And that is why anyone who suggests the next round of CFP expansion should be coupled with the elimination of conference championship games will be laughed out of the room. The SEC ain’t giving up that sweet, sweet cash source.

Geez. Pretty sure I could scrounge up round trip plane tickets to San Fran, throw in a pair of Pac-12 championship tickets, and still come out cheaper than what it’d cost to go the the Benz on Saturday.

The SEC makes the money on the original sale..not the inflated aftermarket price. How long will they continue to leave that money on the table? It happens most every year.

This is nitpicking details but I’m pretty sure the cheapest face value is either $120 or $125. Those would be the nosebleeds sold by the schools.
The cheapest face value sold by the conference starts at $140.

The school/conference absolutely does make money from the secondary market. They get a cut of the fees added on to the ticket price. MLB gets back 50% of the fees Stubhub charges.

I agree of course but just fyi – the SEC forged a deal with Ticketmaster starting this year to have them be the “official ticket partner” for this game. So Stubhub isn’t “official” for this game. It’s still the most popular though by far.

Beware of StubHub, they have screwed me a couple times. Bought a parking pass, found out I did not need it so listed it for sale again with StubHub. My Seller did not come through, so instead of finding me a replacement ticket, StubHub stuck me with a charge for not providing the ticket to my buyer. Another time I bought tickets and the seller did not come through, StubHub told me they would only refund my money despite the fact they could have given tickets in the same section. I use Vivid and Ticketmaster now.

The money will be in the broadcast rights when the CBS deal is over. The next deal will probably sell the rights to the SECCG separately from the regular season games. Expect the game to fetch at least $40M-50M. I have seen reports from some media analysts that suggest that it is as valuable as the Rose Bowl which fetches $80M. The next round of media rights bidding is going to ruin the sport.

You’re looking at it all wrong. I’d be surprised if there’s even a dime left on the table in pricing. That face value price isn’t what the owner paid for the ticket. The face values are deeply discounted so the required donation “which includes the right to buy the ticket”… and is tax deductible unlike the face value…. makes up the bulk of what you charge.
Its funny because not only is it tax deductible, but it makes the purchaser feel like they’ve done a good deed and bought tickets cheap. WIN WIN!
Really they’ve just paid an arm and a leg for tickets just like everyone on the secondary market. If the “per game” price for the championship game somehow comes out less than the secondary market price then hooray….. but tell me, how much did that purchaser pay for UMass tickets/donation compared to the secondary market?
What really burns my ass though is the notices they put out asking people to report students and faculty who sold their tickets on the secondary market. “Hey these ass holes didn’t make any donations on top of the ticket price, they can’t do that! Tell us so we can revoke their tickets!” Like they’re criminals or something.

With Clemson and Pitt as the participants, it still wouldn’t sell out. They tried it in Jacksonville and it failed miserably.
Thank goodness the SEC was smart enough to move the game from Birmingham to Atlanta. One of the benefits of the move kept the ACC out of the Dome.

If acc, big 10 and pac 12 just went to big 12 rules and matched top 2 teams from the entire conf. those prices will rise fast.

The ACC is already matching up the two best teams, since Pitt would have the tiebreaker over Syracuse. The B1G and Pac-12 would be rematches of games that were just played. Ohio State-Michgian would probably be a big seller, but I doubt it for Washington-Washington State unless they held the game in Seattle.

Charlotte is a stone’s throw from Greenville, Spartanburg, and Columbia. Unbelievable that Clemson fans aren’t snapping up tickets to watch their team collect another championship. I’d be all over those tickets at $40 a pop if Georgia were facing an 8-4 Mississippi State for the SEC.

I sat through the Austin Peay game this year, in weather that was twice as miserable as any cold rain, and an opponent that was twice as bad as Pitt. And there was no championship on the line. I just like to watch my Dawgs play ball. But suit yourself

A coworker of mine says that ticketmaster has an interest in helping the scalpers because the scalpers can easily resell on Ticketmasters on site. (I’ve never used it, so not sure) Ticketmaster then gets a cut of the resell amount. This was in reference to concert tickets, though, so not sure if it totally applies here.

I went to the first one back in 1992 in Birmingham. It was freezing cold, and they delayed the kickoff because the Army-Navy game ran long. Florida didn’t sell out their ticket allotment and offered them to the general public. If memory serves they were given 10,000 and sold 8,000. Bought mine for the face price of $30. Still have it somewhere in a box. (Dang I’m getting old.) Glad they moved it indoors, but can’t imagine paying those prices now.

Sheesh, 30 years ago I went over to see the Illini play the Gators in the All American Bowl. It was Emmitt’s last game and I don’t remember how much tickets were but I bet they weren’t much!
