Thought this was a fun comparison…
After watching those, I couldn’t help but wonder what Herschel could have done, operating out of the Wildcat. Can you imagine the Munson call on a Walker fake and TD pass?
Thought this was a fun comparison…
Herschel Walker played three years at Georgia. He finished 3rd, 2nd, and 1st in Heisman Trophy voting during those years. This is why.

“We remember the Sugar Bowl, I think it my junior year of high school, we let Alabama beat us twice,” Brinson said of a team that also lost to the Crimson Tide in the SEC Championship game. “We’re not letting Alabama beat us twice. In the Sugar Bowl in 2018, they… thought they should have been in the playoffs and lost to Texas.” -- AB-H, 12/27/23
Look up Bad MoFo in the dictionary or google and Herschel’s picture is next to it.

I don’t think I’d ever seen that first one before! But that one vs South Carolina…even though he was untouched and didn’t really have to juke anybody, it’s one of the greatest things I’ve ever seen in CFB. Can watch him run past those dbs all day.

McFadden had terrific acceleration, maybe better than Herschel, but not the top end speed. You don’t see guys closing in on Herschel like they do McFadden on that video.

Oh, I didn’t mean to imply that McFadden didn’t have wheels, just that they weren’t Herschel level wheels. I don’t recall Buck Bellew needing to throw a block 30 yards downfield to keep Herschel from getting run down.

I saw that run live. The only other human I have seen live with that kind of speed was Deion Sanders hitting a triple in AFC stadium.

I had similar thoughts. McFadden made some good throws, had terrific acceleration and a good stiff arm, but if a player actually caught Herschel or was in his way, that player ended up bouncing off of him and landing on their ass. A DB’s worse nightmare for sure.

But you have to give McFadden props for that arm! Has anyone ever had an RB that could throw like that?

No one before or after combined the speed and power of Herschel. Whether you needed 2 yards or 75, Herschel could be counted on to get it. The man made a 6 yard run look like a 2 yard run.
As Coach Dooley calls him, 34 was Ole Man River.
Gosh, I really hope the 1980 team gets a real 40 year anniversary reception in Sanford.

Weve screwed up quite a few anniversary moments.

You know, Gurley and Bo Jackson were pretty close though.

There is a difference between ability and getting it done.
There have been backs as physically gifted as Herschel. Maybe more so.
No college back with those gifts has ever been that well conditioned and that mentally tough.
You couldn’t give any other player that work load, where everyone knows who is getting the ball, and get those results.
That’s what makes Herschel special. It isn’t carry 1 that separates him. Its carry 38.
The only guy I’ve seen like that since was Derrick Henry and he didn’t have near the top end speed that 34 had.

That’s true, but as Derek says, no one took the ball as much as Herschel did when everyone in the stadium knew he was getting the ball.

Talk about your Manball? There it is ya’ll. It was a distinct privilege to watch him live.

D Mac used to kill LSU didn’t he? Also throws a little better than I remembered. It’s a shame injuries held him back in the NFL.

McFadden had a long td run or two in Sanford if I remember correctly. Toss sweep around right side.

That was the day DJ got injured and we barely made it out alive. 5 was scary.
Of course, that injury would cost us the next week.

He should have won the Heisman every year.

Wasn’t allowed to go to a freshman or sophomore back then. Utter rubbish. Going off of pure Internet discussion memory , as I was young then , but I think Herschel’s 2nd year was the best.

Allowed?
Because it didn’t happen doesn’t mean a freshman wasn’t “allowed” to win.
Herschel received 107 1st place votes as a freshman. The voters were allowed to vote that way and 34 was allowed to win.
Btw: Marcus Allen deserved it in 1981. George Rogers did not.
Marcus Allen in 1981: 433 Att, 2427 Yds, 5.6 Avg, 22 TD
Herschel Walker in 1981: 385 Att, 1891 Yds, 4.9 Avg, 18 TD

I think his first year. Not sure he ever fully recovered from that hit by Bob Crable in the Sugar Bowl. He was still the Greatest but that freshman season was magic. I was a young Alumnus and had season tickets, I was able to make the opener in Neyland and the Sugar Bowl.I feel fortunate to have seen it all.

To be fair, Marcus Allen had a monster year in ’81 (2.342 yds.), so it’s hard to begrudge him the Heisman. George Rodgers in ’80 was a joke, though, even with the bias against freshmen.
Too bad Herschel in the wildcat is only something we can dream about. In ’82 with Lastinger as QB, the wildcat could have been our base offense.

Yes, he was good in the Cotton Bowl, and that’s what we remember. In ‘82, though, he completed 42% of his passes and threw more interceptions (9) than TDs (8) – in an offense with Herschel. He was so inconsistent that it was hard to watch sometimes.

Didn’t realize McFaddon was that fast ,but still no match for Hershel.

Two fastest human beings I’ve seen live in Sanford stadium was Darren McFadden on that run to the right against us
AND
Brandon Smith reverse against SC to the left.
yes, too young to have seen Herschel.

I never saw Herschel break a long one in person … just a bunch of 15-30 yard runs.
I remember the run Bo had in ’85 in Sanford. It was jaw dropping. I saw McFadden’s run in person as well, but I still think Bo’s was better.

I love that clip of Herschel absolutely flattening Sal Sunseri from Pitt. Sunseri was quoted before the Sugar Bowl saying he dreamed of Walker getting the ball, a hole opens up and he (Sunseri) steps into the hole to bury Walker. His dream quickly became a nightmare on national TV (and YouTube). Screw Dan Marino.

Many a defensive back made business decisions when Herschel was coming at them to dive at his legs or give him the “Ole” arm tackle try. Once he had a full head of steam, safeties who were going to future lawyers, bankers or salesmen had no desire to take him on.
