game.

Second – has anyone seen a date for postseason ticket orders, yet? Any guesses on # of pleas for more donations before they declare the cutoff??

Huh? Bend but don’t break is our only chance in that game. We ain’t shutting them down. Need to basically give them the run and hope they get impatient and make some mistakes.

It’s Belichicks strategy vs. the Bills. Let Thurmon Thomas run wild. Take it out of Kelly’s hands and make the score manageable. That’s our path.

We have to agree to disagree on that one my friend. I prefer taking a few more chances / winning and losing on some of those. Afraid we’ll lose more than when we sitting back and “keeping things in front of us“. Also get our ass worn out on D as a bonus.

Why not? Certainly worked for LSU.

What have you seen out of our cover guys, other than 18, that tells you we can put them on an island and win vs. Jeudy, Ruggs, Waddell and the two Smiths? Their averaging over 20 yards a catch as a group.

3’s been a liability all year. Our LB’s aren’t great in coverage.

You’re asking to get run out the damn building.

Let them run between the 20s. Limit the big play. Bog them down in the short field situations and try and force fgs that they can’t make.

The only way to save our defense from playing too many snaps is the offense controlling the ball. That’s the harder job in my view.

The idea that you can just blitz them into submission is foolish:

What defense were we in on second and 26? Probably lose either way. I’m saying take a few more chances – not all out crazy blitzes all the time.

LSU did have some success with pressures and mixing things up. Holding Bamas offense under 30 points is a pretty good effort. It was a corner blitz that just about took Tua out of the game. Why not blitz Campbell if you’re saying he’s going to get burnt anyway?

Cover 2 or maybe cover 3. Either way it wasn’t the call it was the execution and we should have called a timeout 1st. Our guys were celebrating 2 plays too early.

Needed to take a breath and go through the scenarios. That was their “shot play.” On 3rd and 4th you can expect them to play for position. We couldn’t play “prevent” and let them get a cheap 12 yards and we couldn’t give up the big play. Call was fine. Executing was fatal and avoidable in my view. Where else are we gonna need a TO on that possession?

Awesome read Senator. We can beta Bama if our offense can find creative, uptempo ways to get the ball to our playmakers. No way we can line up and play smash mouth football against their D line.

Not saying we can keep it close ,but if we can I love playing a team who has not been in a close game.We need ND ,Clemson ,and Michigan to keep winning bc there is no way we beat Bama twice.

Right now I am more afraid of them cheap shotting our guys this Saturday. They have a long history of dirty play and it isn’t just limited to the Iron Bowl. Fairly the Fairy should have been banned by the SEC that year, several instances of dirty hits against a few teams. They are certainly not above it and their jealousy knows no limits.

One thing I hadn’t paid attention to until yesterday is the fact that LSU was truly the first decent team Alabama has played all year. Their strength of schedule is abysmal. This should work in our favor. Not that I’m saying they suck. Just that yesterday was their first legitimate opponent of the year.

I can see making that case. At the same time, all of those other games were over by the half, some in the first quarter. I can tell you what you don’t want to do, don’t look at the common opponent stats (LSU in particular) . I did that this morning in an article and I haven’t been able to eat a bite since. I’ve watched every game Bama as played, as well as ours this year, and while there is still a lot of football left to play, and anything can happen between now and then, I struggle to see where anyone is ready to face Alabama. If their defense finishes the year the way they did last night night, it’s simply not a fair fight. It was total domination, on the road, against a rival, in Baton Rouge, at night, against the #3 team in the country. This team is on a different level than any Saban team I’ve ever watched. While I won’t wave the white flag either, it’ll take a game like I haven’t seen us play all year long, just to keep us in the game. There are a few weeks left, we better use them wisely.

You have to allow for available personnel on December 1, we both have some banged up players that may, or may not, be able to answer the bell in 4 weeks, or at least be 100%. But is there a chance? You bet there is. I understand a 14-17 point line because bettors nationally will be all over the Tide. I did well, with UGA +8 in January against them, and will bet UGA +14 if our guys are healthy. (Also did well with UGA and Bama yesterday.)

We have our concerns about stopping the run, although we looked better yesterday. Bama is another issue because they not only have horses to deliver the mail on the ground but Jeudy & Company are scary good. I think UGA has a great group of receivers but I have never seen the Tide with so many weapons downfield. I did like what I saw with increased pressure behind the LOS yesterday from our defense. We are the only team in the SEC that has an offense that is talented and diversified enough to move the ball against Bama. Yeah, I am not digging around for my white flag either. Need to keep improving, keep winning, and get healthy.

Was about to say the exact same thing. I sure hope it’s just us speculating right now. As for the coaches and players, they need to get ready for the last two. I can’t figure out which one I’d hate to lose to worse.

Well, I’d actually be more ashamed to lose to Tech by a considerable margin. But the point is, they need to be thinking about Auburn now and just Auburn. Win out and some things take care of themselves. There’s a lot of meat left on this bone.

It’s great to win the East, and an honor to play in Atlanta. But barring either a miracle or a rash of injuries for the Tide, I’ll be pleasantly surprised if we keep it within 2 or 3 TDs.

And with all the youth and inexperience on our side, I honestly won’t be all that surprised if we drop a game between now and then. I do not envy the coaching staff having to keep these young guys focused now that a trip to Atlanta is already locked up.

Excuse me for Munsoning but we have Auburn coming up next and they may suck this season but as usual they are fill of Georgia boys that will play their tails off to upset the world. Then we have a UMass team that could be a speed bump. Then we have the North Ave. Trade School that will cause me to hold my breath every time they cut block our guys. We should win these games but getting through them with our starting 22 in good health is doubtful. Munson out.

Unfortunately losing to Bama knocks us out of the playoffs. Given the 3+ weeks available to get healthy, I think this team could make some noise there. I guess we’ll have to see how it plays out.

I am a little more relaxed after the way we played the run last yeasterday though. If I see any more linemen sitting on the ground, I may not be able to watch either game though.
