The SEC puts limits on preseason practice.
The conference office has approved a new preseason plan that delays practice deeper into August. As part of the plan, teams can practice 25 times over a 40-day period beginning on Aug. 17, sources tell Sports Illustrated. During that time, schools must adhere to the NCAA’s normal in-season football access time of 20 countable hours a week. Two days off each week are required. The new preseason plan expands the SEC’s practice window by 11 days, providing flexibility for more off days and potential COVID-19 related interruptions.
I guess we’ll have to wait for the pundit class and the Gator message boards to weigh in on whether that’s sufficient for Georgia’s offense to get its shit together.

Senator, where do you think Kirby came down on this? 11 extra days seems good, but it’s still not the same as missing 15 days of Spring Practice with the 3 scrimmages.
Do you think McGarity even tried to fight for “fall scrimmages” or 15 days as opposed to 11?

This feels like something purely COVID-driven, with the decision coming from the SEC office without asking for feedback from anyone but their medical experts. I don’t think the ADs had any input.

Okay then… yeah… leadership by consensus. Again, that’s largely been Sankey’s style.
I think the SEC misses a stronger hand like Slive would yield, if I’m honest. Not that it matters from Georgia’s point of view though. McGarity’s going to bend over regardless of the Commissioner’s leadership style.

That’s interesting, because it largely hasn’t seemed to be Sankey’s style. That model of top-down decision making that was more a hallmark of Mike Slive’s time as Commissioner. Sankey has seemed to more more a leader by consensus, more like Kramer.
I wonder if he’ll keep a tighter grip on the reins moving forward, where he tells more than he asks.

This might be an advantage for our QBs as they will have ample time to practice and time to let the new offense “soak” in. I also think it will help with injuries as it gives enough of a break for guys to rest and rehab a little.

This is where having a guy like Newman is paramount. He’s more invested than most other types of transfers because he knows if he knows Monken’s offense cold, his ability to be a top-5 draft pick and make much more slotted money in his first contract is far more assured.
If he slacks off during these off days and isn’t putting in the work on his own, he maybe won’t even be drafted in the first round at all.
It’s not enough to have a graduate transfer QB, but to have a graduate transfer QB who is hungry to prove themselves combined with the raw talent to actually be able to prove themselves, will make all the difference in the world.
It’s why Newman was preferable to Costello. I admit, I was wrong about Costello in that I originally preferred him, but Kirby knew what he was doing.

My ass. They pushed the season start back to delay the shit show that’s coming when they tell us no tickets / limited tickets. They’re praying something else comes along to take it out of their hands. Extra safety and flexibility is a ruse. Fewer practices is posturing.

I don’t imagine the fundraisers are going to be very happy when they start getting the calls from someone who contributes to athletics & academics but doesn’t get tickets because the person doesn’t contribute enough to athletics. I get the reason why that will be the case, but it won’t make that development & alumni relations person’s job any easier.
I’ve already prepared myself for that email, so I’ll be disappointed but not surprised.

I figure what, if you’re below 100,000 Hartman Points, don’t even bother getting hopeful?
The one thing I want to see is for them to let ALL students into the stadium who want to go.
I’ve said for years that we have one of the worst home field advantages in the SEC because our greedy Athletic Association does has one of the smallest per capita student sections.
I bet, if they let 30,000 students into the stadium, we’d have a GREAT home field advantage this season. They’d sound like 90,000.

You could absolutely put the students on the south side and the non-students on the north side and get a pretty good home field with that. Of course, most of those that would be sitting on the north side would be the real wine & cheese, down-in-front crowd.

I’m ok with any plan that “trues up” the amount of my donation (which was based on lower level between the 30s) with my seat location. Same with the tickets. UGAA has had our money since February (and I’d guess most schools are the same). The SEC schools are making interest on a nine figure pile of money and any second they can delay either giving it back or pissing off the bulk of their donor base is huge.
