If there’s anybody who should know what typical Auburn is like, it’s Tommy Tuberville.
“There’s problems in Auburn,” said Tuberville, who led the Tigers to an undefeated season in 2004. “There’s always been problems in Auburn. And, for some reason, they will continue to be problems in Auburn.
“That being said, the things I’m hearing out of Auburn is if they do pay Gus Malzahn $32 million (for a buyout), they want to have somebody in place that can settle the troops down.
“It’s a complete mess, to be honest with you. There are too many people up there trying to make a decision. Obviously, they don’t have a clue what they are doing.”
LMAO. You don’t have to be a program insider to realize that.
***********************************************************************
UPDATE: Well, now.
Though no agreement has been finalized and changes remain possible, Gus Malzahn is on the verge of accepting a reduced buyout and other limitations to remain for his seventh season as Auburn’s head football coach, sources told AuburnUndercover.
Malzahn’s buyout, sources said, would be reduced by an unspecified amount. Any coaching staff moves would have to be revenue neutral, effectively removing the possibility of paying buyouts for assistant coaches and assuring Chip Lindsey would remain as offensive coordinator unless he chooses to leave.
President Steven Leath laid out the offer in a Sunday meeting with Malzahn. Leath left Tuesday morning for a meeting in Washington, D.C., and, according to athletic department sources, left negotiations with Malzahn in the hands of trustee Raymond Harbert…
Auburn coaches, sources said, have faced questions about Malzahn’s future on virtually every stop on the recruiting trail over the past two days.
How do you go from having boosters ready to shell out $32 million to run off Malzahn to reducing the buyout and restricting assistant coach compensation?
A fine mess, which at Auburn means business as usual.
It’s shaping up to be a cold winter.
A huge dumpster fire just across the state line will warm my soul.

They won seven, right? So they are bowl eligible. What else could they ask for? They’re blaming all this on Gus, but what would you do in his shoes?
Exited aubrun executive: “Gus, we love you. Here’s 49 million dollars so you can stay our coach forever.”
Gus: ” No, I really can’t accept this. You see, we are going to lose to UCF in the bowl game and are probably going to suck reaally bad for the foreseeable future. Let’s just leave it lie it is and see how it plays out.”

He can’t possibly be wishing it 32 millions’ worth.
Gus should be grinning like a Cheshire Cat. He’ll have enough to rent an airplane to fly a trolling sign over JH stadium every game. “I’m not flying this plane, I’m in the South Pacific on my yacht that you’re paying for. Love, Gus” That’s a lot, but he could use two or three planes and split the message between them.

I know that we’re all caught up with our angst over the SEC Championship Game and all, but you really do need to take a step back every now and then and really appreciate the time we are living in.
Georgia is ascendant and powerful and appears to be poised for a run of several dominant seasons. Meanwhile, there is smoke rising over the crater in Auburn, Alabama where the football program used to be. For all of their preseason bluster, the Tennessee Vols are staying home for bowl season after a third straight loss to Vanderbilt. Florida got boat raced by Missouri and isn’t recruiting all that well. South Carolina has once again followed their preseason national championship with a failure to crack the top three in the division. And we just handed Georgia Tech one of their most humiliating defeats.

Are donations to buy out a coach’s contract tax deductible?
Also you know that one felt real good rolling off the tongue for Tuberville.

Tubbs was a mediocre coach and on his way to get fired before Lauder and Company started hiring and firing OCs for him as he couldn’t hire an OC on his own. He eventually became disgruntled when he figured out he wasn’t the one making decisions.

I’m not particularly a Tuberville fan but if “mediocre” means winning an SEC Championship, having an undefeated season (even FU has never had one in its entire history), being the Walter Camp Coach of the Year, the Bear Bryant Coach of the Year and being elected by his peers as President of the American Football Coaches Association, well I guess he is a mediocre coach. BTW, his record against Georgia (5-5) is better than any of those other goons that cow college hired since Pat Dye.

BTW: wouldn’t Gus have had a “jet gate” clause in his K like Tubs demanded?
(For those who don’t remember, after the powers that be got caught trying to give Tubs job to Petrino, he leveraged his success into a provision requiring his buyout be paid if anyone from Auburn discussed his job with anyone without his knowledge.)
I can’t imagine anyone going to work for those guys without that clause.

I was told not too long ago by a guy I know well, who had played a couple rounds of golf with TT in FL, that TT felt the UGA job was maybe the best gig in the whole SEC, maybe the whole country. Ok, I’ve given this some more thought, and I have to ask “are we seeing the end of Auburn’s bankroll?”
I know it seems to have no limit in their quest to not be Alabama’s little brother, but the $32 million to Gus plus a $7-8 million a year 10 year deal for the next guy has to handcuff them. Right?
I imagine in 3-4 years they will pass the collection hat to fire the next guy and pay his buyout, and there will be a whole lot of alligator arms in the Family.

Yeah. I got nothin’.
All my inside contacts are long gone. This is a ridiculous mess. Auburn needs to take a lesson from Tuberville and always have a list of coaches to call on so the next time Sexton says “___ is offering my boy $$$” you can walk him to the door and while shaking his hand ask him to be sure to thank his client for the time. Then call the next guy on the list.
Besides, it’s BB season. We’re taking the kids to see AU play @ NCSU in 2 weeks.

Why in the world would Gus agree to a reduced buyout? What is Auburn’s leverage, they will pay him the regular buyout if he doesn’t agree to a reduced buyout?

I agree, Gus can look them in the face and tell them “I’m happy with the contract you gave me less than a year ago, I don’t want to change anything”.

Depends on the details of the contract. Maybe he takes less if any future employment doesn’t change amount.

If Kirby is truly a Saban disciple, would should hire Gus as a $40K a year “analyst.” That way, Gus hardly touches the payout amount and everyone gets to troll Auburn.

Yeah, that makes no sense at all. Why would Gus agree to reduce the buyout just so he can stay there and go through the same mess next year, or the year after?

The only thing I can think of is that maybe Gus wants the offset clause taken out so he can go to work as HC somewhere else immediately but still get a big payday.

If Gus accepts changed terms to remain the Auburn head coach, he’s a dead man walking. You might as well take the buyout now, go be an analyst on the SECN, and work three months a year. Cheat-zik has made a nice living at exactly that.

I was wondering same thing: why would Gus agree to stay for less. Just saw Washington Post article explaining AU got Gus on a technicality…most of his buy out to be paid by Tigers Unlimited, a private booster group, and the necessary signature to make it legit was never notarized or some such issue…tried linking it here but keep messing it up. Someone more tech savvy, please do.

Re the “update”. Sounds like they’re trying to get Pandora’s box closed before it’s completely empty. But this isn’t 1960 . News and info travel fast…this will probably go down as an overzealous group of boosters trumping the Jetgate fiasco in spades.
Seems that Gus has them by the short hairs, so why would he settle like that unless there is a technicality involved? There’s lot of intrigue and skulduggery to be unearthed here. Stand by. Gus can cooperate all he wants but in the end, he’ll get a dagger in the back.
