There’s a bond there.

Look who’s coming to Kirby’s clinic.

Remember, both guys coached at Valdosta State long ago.

  2. I hoping for offense by osmosis. But seriously, I love this. I love that Mike Leach is in the SEC. This upcoming season will be like the Christmas I was expecting my parents to get me an Atari, but instead they surprised me with this thing called a “Nintendo.”

    Also, I’m old.

Anybody else notice Mumme coaching in the XFL?

Has there ever been an SEC head coach show up at another SEC school for a coaching clinic? I’m not sure if I should feel bad for MSU or UGA.

Leach was Mumme’s OC for the Blazers in early to mid 1990’s. Could have won a few DII Natty’s back then with Chris Hatcher and Lance Funderburk if had any D and Bobby Wallace wasn’t at North Alabama. Favorite memory of Mumme and Leach was them literally sitting cross legged outside the locker room with a clipboard during halftime of quarterfinal at Carson Newman in an absolute monsoon. They were quite the characters then before they hit it big in DI.

He will. There are 4 guaranteed L’s in that schedule just about every year. Leach’s M.O. is that he’ll win one he shouldn’t and lose two he shouldn’t, so I have him going into the Egg Bowl at 5-6.

I saw this when UGA tweeted it yesterday and I have to admit I’m a little surprised we invited him. I know they have connections through Valdosta State and probably other links, too, but Leach is also coaching in the SEC now. It will likely be a while before Georgia and Mississippi State face off on the field again, but they’re obviously going to be trying to recruit in Georgia. Why should we put him in front of the very high school coaches that he needs to build relationships with in our state? We’ve just brought in an Air Raid guy to run the offense, do we really need to rub elbows with the guy that bad to help him build recruiting contacts in our state?

    • This isn’t the cold war. Leach is great for the SEC, and Kirby inviting him demonstrates first of all that Kirby is opening his mind to new offensive ideas, but also the quiet confidence that he has nothing to worry about from a ‘cruiting point of view. Saban does this stuff too. To me it says Kirby is finding his stride.

Unless he he invites Urban. In which case, obviously, we panic.

    • Good point, GD.

Maybe somebody needs to let the most anal coach in Georgia history know what he’s missing with this. Obviously he hasn’t considered the consequences.

That definitely seems a bit harsh. I just re-read my comment and I don’t see anything I said that would seem to be taken as snark or an insult against you, Senator, but if you took offense to what I wrote, I apologize. I posted what my reaction to the news and thoughts about it were, which didn’t feel out of line to me. Rabe76’s response before yours is certainly a good point and well stated appreciated by me and they’re probably right.

        • Didn’t think you were insulting me, so I wasn’t insulted. Just didn’t understand why you’d think Kirby wouldn’t have considered what you’re worried about before extending an invite, given his nature.

We spend plenty of time here discussing reactions to other decisions Kirby has made, and even engage in some pretty lengthy debate about them. Wasn’t expecting to be met with sarcasm about this one and thought someone may shed some light on why it’s a good idea, but I guess my mileage may vary.

That’s fair. My response would have been the same if we’d brought him back this year now that he’s at an SEC school and not Florida Atlantic. I was surprised to see us bring in someone else from the league, it doesn’t have anything to do with Mike Leach. Other than his politics, I enjoy Mike Leach and can’t wait to see the Egg Bowl shenanigans over the next few years. But just like you don’t usually see our staff visiting or hosting other SEC coaching staffs in the offseason as they do staff development and idea exchanges (instead huddling with programs like Oklahoma), I don’t remember us bringing in other SEC coaches for these functions. Just a thought, I was surprised. Carry on, all.

  9. Leach haters are missing the fact that he may just be the PERFECT fit at MSU. Just as the Laner’s prep-boy, condescending, uppity persona is perfect for Ole Miss, Leach’s quirky, off-kilter, conspiracy theorist, blue-collar vibe is perfect for Starkville.

Folks in Starkville will be happy with 7- and 8-win seasons if they include one upset win per year and tons of YouTube clips of Leach trolling sensitive SEC coaches.

No recruit is going to make a decision based on a coaches clinic appearance , and no 5 star is ever going to choose MSU over Ga. Kirby knows that so why worry?

I wondered if Kirby and Leach coached together at VSU but now I know they did not.
