Run, Georgia.

Gary Danielson, somewhat surprisingly, doesn’t think Jake Fromm is the key for Georgia’s offensive hopes tomorrow.

“There’s one player that has to have a good game for Georgia, and that’s D’Andre Swift,” Danielson said. “I don’t see how Georgia can stay in this game without the breakaway abilities of Swift. He’s the real deal. I think Swift is the key to the game.

“Jake Fromm is going to show up fine. Their receivers are going to be what they are – they’re not game-breakers yet. D’Andre Swift has to be a difference-maker in this game.”

Josh describes what difference making has to look like.

On the other side of the ball, UGA’s offense tries to get back on track against a defense that can give up yards on the ground. In SEC games, LSU is allowing over five yards per carry. In addition to that. Using secstatcat.com, I was able to filter out their opponents inside runs and discovered that the Tigers are allowing over six yards per carry on these runs.

If you’ve read any of my posts of late, you know that these runs are UGA’s bread and butter, but have not been productive of late. But, on UGA’s 20 TD (against Power 5/non-GT) scoring drives, UGA ran the ball 2:1 with 75 of the 103 runs using inside zone or inside zone reads that averaged 4.9 YPA.

There it is, when the Dawgs run the ball in the middle with success they score.

So, don’t wince when they try that.  😉

Maybe Brad will channel his inner Verne and have the opportunity to say, “Swift does not have great speed” on Saturday right as he breaks one through the middle of the LSU defense…. Deja vu all over again!

Herrien becomes a legend this weekend.

Herrien is terrific, but he isn’t built to be a legend. If any RB, besides Swift, is going to the breakout player it will be Cook. Not saying I am predicting that to happen (we can win other ways), but I feel our injury situation has the ofeensive coaches looking for some new ways to feed Cook in space. He has wanted a chance to strut his stuff, I think he has a group of plays for tomorrow. Should those plays accomplish getting him the ball with some room to operate, he could be the name everyone is talking about. I feel if we win, it will be our usual grind it out, keep it close, and walk off with an ugly win that only some Dawgs fans will be happy with. But our margin to win is razor thin, going to take a very disciplined, patient effort to knock off this Cajun machine. 2 out of 3 LSU would win, we have a chance.

Let’s stop pretending. We all know Rodrigo’s gonna win this thing for us. Dawgs win 27-14, all 27 points coming from FGs. Speaking of which, does anyone know which kicker won that online voting thing?

We’ve still got to throw the ball, at least a little bit. We need to hit a couple of those near-misses, like the TD vs Florida that was called back by a holding penalty, and the TD vs Missouri (?) that was called back because Pickens lined up on the LOS instead of the slot. Can’t have those kinds of misses tomorrow.

I love that Josh filtered out GT with the other non-P5 teams. That’s Chantastic!

If you’re LSU, you just stack the line and play man, like every other team we’ve played. They have better athletes than most unfortunately.

You’ll know in the first quarter. If UGA can get good rushing yards against a crowded box, they have a chance. If they can’t, they have no chance.

I’d say, given the WR limitations, the defense needs to keep it close in the first half to have a shot. I’m not optimistic that Robertson and Blaylock and Simmons are getting open vs LSU’s top 2 corners.

Uh am I missing something? there’s nothing in that post that suggests we’ve run the ball effectively inside since the South Carolina game and thus we should stick to that strategy for establishing the run. Josh basically admits the inside runs were eliminated by Florida, A&m and Auburn.

As far as the stat about LSU giving up big plays inside, those looked pretty similar to Florida (too lazy to look up the senators post but there was plenty of ink spilled here about how Georgia would have success running inside against Florida) and suffice to say Florida completely shut down the ground game inside.

The two things the offense seems to have done well are 1) running to the perimeter (Swift’s first TD run against Kentucky was when we finally ran to the edges) and 2) play action passing. Based on what we’ve been able to do, that’s what I would do to then try and open up the middle of the field but I’m not the guy being paid millions of dollars to figure this shit out

  11. Sounds like he doesn’t believe in Fromm and the passing game if he’s talking about Swift breaking away.

I think we need to have success running to take some pressure off of Fromm and to eat clock. Keep Burrow on the damn sideline.

  12. I love inside runs even when they don’t work. I’ve seen Georgia many times hit that wall with a sledgehammer repeatedly until eventually there are huge cracks you can swing right through.

  13. A am concerned about dropped passes by WR/TE’s and we can’t let Burrow scramble continually for first downs.

It will be interesting to see how many carries Swift gets early. Typically Gary ignores anybody other than Swift. Georgia’s run game as other talent as you may have noticed. Swift has been beat up since before South Carolina, so, unless Ron Courson has worked another miracle, Swift ought to be used gently early….let the other guys do the wearing down.

Note from Wanda Jean Hickenlooper, new Kharmic Bitchez director of communications, “We will be watching you muthafuckas….dont get cocky early.” #LISTENTODABITCHEZ

I’m not all that interested in what Gary has to say during the week. Has he said anything about swift not being 100%? (I’m not going to read the linked piece)

If it turns out running doesn’t work, will Gary issue a public apology to UGA fans?

This team is severely limited on offense. I don’t have the answers (Lord knows it’s not from a lack of trying!) and apparently neither do our coaches. 12 games have been completed and we have witnessed this offense regress. I for one do not expect to see improvement, new plays, twists, nor wrinkles in the 13th game of the season. 10 to 13 points is about the most we will score tomorrow. The real bummer is that our defense is an elite, championship caliber unit.

    • They scored 21 at Auburn, but only 10 against a weaker defense on a neutral field site?

I’m beginning to think you’re a performance artist, Skep. 😉

Don’t forget the 24 against Florida, which is also a better defense than LSU, at a neutral site no less.

Also, Georgia was playing a lot of teams that had two weeks to rest and prepare vs one week for Georgia to rest and prepare. This team had their backs against the wall and made it out alive..That was a tough run.
Georgia probably wasted little time preparing for GT and has worked on the LSU game for a couple of weeks.
Also, that Swift even played against GT tells me that the rumors of a chronic shoulder problem are likely false.

I agree with you that Auburn had a better defense along the LOS, but I believe that LSU has far superior DB’s. We have seen time and time again that to successfully shut down our running game you load the box, play your NT over our C, and stuff the A gap. This will be on full display yet again this weekend, with the added twist of incredible DB’s playing man coverage vs a weak passing attack. Our O will stall far too often, resulting in our D playing far too many snaps. Even with our depth on D we will watch LSU score, score and score some more. LSU will do to us exactly what Kirby wants to do to opposing teams…impose their will. The only difference is that Kirby believes you can only break their will by running up the middle 57 times.

The other day I asked Skeptic if he was even going to watch the game. I understand the reasoning behind your comments Skeptic, but damn man, this is college football , not some financial analysis of a possible takeover candidate. Show some passion man. Fuck the stats, we’re going to kick some ass tomorrow! Go Dawgs!

As someone who’s familiar with financial analysis for corporate takeovers, if a potential buyer did analysis the way skeptic forecasted the Dawgs performances they would not be competitive in any auction process for any company worth a damn.

Also in a theoretical world where Georgia football was a stock and skeptic had to put his money where his mouth is via a short, he’d suddenly have much less conviction in his bearish sentiment. If skeptic truly believed what he was saying he’d have mortgaged his house and bet on LSU to cover the spread. I’m going to go out on a limb and guess he didn’t do that.

  18. I’d like to see us start Herrien followed by Zeus to take some early pounding off of Swift with that shoulder. Keep Swift healthy and rested as possible for the 2nd half. If he were to go out early with another injury, it might be a really big blow to the team mentally, not to mention physically.

While I would love for #7 to have a good game (100 yds) would love to see the real coming out parties for Zeus/Cook….only way for that to happen (and certainly opens up the passing game for Jake) is for the line to chew up some nails/watch some video of cousin eddie/sweater vest before the game…they have to be road graders like they have in the past…remember cleveland in this game back in 17….
