Can’t we just all opt now so we don’t have to lose games because we don’t have a qb?

Draft. Can’t blame him, really. He got all the hype and media attention he could hope for, little more reward left and lots of risk being on campus in the time of Covid. Wonder how much UGA reporting all those new infections factored into it.

    2) Forget about Fields. There’s no way he gets clearance from the NCAA that quickly, and the B1G is trying to figure out a way to play football this fall.
    3) Hello, manball, unless JT Daniels gets cleared for contact (no matter what Todd Monken wants).
    4) If Daniels doesn’t get full clearance, our QB choices are a redshirt freshman who had a cyst removed from his brain, an undersized, former walk-on/JUCO transfer, and a true freshman who is likely the odd man out when Vandagriff steps on campus.

2020, you can go straight to hell for all I care.

      • Assuming Daniels isn’t cleared for contact, there’s NO way Kirby gives Monken the latitude and the patience to implement his offensive philosophy this year with Mathis or Beck at the controls. He’s going to try to win with defense, field position, and clock management.

Kirby’s first offensive instinct to do no harm is probably kicking in really hard right now.

Even if Daniels is cleared, how willing is Kirby going to be to allow him to keep the ball in the read option?

        • Corch Irvin Meyers, New USC Corch (2021)

Who says there was going to be a lot of read option, anyway? I’ve been seeing this since the announcement and am baffled. Monken’s background doesn’t have much of any read option in it. He’s run the Air Raid. He’s run the pro-style spread. He’s never run the read option, which is a very specific kind of offense.

Even if there were some zone read runs in the playbook, who’s to say they’d be called as much as Coley called them last year, as opposed to regular play action?

          Like

          • What I mean is zone read. There aren’t a whole lot of running plays you can call from the shotgun. Would Daniels be given any latitude given QB depth to keep on the read similar to Fromm last year?

            • Corch Irvin Meyers, New USC Corch (2021)

I think it’s more RPO, with the run being only for the RB, with Newman taking off to run if the play breaks down or everyone’s covered.

I honestly never believed there would be a lot of designed running opportunities, which would be the zone option plays Coley called all the time.

              Like

              • I hope you’re right. I have thought we’ll see more RPO stuff rather than what we saw last year. If that’s the case, I still hope Daniels has gotten full clearance.

Daniels learned a fairly pure version of the Air Raid for USC last season. While Monken won’t be running the Air Raid here, some of the same principles and concepts will be used in his pro-style spread offense, or whatever you want to call it.

I honestly think it might be time to go back and look at plays from 2015 Southern Miss and 2018 Tampa Bay. I think our offense will look closer to those two teams than anything else.

Newman committed a week before Monken was hired and Daniels comitted after Monken was in Athens. Something to think about.

I am expecting a creative short passing game something Daniels did but UGA has a bigger run threat. It could be a great mix to spread the field with the passing game and run with UGA’s RBs and 5 lineman. We shall see. UGA has the depth at QB even after Newman’s departure for the option of the QB run, and an OC should be open to the option of making the D think about more things but I don’t expect UGA to be like Ohio St, Auburn, or Urban’s FU teams.

If Newman, who was not the same system fit as Daniels was, might have been beaten out (you would always choose the guy w/ 3 years left vs 1 year if anywhere close to the same talent), he would have been very smart to go pro now.

But if you were coming to UGA to get tested by the defense in practice and gain exposure, you were still getting that and, since other leagues have cancelled, the exposure was going to be through the roof with the #3 team.

I agree. Everything I’ve heard from people in Athens is that he comes across as a very smart guy. With the exposure and talent around him this season he had a legit chance of being a 1st round pick and the money that comes with that pick. Right now I’d guess he is a late round guy who will have to prove himself. Still could get to that big contract, but it won’t be easy because the starter would have to get hurt and then he would have to shine in those few games.

Anyway, I wish him the best.

I sincerely hope that Newman is simply taking advantage of the opt out option to cover up Daniels beating him in practice. But I’m skeptical. It would be so 2020 for a healthy young athlete to skip the season because he’s afraid of dying from a disease with a survivability rate that must not be cited.

      Liked by 3 people

      • I don’t think it has anything to do with any fear for his own health. I think it has to do with the specter of the season likely being truncated (further) or cancelled before it even gets started. And the idea of headaches related to quarantines, having to play with way more 2nd, 3rd and 4th-stringers in any given week than you are accustomed to. All for what? To MAYBE get a chance to play for an SEC championship and probably a 10% chance of there even being a CFP…. and if there is it will look totally bogus because several top flight teams aren’t playing or are quarantined or are missing their best players?

        Pfffft. Forget that.

I don’t know if he’s a better fit for the downfield passes Monken prefers in his offense. In a pure Air Raid, with a ton of short passes, slants and crossing routes, etc. yeah, Daniels is a great fit.

But Monken’s current offense is much more play action and downfield throwing than the Air Raid he ran in OSU or the purer form of Air Raid that Daniels learned in USC.

Daniels one knock is arm strength, so I dunno.

It stings and I was very excited for him but I can’t fault anyone’s decision in this wacky screwed up year. I think if he would have gotten 3 or 4 games and shown some skills that would have really helped him. I’m also not his agent. This actually helps our quarterback Room in a year that is probably not gonna be finished or is going to be screwed up or is going to have a giant huge astrik anyway.

And it’s looking to me like Kirby was on it as usual. Because the JT transfer didn’t quite make sense to me.

I don’t think it’s necessarily about “making sense.” If you think about it, Richt’s way of staggering QB recruits to not “overstuff” the QB room and give players room to grow and learn “makes sense.”

Kirby’s way is to just stack talent on top of talent on top of talent, and let the chips fall where they may.

The one thing about this that sucks, as I’ve seen others say on twitter, is that we wasted a schollie on Newman that could’ve gone to get Grimes reclassified and into Athens.

That’s what I was getting at. Just because it “makes sense” on paper, doesn’t mean it actually makes sense in practice. On paper, Richt and Bobo’s way of handling QB talent makes sense, but in the context of reality and all of the variables that can’t be controlled, Kirby’s way of just recruiting every talented player you can at every position and stacking talent at every position is the far better way of doing things, even if it means the “embarrassment” of seeing some players transfer because they’re passed up by younger players or can’t unseat older players.

    Fields transferring back wouldn’t help.

He doesn’t know the super-complex offense and can’t read a defense. All he’s ever done is have the coaches call plays for him in the overly simple OSU offense.

At best, he would need to sit behind the seasoned Bennet, who has a better understanding of the playbook.

This offense isn’t nearly as complex as the Chaney/Coley offense, by design.

However, he would have more responsibilities pre-snap and post-snap than he does in Ryan Day’s offense, including reading the defense to set the protection and call the audible, so yeah, there would be a steep learning curve.

He wasn’t number one in the nation for nothing and ohio state has an absolutely outstanding offensive coordinator. This idea that fields can’t read a defense is bunk and the idea that it would be so so difficult for him to learn more is also bunk. Hes a great quarterback.

One thing I like about college football is the loyalty of the fans to their team, so an almost blind allegiance to the lynchpins of a program against criticism is not unexpected.

Perhaps it’s just too soon to bring up the reality that Justin Fields and really, in all actuality, Jacob Eason were clearly superior talents to Jake Fromm.

        But they both are/were.

That doesn’t make Jake a bad quarterback, he just didn’t have the abilities the other guys do.

I think a lot of people think Kirby’s decision to continue to start Jake in his freshman year was somehow analogous with Belichick starting Brady over Bledsoe and riding it to great success. But it just wasn’t.

Brady was a superior talent to Bledsoe. Brady was a the better player.

Jake Fromm is just not a better player than Justin Fields or Jacob Eason. That’s a reality. He wasn’t a better leader. Nick Chubb, Sony Michel and Roquan, those guys were the leaders. Jake Fromm was, for the most part, a limited liability that we praised Cheney for hiding and nurturing during the NC run that came up short.

The narrative is now, to protect the reputation of Kirby and his decision, that Jake Fromm “led” us to the title game. But anyone that can actually review that season with any semblance of objectivity recognizes that Jake was hidden in the game plan. We thought it was magical at the time, but the magic eventually met reality in the second half of the NC.

His legacy gets more credit than is actually due in terms of ethereal transcendency. If we are totally honest, he’s Bill Wyman.

Anyone claiming Tom Brady was a superior athletic talent to Drew Bledsoe don’t know what the eff they’re talking about, and it’s quite obvious they’re talking out of their ass.

Few QBs have ever come into the NFL with more talent than Drew Bledsoe.

Where Tom Brady beats Bledsoe is in all the intangibles. The drive. The competitiveness. The want-to. The willingness to eat, sleep, and shit football 24/7. The ability to be a coach on the field, to know where the football needs to go almost every time.

In ever other aspect, from Arm to height to strength, all the measurable? Bledsoe is far superior. That’s why he was a No. 1 pick and Brady a 6th round pick.

Damn dude, I know you’re butthurt about Fields (and I guess Eason), but you’re full of crap.
