Shot.
On a personal level, do you feel anything emotional about the fact a rivalry game is being sacrificed?
McGarity: “Sure. That game means so much to everyone and it’s just unfortunate that it was affected. But there is so much change going on in today’s word and we need to be ready to expect the unexpected. It just happened it was not able to be worked out. It’s unfortunate, but we look forward to resuming the rivalry in 2021 and we’ll just go from there.”
Any chance of going rogue and still play Georgia Tech just to keep the rivalry going?
McGarity: “There’s a mandate that we play 10 games. You have two open weeks. You’ve got one in the middle of the season that everybody has an open date on the 12th. I don’t think Kirby would be too excited to play 10 SEC games and then play Tech the week before hopefully, if we do well this year, to be in Atlanta. It’s unfortunate. It’s just the way everything fell. We’ll move forward and renew the rivalry next year.”
How hard is it to wrap your head around the Georgia Tech game not happening?
McGarity: “It’ll probably sink in here the next couple days. It’s unfortunate. And you’re seeing it really around college athletes this year. There’s so many abnormal situatios that are in play that will certainly create a lot of disappointment and unfortunate. It’ll just have to be an open year. I’d have to look back on other rivalries and see if there were times when certain rivalries didn’t paly. The pandemic has just created so many oddities that a lot of things are almost out of your control. It’s just one of the things that are unfortunate when you’re in a situation like that. It’s just unfortunate.”
Chaser.
Yeah, he’s really choked up about it.
So Tech will now say UGA is afraid of them.

Stupid that we can’t play Tech. McGarity is scared of going up against the NCAA or the SEC – just look at past “infractions” where UGA essentially said please, may I have another. And playing in state makes so much more sense than playing five states away.
More concerning is this seclusion in-conference means there’s no chance in hell that two teams from a conference will get into the playoffs, assuming we get there. Polls will be worthless, so that national pundits will start talking loud and long about how you can’t compare teams, etc, how we HAVE to take conference champions.
Georgia better have its A game ready or we’ll be missing out again.

I’ll be the first to admit McGarity’s shortcomings, but I’m not sure what people expected him to do. There’s 10 schools that don’t have any desire to play an out of conference game this year, and only 4 that do (UGA, UF, SC, KY). The numbers are what they are. Yeah, McGarity could have cast a protest vote, but things would still be exactly the same as they are.
The fact is that Sankey got outmaneuvered by Swofford on this one. Swofford knew most of the SEC didn’t have an appetite for an out of conference game, so by announcing first, with a model that allowed those games to be played, he pushed all the negative publicity onto the SEC for the games not being played.

At least we could stand on principle rather than going along to get along. If this were an isolated occurrence, people would have given him the benefit of the doubt. The fact this is another case of caving to the scheduling demands of others is what has everyone frustrated with him.

Yeah believe me, I get it, like I said I’ll be the first to point out his weaknesses, and there are plenty to point out. I’m just saying that he could have gotten mad and stomped his feet all he wanted, and we’d still have the same situation we’ve got now. I’m just not as keen on criticizing someone in situations they have no control over. I understand the context of prior situations when he could/should have fought harder, but no fighting was gonna change this situation.
Now, if we get hosed in the scheduling end, I’ll be ready to light the pitchforks too. That is one I expect him to fight tooth and nail for us.

What’s Einstein’s definition of insanity, Reverend?
You “expect” McGarity to fight tooth and nail for us?
I expect you will be disappointed, and I expect to be right about expecting you to be disappointed.
Which one of us is sane in this situation?

I didn’t expect him to stomp his feet and walk out of the room, but I would have liked to have seen a protest vote on principle.

That assumes that piece of shit has principles.
I have yet to find evidence over the course of his terrible decade-plus as our AD that he has any principle other than the principle of removing money from our wallets. Fuck THAT Motherfucker.

I’m not surprised about McGarity. I’m disappointed in President Morehead. The vote should have been 10-4 or 11-3 (Kentucky changing the vote).
Go along to get along … it’s the Georgia Way.
Does anyone think this would have been different if Bama and Auburn had a rivalry game at stake? I didn’t think so.

For everyone who isn’t worked up about this, just wait until the next round of talks on scheduling comes up. The 10 schools who don’t really have a vested interest in maintaining the permanent crossover opponent (Florida and LSU really don’t care about playing each other every year) are going to override those that do. Say good-bye to the South’s Oldest Rivalry and the 3rd Saturday in October as annual games.

I’ve been saying this forever. It’s coming. It may be 10 years from now but it’s coming. Disney ESPN and the general public don’t care about college football traditions. They just need their betting lines.

Interesting how some ADs say they fight for things:
“Clemson athletic director Dan Radakovich said his school “aggressively lobbied the ACC to include an additional non-conference game for the primary purpose of maintaining our long-standing rivalry game with South Carolina.”
And then you have this:
“the Georgia AD said. “A lot of things are almost out of your control.”
Damn, just stand up for Georgia, even if you lose. Fight for our kids and our team.

I think the ACC shot itself in the foot by mandating that the one OOC game has to be played in the ACC team’s state. The four SEC/ACC rivalry games wouldn’t have been affected, but anybody else wanting to schedule a game with the ACC would have to agree to travel. I’ve read where this pissed off some SEC officials, who may have been willing to schedule games with them if the locations were more evenly divided. It’s really too bad the SEC, ACC, and Big12 couldn’t work together to get each of their members one OOC game against a power five team.

There’s an argument to be made here that we’d still be playing Tech this year if they weren’t a bunch of cowards who fled the SEC in the 60’s or whenever it was.

If it was someone other than McGarity, I might give them the benefit of the doubt. Just because he voted for it doesn’t mean he liked it. He could’ve said “I voted for the least bad option out of a bunch of bad options” or something to that effect. It’s a lot easier to believe that he just didn’t put up any kind of a fight.
As someone else mentioned above, a 10-4 vote would’ve made more sense. Same outcome, but with those schools having in-state out-of-conference rivals casting their votes accordingly.

The McGarity blasting is a bit unfair in my opinion since 1.) Presidents made this decision and not ADs (I get that they were consulted) and 2.) The choice was to fight the late start of the season and have Georgia Tech or take this plan. The ACC doesn’t even know what day they are having the championship for crying out loud!

If you think the presidents made this decision, you must be related to or really good friends with Greg McGarity. The presidents likely discussed one solution … the one recommended by Sankey and the ADs.

So your position is that SEC presidents just do whatever their AD tells them to on one of the biggest issues they’ve ever faced without input or deliberation?

My point is that Sankey and the ADs presented the solution they agreed to earlier in the week. The presidents probably asked questions and discussed, but if you think they made the decision and considered other alternatives yesterday, you’re kidding yourself.

And who wants to put odds on Florida getting their bye week before our game, and us playing Auburn/Bama/LSU or similar that week?
That would be a McGarrity hat trick.
– Not putting up a fight for the tech game.
– bending over to receive the toughest pull from the west.
– letting Florida get the bye while we don’t.

Why not play Tech like a Spring practice game, just before the season start? Limited play clock, limited tackling, no fans in stadium, doesn’t count in record or standings. Maybe even let the players make a little cash from the TV rights.
Call it an experiment if the NCAA wants to object. Different rules for different times.
