JT’s greatest hits

For only four games, there sure is a lot to look back on.

The best thing about that video is that, except for McKitty and (maybe) Robertson, everybody throwing and catching in it will be back for 2021.

The first TD pass against Mississippi State was a harbinger. Tight window, thrown low, only our guy or nobody could catch it.

Ohio State had a lot of look back on 6 games.

A little too much Dave #1 this early in the morning, can only imagine how much more there would’ve been if we had played Vandy (but JT looked good!)…

Rusty Mansell at 247Sports indicated that Robertson was returning for 2021. He’s pretty much in-the-know, FWIW.

Glad to hear. Robertson hasn’t been the breakout talent we may have hoped, but he was sure handed this year for sure. Glad if he’s back.

      • Kirby turned him into a blocking back. He has talent if we use him.

Amen, Chuck. I said that for years. He set records at Cal, yet at Georgia he didn’t even see the field (except for his 75 yard jet sweep TD in the first game of the season) his first season. Meanwhile, we were hurting for competent receivers. To me, that was Kirby’s worst attribute, but thankfully I think he’s seen the light. Our receiver’s room is packed with talent and we finally have a QB to get them the ball.

    • That’s great news. It would be good to see him more in some 10 and empty sets. He has excellent speed and good hands. He should be a matchup nightmare in the slot.

The JT to the big o combination is gonna be lethal this year. How would you like to try to tackle that guy with a full head of steam? Not me!

I’m not sure about this. Was JT considered a mobile QB before the injury? If so, just think of him at 100% and some decent wheels. Talk about a nightmare for defenses!

    • He’s definitely not a “dual threat,” but I think he will be more mobile in the pocket than he was in the limited action we saw. We don’t need a QB who can run by design (meaning QB power). We need one who can run just enough to keep teams honest on the zone read and can pick up some yards and maybe a first down when protection breaks down.

We have so many weapons. Just need him to be nimble in the pocket. Avoid the rush, keep eyes downfield, find space to pass, get accurate passes off while getting hit, and kill them with big plays when they dare blitz. That’s the mobility we need (like burrow, big ben, Russell wilson, rodgers, watson, etc.) I was impressed with JT’s ability to do that. His internal clock will get better w practice so he can avoid plays like that fumble in the peach bowl.

      • Don’t need it so sniffled that the QB doesnt run on obvious times to run – Fromm killed me too many times with 20 yards of green in front of him.

        • I know there was a concern not to get Fromm injured (especially in 2019), but you have to have some threat of the QB keeper on the zone read to keep that backside end from crashing down on the tailback. Otherwise, that play is generally useless unless it’s blocked perfectly. Just keep a few times per game and get 4-7 yards and get on the ground.

        • Something else I hope to see in 2021 is more pistol rather than shotgun. Bama does a ton of their running between the tackles out of the pistol. They typically attack the edge out of a traditional shotgun look.

          • I am a massive pistol fan. Dont know how much Monken is. We also need to get PA to be a thing again perhaps, I like mixing run/pass/pa out of the pistol very much. Same looks, different stuff.

            • We ran a ton of pistol looks in 2012-14. I think it’s the perfect formation with 11 personnel. It gives the running back a chance to get a head of steam on the inside power run like an I tailback. Running play action or RPO off it is easier. If you check to a straight drop back pass, an edge run or zone read, it’s an easy adjustment to move the back in the formation.

Chicks dig the long ball! And that was dead sexy.

Looking forward to our offense next season. We have several receiving threats and I think that will also open things up for the backs. Just imagine if we add Arik Gilbert!

  9. I see our Smith in Pickens. Waddle = Burton/Jackson. Our Pitts is Washington. With a clean pocket, JT is every bit as good as Jones. No Harris, but a multi headed crew at RB who can do the job and take over games late.

Is Monken as good as Sark? Is Kirby really able to install The Process? I would really like to see us crush teams, not squeak by the best of the AAC. I’m not begging for a dynasty, just one season where the accumulation of this much talent is put on full display every game, every quarter, every down. Win them all by 30. Enjoy the Heisman talk. Snicker at the dawggrading in the media. And finally, embrace the rapture of one of Saban’s assistants finally conquering the master, Kirby hosting the trophy while the confetti drops.

    If not 2021, when?

    • I think Monken showed he was doing more in a different sense. He created plays that worked for a lot of players. Sark made magic out of a couple. Theyre both awesome.

Monken JT just got to work on the blitz reads and go to’s/audibles. And our RBs hearing that and knowing what to do, and its all gravy.

I’m just hoping he gets a little coaching on his throwing motion. He seems to have always had that weird ‘fly away leg’ and it might be worse since the injury due to lack of trust. Or maybe I’m way off base, I dunno. Either way, underthrowing most of his long balls isn’t the best. But those intermediate throws though. Holy moly. I’m truly excited to see what a full spring practice and full camp and the #1 can do.
