Barrett Sallee says D’Wan Mathis grabbed the starting quarterback job a couple of weeks ago, and not by default. In fact…
… he believes Mathis is the reason Jamie Newman left. Interesting. Love to know where he got that from.

“We remember the Sugar Bowl, I think it my junior year of high school, we let Alabama beat us twice,” Brinson said of a team that also lost to the Crimson Tide in the SEC Championship game. “We’re not letting Alabama beat us twice. In the Sugar Bowl in 2018, they… thought they should have been in the playoffs and lost to Texas.” -- AB-H, 12/27/23
I heard the same thing right after Newman opted out. Not from anyone that knows anything just watercooler talk.

Next door neighbor heard it from the sanitation guy whose third cousin goes to school at northwest divisional who was taking driving lessons from a piano playing woman that was walking right by Sanford Stadium who saw Newman catching a cab to the airport….

I heard it from Simone. I’ve heard she’s pretty reliable.

Encouraging if true.
Just for shits and giggles, if Newman was on everybody’s Heisman short list, then . . . nah.

Could be wrong, but wasn’t his rationale for the Gators winning the East was because Newnan left?

I’ve lost count of the hacks that are picking UF to win the East. But I’m not sure if he was one of them…

Yes, I believe he is.

Ah alright then. Then he is on my “list” now!

Who kniws where Sallee got his info, but he’s been saying it consistently on SIRIUSXM 84 Radio for weeks. Right or not, he’s very certain. If he’s correct, that would seem to bode well for us (and Sallee is also picking the Handbags this year)

While there’s certainly the possibility that Newman really does have concerns about COVID-19 if he plays football this year (and I guess there’s really no way to prove that he doesn’t) … this is really the only explanation for his opt-out that really makes any sense at all. He has been told that he’s got draft stock and draft position. He correctly sees that losing his job to a younger player isn’t going to have any kind of positive impact on that stock and position. He opts out to protect his future. He knew about covid a lot earlier than his opt out, that’s for sure.

He can get 40 hours a week + training now.

I heard rumors similar to this as well allegedly coming from Mike Cavan to a friend of a friend. But who knows?
Newman left because he was getting beat out due to him supposedly struggling with making the correct reads. That’s why I wondered in a another thread recently here whether Mathis really won the job based upon performance or it was because Daniels hadn’t been cleared to play yet.

Al signs point to Mathis being the default choice, but perhaps Sallee knows something that Dean Legge and Conor Riley haven’t been able to glean from their underground BM sources.

Say Mathis did beat out Newman and Newman was only brought in by Kirby as insurance until he felt confident about D’wan. Talk about 4D roster management chess.

Well that’s a lot more comforting than newman woukd have been the starter but left for whatever reason, Daniels isn’t physically ready (this is almost certainly true or else he’d be cleared even if he wasn’t the starter) so a guy who almost died and we didn’t know if he’d ever play another down is named starter by default. Let’s hope sallee’s version is closer to the truth.
