Summer of George

Gawd help me, but I have to say the Gator message boards have become more entertaining than StingTalk.  Which is really saying something, when you think about it.

Take this thread posted in response to CBS ranking Kirby higher than Mullen in a list of SEC coaches.  You’ve actually got people making inspired arguments that recruiting is an overrated aspect of college coaching.

I just feel like Kirby’s getting the benefit of the doubt because his roster is SO stacked that there’s no reason he shouldn’t be in position to keep having his team right there in the thick of the playoff hunt. Maybe he continually proves that he’s an inept in-game coach and never actually ends up breaking through. With Mullen, I think you still wonder a little bit more exactly how much more he has to do to get UF back in the playoff hunt so he has the same shot to break through that Kirby has.

It’s like a bizarro Dawg Vent from a couple of decades ago.  They’ve become what they once (rightfully) mocked.

Absolutely fascinating to read their “spasms of lucudity”… I wonder what color the sky is in their world.

The realists are at least in there, like the guy who makes the full case for Smart over Mullen. Now, whether or not they’re actual Gator fans, I have no idea.

I’m pretty sure that’s a Dawg. It sounds like one of us. No Gator fan would ever go that far into detail to explain why Kirby has accomplished more than Sideshow Dan the Clown. They’d just point to the two SEC East divisions, the SEC title, the Rose Bowl win, and NC game appearance.

It is funny though, how many Gator fans truly in their hearts believe that, “Kirby ain’t done shit.”

Gators only include the parts of history that suit them. So when we tell them that they sound like us 10 years ago, they have no concept of that.

That whole chain of posts is so much fun to read! Some of them seem to have a legitimate view of what DM has “accomplished” in his ten years, or maybe better said, what he has not accomplished, but if they post it they are immediately, “yes, butted” with garbage like “Kirby inherited a good team” etc. So much pleasure for me to read how unhappy they are to have to make excuses.

I’m honestly shocked to see Thomas Goldkamp is the one who wrote that nonsense. Such displays of absurd homerism are usually beneath him. Maybe he’s just pandering to the crowd there, which increasingly needs it’s fee fees coddled.

FU misery vs Tech misery. That’s kind of like having to choose between lobster and filet mignon. With either you are going to feel very satisfied.

A Gator post a day keeps the blues away. Love the crap coming out or Gainesville.

Tough call as to which of those commenters is my favorite, but I think it’s the guy who says Kirby is just a starting QB and a bunch of injuries away from a “Muschamp year.” Which puts us in the same company as, oh, I don’t know, every other team in the country. It’s a little like saying Mike Tyson was only a broken arm away from getting his clock cleaned by Michael Spinks.

Even then, I’m going to go out on a limb and say that even if Georgia lost Fromm and suffered six or seven other significant injuries, they wouldn’t go 4-8.

This has been my absolute favorite offseason in so long. I wake up giddy every morning to see what’s happened at UF.

I’ve always loved the line of “he’s not that great a coach he just recruits really well / has more talented players”. Uh yeah acquiring and developing talent is like the most important responsibility of a coach / staff. Also love how they simultaneously say Kirby hasn’t accomplished anything but somehow Dan has.

Actually you know what, never mind, build Mullen a statue outside of the swamp and sign him and Grantham to ten year contracts with a $100mm buyout clause. Can we also get Felipe franks a 5th year of eligibility?

Getting some of their blowhard fans to read it is even more fun. You tease’um with the team possibilities, say something that passes for sincerity about Dan and then slip in a quote from the Orange and Blue or Alligator Alley. Then they are in the doubting mood such that you can goad them to read those blogs on their phone or hand computer and stand back to watch their body emotions; the anguished facial look, the slumped shoulders, the silence of their wheels turning for a reply ; those are the indicators of their stabbing heart pain, the emotion welling up behind their eyes, the crushing reality of their hopes. Male and female gators alike.

After their recovery, they begin to talk like magpies about their 12 game winning streak or TT until you remind them that Georgia has always led this series and still does by 10 games and growing and that Tebow is stuck in triple A without any future in sports. Maybe he can write another immature emotional epistle and nail it on the clubhouse steps or participate in his hobby of making small Filipino boys grab their little circumcised member in fear after seeing him . The awkward silence and shuffling of their feet is my clue to drain my beer and walk out with a Georgia smile that matches my cap insignia. Later, I look at the ganja pipe, slide it back into it’s empty coffee can in a grocery shopping bag and figure the high is already spiked in the reality of us kicking their ass for years to come. Life is good in my limited time on this earth. I drive home with the windows down and the breeze blowing in my face.

    Fuck these motherfuckers.

Especially when they’re so in denial as to become unintentionally hilarious and even pitiable.
