Okay, here goes:

Auburn, Georgia and the SEC are nearing an agreement to move the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry to earlier in the 2020 season in an effort to alleviate scheduling burdens for both schools, industry sources tell Auburn Undercover.

The parties still have hurdles to overcome, but it is expected the 14 SEC schools and commissioner Greg Sankey will move forward to push the game to September or October, the sources said. The scheduling change would lift enormous weight from the Tigers’ difficult November schedule, which was set to feature away games at both Georgia and Alabama in the final three weeks of the regular season. Alabama won the SEC title in 2018 and Georgia defeated Auburn to win it in 2017.

It’s possible the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry could remain in September and October through 2024, one source said, but those details have not been finalized.

The move marks a massive change for the rivalry. The game has been played in November each time the Tigers and Bulldogs met since 1937.

Auburn is currently scheduled to face UMass on Nov. 14, 2020. The date is usually set aside for Auburn-Georgia.

That’s some cheeky scheduling there, Tigers.  But I digress, at least a little.

My first reaction, one that’s no doubt shared by any Dawg fan who’s had a pulse over the last decade, is that once again Greg McGarity has rolled over in the face of a slight breeze.  Then I remind myself that Kirby Smart isn’t in the rolling over business.  So what’s his possible agenda here?  Unleash the hounds of rank speculation!

Let’s started with this observation from intrepid reporter Seth Emerson.

I get why Auburn wants the game moved, but what’s Kirby’s reasoning?  Well, let’s start with something he said last summer ($$):

It wasn’t that way until 2013, when because of expansion and scheduling concerns, the SEC asked Georgia to make a second straight trip to Auburn. Georgia agreed, but now Kirby Smart, who wasn’t around when the change was made, would like to see Georgia get two straight home games against the Tigers.

“Yeah, absolutely. If we can get a chance to fix that and return the favor that we paid to them. I hear about that a lot,” Smart said. “It would make it more consistent and balance that out. It would probably be helpful in the long run. But I’ve got a feeling there’s more to it than just us and them. It always affects so many other moving parts. But it would be nice to do that.”

Getting that second straight home game to restore the schedule to its previous balance would be, of course, the mother of quids to Auburn’s quo of moving the game to an earlier point in the schedule.  Note that Marcello’s report says this whole deal in still in the negotiating stage.  I’d like to think that means there are things on the table being floated besides the calendar.  That trade makes sense and undoes a previous McGarity grovel in error.  So good for Kirby if he’s fighting for that as a condition to accommodating Auburn’s wish to move earlier.

There may also be a secondary benefit.  Obviously, Auburn finds it beneficial not to have a murderer’s row ending every season of Georgia and Alabama; from Georgia’s selfish standpoint, if such a move helps Auburn play a more competitive Iron Bowl, that’s a tactical benefit for the Dawgs.

Another consideration:  to move Auburn to the middle part of Georgia’s schedule means another SEC game has to be displaced.  The obvious candidate is Tennessee.  (Before you go there, do you really think Boom would welcome a November playing Georgia and Clemson?  Not gonna happen.)  Fulmer’s Vols made a living coasting through November.  That month hasn’t been nearly as friendly to UT as it once was (thanks, Vanderbilt!), but adding Georgia certainly wouldn’t help the Vols in that regard.

Granted, there are a lot of moving parts here.  One other consideration, which, by the way, the SEC has graciously ignored this season, is that it doesn’t necessarily behoove Georgia to overload one month in the schedule with Western division opponents.  Bringing in Notre Dame in late September may have been a factor in that, but you’d have to think in years when there isn’t a marquee non-conference opponent on the schedule, November is probably going to be a dreary home scheduling month.

Is getting the extra home game reset worth the trade off?  My guess is that Kirby thinks so, and in the end, that’s what most likely matters.  And if Georgia doesn’t get the reset and still rolls over on the schedule?  Then we can all thank McGarity for another edition of Bulldog Profiles in Courage.

Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity had no official comment on the matter when contacted by DawgNation on Tuesday night.

Given his PR track record, that’s the most sensible tack he can take right now.

  1. No! No! No! to moving the Auburn game to September or early October. I don’t give a rat @$$ about Auburn’s issue with Georgia and Bama late in the season.

It isn’t just their run with Georgia and Bama but UGA with Auburn and GT which are on the same rotation. How many griped UGA only had cupcakes at home after the WLOCP?

In an ideal world UGA/Auburn flips with back to back games in Athens but I will take this over doing away with cross divisional rivals which dump 3 big games for the SEC. I had rather see UF vs LSU than UF against anyone in the East outside UGA. As for UT vs Bama, Saban won’t be at Bama forever and they’ll be back to hiring and firing getting in and out of probation..

      • This has nothing to do with Cross division rivalry games between the other SEC teams. This is purely between Auburn and UGA. We might get an extra home game? At this point I’m over that. Keep the game in November. I don’t care for Auburn.

The round robin home/away rotation was the reason why UGA traveled to Auburn 2 years in a row. The flipped resulted in Auburn getting Bama and UGA at home on the same years, and UGA gets Auburn and GT at home on the same years.

Auburn wants to gamed not to separate the game but so that their home schedule is more even through the year. UGA fans have complained about not getting any good home games from late October through the end of the year on the years UGA travels. But put Auburn in the spot light and some seemingly are blinded by their Auburn hatred to see the big picture.

LSU/UF want out of the permanent cross division rivalry games. UT might not put up a fight dropping Bama.

      • I want the game to stay where it is. If Auburn wants to balance the schedule, agree to back-to-back games in Sanford. Playing Georgia and Alabama in November every year hasn’t been a problem for a century. Why is it now?

It is now because in the past one was at home and the other away, see my comment above UGA fans have complained for the same reason.

If you can’t get one at home and the other away, then reshuffle the schedule and move a game into that spot which fits the rotation.

          Like

          • But reshuffling the schedule DOES NOT change the fact that UGA & Ala. will be away games the SAME year UNLESS Aub. does 2X @ Georgia. This then puts DSOR on the ORIGINAL rotation prior to 2013 which created this whole mess!!!

If McGarity is going to retire is this is parting gift to us. Stupid move for us. We don’t need to roll over for Auburn to fix it just play two home games in November. The west has too much pull in Tuscaloosa.

The only other possible benefit, to both teams, is that moving the game up means that the loser’s chances of playing for a championship aren’t down the toilet.

    • Ours weren’t in 2017. Win the SEC with 1 loss and you’re in. No matter when the game is played you lose your margin for error if you lose (unless, of course, you’re Bama).

You’re right about 2017 but I was thinking about the national championship and having to be ranked in the top 4 that the earlier you lose the better.

        Like

        • I don’t think that’s the case in the brave new world of 4. The SEC champion is going to be in the final 4 whether that’s with a loss in September or November unless there are 4 13-0 (or 12-0 if you are ND) teams.

Again, it is IMPOSSIBLE to have two straight home games versus Auburn in the current scheduling matrix. When the change was made in 2012/2013, Georgia-Auburn was the ONLY traditional East-West rivalry that was played in the West in even years and East in odd years. Until we go to three cross-over division games, there is no way we are ever going to get 2 home games in a row against Auburn. Please stop beating this dead horse!
PS moving the game to earlier in the season is BS, don’t know why we’d do it….

Also, i assume it would put Auburn permanently in the position of having a 5/3 home/away split in conference games each year instead of 4/4.

No, in years in which Auburn is 5/3, guess which team would be 3/5??? It certainly won’t be any of the 12 other teams in the league who are at 4/4 now. That is why it is not as simple as “just playing in Athens 2 straight years”….

79Dawg is spot on. That is the reason why we wound up back to back on the Plain. That is not going to be changed without every other SEC team swapping out. Move AU to the east and Mizzou to the west and that could fix that, but as it is right now, we are not ever going to get that game back. That ship has done sailed and it matters not one iota whether Greg McGarity is Greg McGarity or Greg McGarity is Attila the Hun.

A – the SEC will NOT put 2 same state teams into diff. divisions nor pods. So anybody who believes Aub./Ala., Miss./MSU, or Tn./Vandy will is wrong.
B – the SEC had LSU/UF play 2015-2016 @ LSU & 2017-2018 @ UF & it didn’t impact any other SEC schools. What’s wrong with doing the same for us? After all, it puts DSOR & COFH as away games in opposite years just like does for Aub. with DSOR & IB. There is NO REASON to move the game to a different date in the schedule.

B – The SEC allowed LSU/UF to play 2015-2016 @ LSU & 2017-2018 @ UF & didn’t ask the other schools for their input. That would fix this whole issue!

If we get the schedule reset to where we’re not playing at Auburn and at Tech in the same years, I could see switching the Auburn and Tennessee games around. Orange is orange. Makes sense to play UF and UT late and perhaps with the division title in the balance.

The change may offer us some relief if we’re going to be playing our rotating sec west opponent in late November (like we are this year).

Moving Auburn out of November feels like more abandoning of tradition in favor of other forces. Feels like Heresy. It’s been my favorite home game every other year for as long as I can remember. To me it’s my favorite rivalry game we play, and usually played in perfect football weather. I was pissed when we didn’t have the Tech / Auburn November games every other year when we made that deal, and to me this would be another loss, despite getting a home game back on track. They’re really testing my fandom with this one.

If it gives Auburn a better shot at beating Alabama, would that be bad for us?

That series being a 50/50 series rather than a 80/20 series seems like it would only benefit us on the field and in recruiting.

At least against Auburn, A&M or LSU in a SECCG, we don’t have to worry about Steve Shaw’s bunch royally screwing us over like they did for Alabama.

Granted I hate auburn more than anyone, probably ever, but them beating Alabama a couple of more times a decade can only help us get that big trophy that’s alluded us since 1/1/1981.

Lulz. Yeah rolling over so auburn might possibly be more competitive against bama surely won’t blow up in our faces.

This reeks of knee jerk nonsense because of recently bias.

The real solution is to play the tech game to start one season in the Benz and then get tech away when we have auburn at home.

If we had a championship level ad he would be working that tech angle and telling auburn to quit crying and just get better.

      1) how is this rolling over IF we get the extra home game back?

      2) why wouldn’t UGA benefit from a SEC west that is balanced at the top? Don’t we want to see Alabama dominance end and have LSU and A&M winning some division races?

That seems the best path to replacing Alabama at the top. A cut throat west and an east where were double digit faves in every match up. 7-1 gets us in the game and every time we win it we’re in the dance. How is this a bad thing for us?

There is NO WAY we’re getting the home game repaid because it would leave Auburn with 5 SEC home games one year and 3 the other years. That’s probably a fools errand to think they (or the conference) would agree to that (even though they probably should since they got this discussion started).

        I say screw Auburn.

I dont know. I think UGA should focus on making sure UGA is good enough to pound Bama into the dirt every december.

The ROI on spending our effort and resources to try and make the SEC West better so that they might possibly weaken bama to the point that we can beat them pounds like a pretty dumb idea.

Play Tech in the Benz when Auburn is home. Then the next season we play @ Historic Mark Richt Field where UGA has only lost 3 times in my life and we play Auburn in Athens.

We would have given up a game in athens that one season, but the Benz game would be a home game for the Dawgs.

Of course, but Bama losing some luster is good for us no matter how it happens.

The ONLY thing that has kept us from taking over the CFB world has been those stripes in the 2 bammer games.

I say by whatever means necessary, get them the hell out of the way and the world is ours! The sooner the better too.

That’s never happening b/c of UT vs Alabama. It would take a 9 game schedule with 2 permanents from the other division to make that happen.

          Another W.

Whether it deserves it or not is questionable, but UA/UT is a storied rivalry to both sides that I don’t see going away.

          The biggest are:

          UA/AU
          UGA/UF
          UA/UT
          UT/UF
          UGA/AU
          LSU/Mississippi
          Mississippi/MSU

Those are pretty much untouchable no matter how non-competitive they become.

I’m sorry but I don’t think Will or anyone in Cola has the pull in B’ham that UT and Phil do; and the Vols aren’t going to roll over to make their schedule harder at the end of the year.

I don’t have any problem playing annual slow-starter Auburn in September keeping the current home-and-home pattern and flipping annual late-season-depleted South Carolina to the November slot. It means we’d have USC at home and Tech away and the Cocks will have us away and Clemson at home in odd years. Totally works for me.

My thoughts regarding the 2 in a row vs AU a while back. I’m sure I’m wrong somewhere.

It kept AU from having 5 home SEC games every other year, and UGA was involved because we were their only constant and the annual UF game in Jax made it work for us in the SEC when Mizzou and aTm were admitted.

A simple 2 games in a row with AU in Athens throws a wrench into all of what the above fixed. It is my understanding it could leave UGA with only 2 SEC games in Athens some years. I think it is 3 now when we are “home” in Jax.

Frankly, I don’t care when we play AU, I just care that we beat AU.

I don’t see why having an SEC East team as our last game wouldn’t work.

I also see this as a ploy by AU to get into the SEC East. Which opens up another can or two of worms. Who is Bama’s constant? Au or Ut? And you put traditional 4 “football powers” in the East, while leaving only 2 in the West. I’m sure as shit sure that Bama is for AU moving to the East. F’ that.
