Really, this is close to perfect.
With the federal government about to write $1.9 trillion worth of checks — some of which will even reach the pockets of the poor souls who need them most after nearly a year of financial suffering due to the coronavirus pandemic — perhaps discovering that the University of Tennessee football program is going to pay one Kevin Steele close to $900,000 NOT TO WORK isn’t that big a deal.
So even if I can’t wait to read Steele’s upcoming book “How to Become an (Almost) Millionaire in Seven Short Weeks While Doing Nothing,” I suppose we’re all supposed to just shrug this off as the cost of doing business when you’ve been as bad at business as UT football has the past decade or so.
But really?
$900,000 for seven weeks of NOTHING?
The only thing missing is a crack about that cryptic comment from UT’s head honcho about the SEC providing financial help. But I’m just quibbling.
[Ed. note: The first person who takes this post as an invitation to opine about the bill (you know the bill I’m talking about) will be unceremoniously placed in time out. So don’t do it.]
Kevin Steele by all accounts orchestrated a coup, and when it failed, was able to essentially shakedown another program for a $900k no-show job.
What a sport.

Big urnge cuntry business plan is to pay an individual to do nothing vs paying someone real time money who friggin’ dumpster fired the program (either pruitt or fulmer or both)…

So what does this say about the value of a UT business degree?

Why are the residents of Tennessee even putting up with this? It should be a massive firing of all the top people and start from scratch. I commented a few months ago that if I was a freshman or sophomore at UT and not that far into degree requirements I would get the hell out of Dodge as fast as I could. Hey, Paawwwwl, is your UT diploma still hanging on the wall?

Steele got paid twice in a year to not coach at a school? Do I have that right? Walking papers at Auburn with a nice buy-out, then an additional $900k “whoops, never mind” gig at UT?
If Steele doesn’t become the poster child for P5 schools paying players, that group isn’t doing it right.
How much money are P5 schools combined paying guys to NOT coach their team right now? Has to be 9 figures? UT, Auburn, and SC-C alone are what, around $50 mill (depending how Pruitt’s litigation goes)?
How do I get into that good ol’ boy network?

What would ceremoniously being placed in time-out look like?
But seriously, I know the opinion of Greg McGarity on this forum is homogeneously bad. But for all his admittedly glaring flaws, at least Georgia doesn’t find itself in these kind of inexplicably bad financial decisions. And that goes back to his successors.

No Greg accepted on the field/court/diamond mediocrity to fill his precious reserve fund.

I agree with what you have said here, with the exception that most of Richt’s seasons were above mediocre, and every two or three years he’d have a team with a legitimate shot. See, e.g., 2002, 2005, 2007, 2012 and 2013. He was just snake-bit.

Well, if you think about it, Tennessee has been paying all of their coaches a lot of money to do nothing for a couple of decades now.
