Okay, the header is kind of a joke, sure, but I always love it when a mindless narrative takes a shot, like “Kirby Smart can’t develop talent”.
That certainly explains why Eric Stokes was drafted in the first round last night. As well as this:
Yeah, ol’ Kirbs is just stealing money.
I like that many of our Dawgs are being undervalued in the draft…given some of the busts that came out of last year, which are none of Kirby’s fault, having a class that will get drafted and shine in the pros will do future recruiting well.
On another note, I think you could make the argument that Lawrence is no better than when he entered Clemson, same with Fields. So do Day and Swinney not develop talent, either? Those two were first rounders from the word go.
On yet another note, what does it say about Mullen to have two first rounders on offense getting drafted this year and no SEC championship or playoff appearance to show for it? Last time that happened for Kirby (2018 – Wynn and Michel) we were 2nd and 26 from a National Championship.

We had 2 1st-rounders last year (Thomas and Wilson) without a lot to show for it.

Thomas is going to be fine.

I think he meant no SEC championship to show for it.

It’ll be odd cheering for Kyle Pitts.

Yup my brother in law texted me last night asking me if I would be ok cheering for a Gator. I told him I was cheering for another weapon we added for Matt. Seems like a good kid and I am happy with the pick.

He’ll look a hell of a lot better in red and black than he did in orange and blue.

I saw Coach rocker at the Race Trac at 78 and Mars Hill road. I told him he looks better in Red and Black than in that damn orange and blue. He laughed, I was glad. That is one large individual.

3-Star Eric Stokes who was pretty much a last minute take by Kirby becomes a 1st round pick. He can’t develop talent. Yeah, right.
I’ll admit I was surprised Azeez didn’t go last night. If he doesn’t get selected early tonight, he may have made a mistake by coming out.
What amazed me last night is the number of players selected who completely opted out of their seasons. If I were a GM, I would have been much more hesitant about picking one of those guys.

I love that Ojulari wasn’t picked.
Now the Falcons are primed to take him to help fix their shitty pass rush.
It would take the sting out of taking a fucking ‘turd even if he was the best player in the draft.

You forgot about their team rule against drafting Dawgs.

Tweedle Dumb and Tweedle Dumber are gone.
We’ll see how they do now.
The Falcons also have a huge hole to fill at LG a certain Big Ben Cleveland could fill quite nicely with a 3rd round pick.

I think there is something to the fact that despite having the top class in 2018, UGA had one player drafted last night vs Bama’s SIX
You can debate all kinds of factors in that, but it’s a concerning fact.

One factor is that most of Alabama’s picks were signed in 2017.

6 to 1 whenever the players were recruited is telling.

I count maybe three first rounders next year then (Daniels, Pickens, Davis), one of which we didn’t initally recruit.

Except that Harris, Smith, Jones, and Leatherwood were all in the 2017 class and were 4th year seniors, you have a point. They had 2 underclassmen selected and we had 1.

Yes it is concerning and highlights a trend of alabama having more guys drafted and drafted higher than do we. Just as far as first rounders go alabama had 6, 4, 3 and 4 from 2021 to 2018 drafts respectively whereas we had 1, 2, 1 and 3. By and large that’s a reflection of alabama’s players having more productive careers in college (I’d imagine the data is very similar if you compare based on college level production such as # of all americans and all sec guys) than do ours which is exactly why we’re having a hard time beating them on the field: we are taking elite recruits and developing them into good players, bama is taking elite recruits and turning them into elite players.

Nailed it. Kirby has been recruiting at or very near Saban’s level since 2017. The ’21 Dawgs have slightly less talent than Bama (2.0 to 2.2; https://athlonsports.com/college-football/ranking-college-footballs-rosters-2021). The third-place team, anOSU, is at 5. Kirby’s elite recruits have got to start playing elite football. This is year 6. Not saying Kirby should be fired if the Dawgs don’t win a natty, then ten more, but beating Bama once should be doable. Just do it.

Surtain was the number 1 cb in hs so its hard to argue he was “developed.” They didn’t fuck him up. (Tyson was second and he’ll be gone soon.)
Same with Harris. Same with Leatherwood. Both #1 guys at the position.
If you’re the best guy at your position nationally in hs you should be a first round guy.
Stokes was the 63rd cb nationally.

When Jordan Davis is taken in the first round next year, how many 3-stars will Kirby Smart have turned into first round picks? Three?
But the Floriduh fans keep telling us he can’t develop talent.
FUCK THOSE MOTHERFUCKERS!

Davis wasn’t ranked in the top 10 among DL in this draft. I’m not sure he’s going to be a first rounder ever (NT isn’t a high value position).

He’s not a NT, he’s a DT. He’ll play NT in 3-4 alignment, but the Dawgs don’t play majority 3-4 anymore. They’re a base Nickel Defense now and have been for years.

Davis just hasn’t been a consistent presence like Cody was which is why he came back. This is his contract year. My hope is that he takes it to heart and has a monster season knowing what it could do for his draft stock.

Davis is a more effective pass rusher than Cody ever was.

Turning three stars into first rounders is cool, but I’m still waiting on the last frontier of 5 stars coming in with, and maintaining first round status throughout their careers.

Jordan Davis is a 3 down defensive tackle that happens to also be an interior space eater. When he’s healthy, he’s a load to move out of there.
